I am attending a funeral tomorrow at a Catholic Church.

It's been a few decades since I visited a Catholic Church, but I remember it being very ceremonial and structured.

They are having a rosary, followed by mass, then the military will salute him.

I'm atheist, but obviously don't wish to offend anyone.

Should I attend the entire service without actively participating, skip the rosary...?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I have family that is Catholic. It actually offends them more if you aren't a practicing Catholic and partake in their ceremonies.

You should have seen the verbal abuse I received when I tried to partake in the blood and body of Christ thingy. Not good!

Just sit down, follow what everyone is doing. You don't have to "pray" at all, just kind of stay there and be quiet. they aren't expecting you to do anything. Can you skip the rosary? That's usually separate from the service.

I don't find it true. Catholics aren't very rabid, a good majority of them are just going through the steps. When there is communion, you can just put your hands on your chest and just get a blessing, or you can just stay at your seat.

Okay let me rephrase to only "my experience". Catholic that knew I wasn't Catholic fond it very offensive.

yeah, it is kind of offensive in a sorts if they know you're not catholic and you take communion. the priest usually says you can get a "blessing".

El Pres has it right. having catholic grandparents and gone to a funeral as an atheist, just sit in the back and be quite, and you'll be fine.
