My parents would be annoyed (still are, I guess) when I watched any cartoon they deemed inappropriate, like Simpsons or South Park. I just ignore them now
Food network is good, but that's the only thing my dad watches. I'm watching the NBA Finals, he grabs the control, and switches it to food network. And rachel Ray. Rachel, ****ing, Ray.

We are fairly careful. My oldest will be a 5th grader this fall and he won't be watching the Simpsons. Now a huge part of that is that he has younger siblings and all TV time for the kids is considered shared TV time.

I think adults make a big deal about teens being overly impressionable by TV and movies. IMO, friends and music have much more influence. I wouldn't worry too much with the 5th grader.
