I have a wireless router in my house for the internet and we keep it 'locked'. How easy is it for someone to break into it electronically? Especially from a car on the street?

Thanks

pretty hard, it is usually a 10 or 13 digit encryption, soooo unless they break into your house, not gonna happen by the average computer nerd....

ANYTHING is hackable though, captain crunch hacked into the cia from a payphone

The "we've been hacked" excuse isn't going to work, you're just going to have to tell your wife it was ABM looking at teh gehy pron.

I have to be careful what I say, but here's the situation.

We have accidentally become involved in an investigation. We are not being investigated, but something we bought for a home computer ended up being part of some crime and it creates some sort of "ping" to another computer alerting the bad guys when this person was on line. We have turned it all over to the authorities yesterday. Now, 3 times today a beat up Hyundai has parked across the street from our house and someone inside keeps looking at our house and fiddles with some sort of computer looking box and then after 10 minutes they drive away. Soooooooooo, I was wondering if they were attempting to hack into our wireless.

Step out of your house, walk to the front of the car and take a picture of the car's licenses plate. Then walk up to the person sitting in the car and ask what the fuck he is doing.

Then when he opens the window to talk to you, pee on him. Then run away!

Call the cops on this car!

it sounds like someone might be downloading illegal michael mcdonald mp3s from bit torrent sites using your ip address

They came back again and we did call the cops. Turns out they were interested in a house for sale/rent across the street and were hoping to meet someone about it. Dang, I wish I had followed barfo's advice.

Hahahahahahahaha!

Fuck BP you called the cops on them?!? Why not just go up to them and ask them what they are doing?

Now tell us more about this illegal ping thing.

someone has a guilty conscience....

The particular crime involved in all this is one where people get killed. We've been told that anyone associated with this should be considered "extremely dangerous". As such, I'll let the cops take the hit.

Typical liberal demorat letting big government solve all your problems.

j/k, what the hell has ABM gotten you involved in?

Damn..... what did you get yourself into FAMS!!??

Damn, BP's living the Thug Life in the 'Couv.

when somebody sells you a used hard drive that used to belong to an accused murderer, and the police take it for evidence, and then you get scared that the murderers accomplices are going to kill you, buy a gun

Sounds like a cover story, whether for the police or the murderer. Did you at least write down the license plate? Years ago I did this a couple times in Washington State and the state offices told me who it was over the phone, no problem.

The most important thing to do is to tell all your friends that if you get murdered, they'll notify this board. So you need to tell everyone in your neighborhood the codes in your router.

What I can say is that the feds are involved and I bought an XBox with some things left on the memory that is a violation of federal law. I reported it to the authorities and now all hell has broken loose. If the people are caught, it's probably 30 years to life. As to the ping thing (I really don't know computers- intentionally), everytime the XBox is powered up it sends some sort of message to the bad guys that it is in use and then they do whatever they do. There was originally a targeted person on my end and then it was sold on CL to me. I realized the problem immediately and also realized it was deeply serious. So here I am.

does it rhyme with "iddy dorn"?

I wonder if maybe you should get an external HD, put all your vital information on it, and not have that hooked up to the internet/computer.

Sentences are too high nowadays. I hope you can get it down to the minimum 30 years. Man, all you did was buy an X-Box.
