Rafael Compos Shoots 64, Leads Home Puerto Rico Open
Rafael Compos shot an 8-under 64 in front of his home fans Thursday to take the first-round lead in the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open.
The 27-year-old Compos had eight birdies in a bogey-free round at windy Coco Beach. He made four straight birdies on Nos. 9-12, added another on the par-5 15th and parred the final three holes.
Hometown hero Rafael Campos fired eight birdies in his eight-under par 64 on Thursday to seize a one-shot lead after the first round of the US PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open.
Despite playing in tougher afternoon conditions, Campos overtook early pace-setter George McNeil, the 2012 champion who had eight birdies and a bogey in a seven-under 65 that left him in solo second place.
Ian Poulter, without a win in more than four years, birdied two of the final four holes to grab the third-round lead at the Puerto Rico Open on Saturday.
World number 67 Poulter, the highest ranked player in the field, made a late decision to travel to the Caribbean island after missing out on a place in this week's WGC-Dell Match Play event by one spot.
Tony Finau won the Puerto Rico Open at Coco Beach on Sunday for his first PGA TOUR title, beating Steve Marino with a birdie on the third hole of a playoff at windy Coco Beach Golf and Country Club.
The 26-year-old Finau won with his third straight birdie in the playoff on the par-5 18th, blasting out of the back bunker to 3 feet.
