UK, February 4, 2010 - Sonic is returning to his 2D roots as Project Needlemouse is revealed to be Sonic the Hedgehog 4, a direct continuation of the 16 bit games that's coming to all major consoles this Summer.

SEGA announced that it's to be an episodic, downloadable title that will follow on from 1994's Sonic & Knuckles and feature 2D play borne out with 3D visuals. A Gamespot interview reveals that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions will sport 1080p support, while the Wii version will make use of motion controls.

Sonic has already been confirmed as the only playable character in the game, and his old school moveset is joined by the homing attack of the more recent games. Sonic the Hedgehog 4's music is also to tip its hat to Sonic's past, reworking old themes and styles.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is subtitled Episode 1 – though there's no word on when the other episodes would land. We'll bring you more from SEGA as we get it.

So I was excited for this, even though I was basically 100% sure it was Sonic The Hedgehog 4 anyways. But yea, I'm excited. I was a HUGE Sonic fan back in the day and consider Sonic The Hedgehog 2 as a top 5 game all time for me. I'm glad they're finally going back to their roots and ditching this horribly implemented 3D crap. And thank god for no fucking Werehog...

I used to work for Sega and was working on Sonic II before I left.
