Progressives are wrong about the essence of the Constitution

Fools like Bush, Cheney, Boehner, Trump, Palin, ..I could go on but I like our president, support him and believe he's on the right track, so ....name calling is a bit different from referencing wikipedia, progressives supported education and social equality on many levels. To some these may be foolish but I benefited from an Andrew Carnegie library outside a town of 3000 residents in the midwest in the 1950s. I'm glad juveniles are not tried as adults and the industrial age of Teddy Roosevelt has ended with the dawn of the technological age of Bill Clinton. Times have changed but needs have not.Socialized medical care in Taiwan saved my life and after 2 weeks in a hospital, my bill was the equivalent of 800 US dollars. I'm grateful it was there.

Bush is no conservative. He was a compassionate conservative, code name for progressive. He started wars like progressives always have, and grew government across the board much faster than inflation.

Ike sent in the national guard to integrate the school in little rock. Your pal Nixon made a major national effort to integrate schools.

Women's Suffrage predated the Progressive Era by 50 years. Loony tunes trying to take credit for it. Major gripe was the 14th didn't mention women, at the time.

Clinton burned all the technology capital built up before he took office. The Internet and computers preceded his presidency by at least 20 years. His VP ran around like the idiot he is talking about the "Information Superhighway," which wasn't the internet, but something else. What, nobody knows. Reagan's huge increase in military spending was a huge boost for the Defense Dept. DARPA program that refined TCP/IP and other protocols. The www browser was invented in 1989 at my alma mater, 4 years before Clinton took office. The microprocessor was refined for use in rockets and fighter jets where heavy components reduce other payload and performance characteristics.

Progressives supported eugenics and prohibition and many things anti Liberty. And wars, like the two big ones, Korea, Vietnam, and Teddy's Spanish-American War.

They claim to be for democracy, yet their brand is a bunch of unelected govt. officials wielding power in absurd ways against the little guy.

They come across like Robin Hood - STEAL from the rich to give to the poor. But the poor remain poor.

This president is a fine man, but incompetent at governing. Putin cleaned his clock on the world stage, and his economic policies have put us deep into debt while prolonging the negative effects of the 2008 recession. Instead of action, we get excuses and passing the blame.

It cost $2800 for deluxe birthing suite in 1981 with all the bells and whistles. The average cost to deliver a child today is $30,000. Government and Progressives in action!

$17 Trillion in debt. Thanks Obama!

That's 17 with 12 zeroes.

You know, to call Nixon, "my pal" tells me you aren't understanding where I come from here. The military is not a democracy by anystretch, I was an E3 radioman dealing with ticker tape and hard copy from his office. We were pals in the same way you and Obama probably are. I've been very, very angry with the govt. I'm not now. You seem to be a financially savvy guy, you know todays dollars are not like 1952 dollars or 1982 dollars I'm guessing, so I'm sure your alma mater buddies saved the world with military expenditures and technological wonders, but probably, I'm guessing, we designed a few billion dollars worth of hardware that's in scrap heaps as well. Trim fat off govt, I'm all for it. I think the long term vision is hard to put in perspective given the short term patience of most folks. I'm optimistic about my children's futures and prospects. I talked around the world with an ancient teletype machine, things have come a long way. My Clinton reference was to his presidency being called the age of technology and end of the industrial period. That's all. I think we're past the problems you seem on edge about and in the process, but the solution is not going to be realized for a couple of decades. It's worth taking the time to get some things right.Including all those zeros. By the way, it's worth mentioning that we've forgiven a lot of debt since WWII.

Denny may join the Conservative ranks yet.

Nah, I'm thinking he's a progressive, the whole Putin cleaned our clock is just a way to start a war with Russia. Obama's more careful that

Want to take the time here once again to thank you guys for giving me things to contemplate and I learn something everytime here. It does not go unappreciated! I learned quite a bit about the topic in the process.

Federal law trumps state law.

Article VI, clause 2

This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding.

Okay. Read my post again. Everything that is not taken by the Federal Government is by definition given to the States. Get it?

It has the right to declare war.

And the constitution is not a list of negative rights. It is a list of rights granted to government and a limited list at that.

Progressives believe and act like government owns everything and grants us our rights and property and other bits of well being. What government does is get in the way and cost way too much and make things cost way to much.

Now you're being obtuse. By limiting what the government can do to you, means by definition, what is not there is what the government can't do to you. Hence negative rights.

The problem was penmanship. I told those Founders to write better, but would those young punks listen? They wanted to run outside and name rivers after themselves.

Factoring in inflation, your 1980 dollars are worth about $2.50 today. That's not 10x, which is what $30K vs. $2800 is (cost of medical procedure).

I view the Constitution as a series of negative rights. It's a list of what the government cannot do to you. Also, anything that is not taken by the Federal government is by definition given to the states.

Technically, the constitution is a list of positive rights. The negative rights are what are not listed, which is "everything else." The positive rights require action, like forming the military or building post office buildings.

If you meant the bill of rights, then say so.

and the cost of a medical degree should factor in as well ya think?

Expansion of medicare/medicaid. Regulations on insurance companies and drug manufacturers. Deep pockets to bill, so the doctors and instrument companies and pharmas charge more.

Duh.

Same is true for education, too. Govt. pays, so the schools charge more.

I'm not going to get into a semantic debate with you. You can go do that shit with KingSpeed. I made my point, and you can run along your merry way.

If you're going to act like an intellectual, semantics matter.

It's funny how nobody who truly knows all about the constitution has become a politician...
