Its just different ways of doing the same thing and it really depends on how your teacher likes their papers to be organized. Footnotes are neater through the actual paper and can look more professional, I suppose. For the most part, my prof's have let me put the author name and page number in paranthesis because they don't like to make a big deal about referencing, but my history classes (and the rare poli sci one) have all required proper footnotes.
