Quick says look for a trade on draft night for a center

Says he feels that we will do a trade with our draft pick and absorb a contract for center from a team that is trying to save money or create room to go after LeBron. He specifically mentions the Clippers (DeAndre Jordan) and Cleveland (Anderson Varejao). Thoughts?

Jordan vs Varejao vs Gortat

Its hard to compare because of Anderson's injuries the last few years which is a concerns in and of itself. I suppose as mentioned here before Gortat could be an option in that kind of trade too

Varejao hasn't played more than 31 games in 3 seasons. And he'll be 31 next year. Given our history with centers, I doubt he's on the list.

Jordan would be a nice get.
 
Well, either one would be a nice addition. Jordan isn't much of a defender or rebounder. He can sure dunk and block a few shots. The good part is he is 24 and still may have a lot of upside.

Varejao would seem a great fit, except for age. Hustle player who has turned into a fantastic rebounder. He is not a shot blocker. Both have good size and are experienced. I'm not sure we can expect much better.

Jordan would be a bit risky, but probably the best move if they could pull it off.

If Andy V were 5 years younger and even a bit more durable, he'd be a perfect fit.

He seems to be the prefect fit for a team (Clippers) full of players that need touches. Doesnt make sense. Varejao seem to0 injured and too old. Makes me wonder if Gortat is the target since Quick didnt mention him specifically.
 
I am really hoping Robin Lopez is the guy. That would still leave us a bunch of money for a bench guy or two

Seems pretty far fetched that they'd expose themselves by not having a starting C for a whole year just to get a chance at luring LeBron next summer.

I like your Lopez idea better. He doesn't have Jordan's flash, but nearly as much substance.
 
If we did add Varejao, I would assume it'd also involve Cleveland sending us other assets. He's owed $19m over the next two years. For us to take on that turd of a contract, the offer would have to be pretty sweet.

I could see us adding him in as part of a bigger deal. I'd like to have him on the team because he is a solid player and exactly the type of guy we need at center. And I think he'd be a great role model for Leonard.

But with his contract, he's a guy you don't just take because you like him. You take him grudgingly because there are sweeteners to the deal.
 
I think I could live with Jordan. You'd have to leave him out at the end of games because of his foul shooting, but that's OK, because the Blazers frequently go small and move Aldridge to center in those situations.

In any case, I don't have a problem trading the pick whatsoever; that's all the pick ever represented to me anyway -- more of an "asset" than an actual player.

Jordan's free throw shooting would be a late game liability which is when we would need his shoot blocking presence the most. Is that why Jordan on plays 24 minutes per game?
 
Shit and you guys complain about what's lacking in JJ's game......... and then we're going to bring in JORDAN!
 
niether one of those players propels this team that far forward.....probably playoffs, but not going anywhere once they make them.....

I'm not a big fan of Jordan; but the complaint on hickson isn't offense. It's the defense he is terrible at. We would sacrifice offense for defense; but in this case, that's actually going to make us better.
 
Regardless of what happens, I'm just glad Olshey saw past Hickson's numbers. I was sucked into that double double streak until halfway through the season when I realized his impact wasn't nearly what his stats indicate.

Easy, he is not very coachable; he doesn't defend well, despite being a very good shot blocker; he is a mediocre rebounder; he has little offensive game outside of dunks (which he does very well - so that's something); and he can't finish games due to horrible free throw shooting.

Jordan I am not that excited about. He is far from ideal. Lot's of holes to his game. See above. And yet, because of the SportsCenter highlight dunks and blocks and because he is so young, brimming with "potential", he is VASTLY overrated IMO, and will only come at a very high cost to the Blazers. I think he would be a terrible value proposition.

Varejao would be a great fit with the team, except for his injury problems. That is bad ju ju for this team. However, if Cleveland is looking to dump him just to get rid of his salary, I think taking a chance and bringing in another center - like a Dalembert, and having an extended big rotation, including two that are defensive oriented and proven, would be a good way to go.

Jordan occasionally blocks shots, but is as poor a post defender as Hickson is even though he is 3 inches taller son.
 
May as well go after Bynum if we're interested in Varejo. He's younger and just as injury prone.

How is it that we always forget this? I'm sure deals can happen pre-moratorium and will be announced afterwards.

Our trade for Bayless wasn't "official" on draft night, because we needed the next season's salary figures to make it work, but we still knew about it on draft night. I would imagine if a deal was made, we'd find out about it.

Deals can be agreed upon, but both parties would have to follow thru with the deal weeks after the draft. Would you trust an organization run by Donald Sterling to do that? I would also think they do not do a straight salary dump until the ink on CP3's deal is dry.

You had definite numbers though. I do not think there has been a deal made with anticipation of the salary cap on draft night.
 
I think 1st round picks will be much more valuable under the new CBA because they lock a player in at a cheap price

Meaning we don't know how much space we'd have? I'm pretty sure at the least, the cap can not go down, so they'd know a minimum amount they would have that they can fit under.
