6 yr deal...no exact figures yet but he is signed long term.

6 years, $6.5M is overpaid for a second line talent. Well, now we zero cap space left, so next offseason we will definitely lose Etem and Yandle so we might as well look at trading those two during the season for draft picks. I'll be especially mad if there's a NTC for Stepan.

That hit is about the best we could have hoped for after ROR/Saad/Kesler. Perfectly fine with it.

Quick question though. I thought we only had $6.1M left in the cap. If Stepan's hit is $6.5 how does this work? We obviously have to move someone, most likely Diaz, down to Hartford but then what was the point of signing him?

that's a lot but that's the going price. NMC would really suck, however.

Buffalo screwed the market up with that ROR contract. Even though Stepan couldn't use it in his arbitration hearing, he used it to justify what he perceived as his market value.

We had roughly 6.75 in cap space before this deal, and that includes 8D (the 6 plus Diaz and McIlrath). I doubt we have 8 on the roster come opening day.

I thought I had read on NHL.com we only had $6.1M. Never mind then lol

GeneralFanager.com is a pretty good site for checking on caps (probably the best now that capgeek is gone). They have us with about 425k of space left.

Ok. Thanks for that. Tough to figure out an accurate site now with cap geek gone.

If they gave him a NTC or NMC, I'm personally going to drive to MSG and kick Gorton in the nuts.

I hadn't realized Saad had signed an extension. 6/$36 is going to hurt next year when Kreider is due for a raise. Ouch.

and i don't view Kesler as a comparable, as he's a finished product, an UFA, and has had a long successful career.

I expect the Rangers to move Nash next off season. Mark staal could also be an option to be move for this team to keep a majority of the youth going forward after this season.

The problem with Staal is that, even though he's a good dman, he has a high hit and has a NTC so he can determine where he goes.

I turned about to be pretty close. I said 6 years 6 mill per +/-. Happy Stepan was smart about it and accepted and very fair deal for all involved. Just because Buffalo went nuts on ROR doesn't mean that was the market setting deal.

I am with you Prod, I like this deal. I said yesterday I want no part of anything that started with a 7. Getting Step long term for 6.5 per is very fair. To me it shows the ROR deal was not the market setter IMO...and rightfully so.

The Staal resigning is the one mistake I see on the roster now. Has to be him or Yandle, I standby that comment...cannot have both long term.

Next year get Hayes and Kreider and Miller done. All are behind Stepan, so will be less on their next deals.

I think we are in as good of a spot as we could be considering everything. Just need to make a choice on Staal or Yandle. I would choose Yandle, but not sure we can get out from under Staal's deal.

And no shot we have 8 dmen on the roster, so I expect a little extra cap space. Figure 7 dmen and 13 forwards.

Stepan is not eligible for a no-trade in the first two-years of the deal but is believed to have gotten a no-trade in years 3 and 4 of the deal and a limited no-trade in years 5 and 6.

I might have to flip a coin to see if I kick Gorton in the nuts. That's interesting. So they can deal him during the first 2 years. That's comforting. Staal has a limited no trade clause after the 3rd year of his deal. So, they can dump him after next season. Not this season.

To me the key is being able to move Staal, otherwise we should move Yandle. My guess is they want to let it play out. Keep Yandle now, see how we are doing in season, and then decide.

Two things I cannot see though:

1. Us letting Yandle walk after next season for nothing.
2. Us signing Yandle long term if Staal is still here.

Going to be interesting to see how it plays out.

Not crazy about 6.5 but this is what the market is bearing. At least its for 6 years and hopefully in 2 it will look like a good deal. Really wish gorton could figure out a team that would part with a mid round pick only(no bodies back) and take boyle that boyle would be happy going to. At least we pick up 4.5 from boyle next year to pay kreids. Unfortunately, someone in the staal, Yandle and klein group needs to be dealt now to pick up more cap space for hayes etc going forward. Although contract is done I wonder if gorton is investigating what a ten acquiring stepan woulfd bring back to the rangers in terms of players, prospects and draft picks.

This is exactly the number Chuck and I said he would sign at. Six years and $39 million.

Stepan is about $1M/yr overpaid but we had to do it. Not crazy about the limited time in which to trade him as in the next 2yrs is when we probably have our best chance to win a Cup, so doubt Gorton rocks the boat like that and trades Stepan during those 2 seasons. It looks like he's here for the long haul, and at $6.5M he better be a 70pt player going forward.

I don't think 6.5 per is crazy when you look at comparable players/deals in the NHL. Now he does need to become a year 60 + point guy, I agree, but given his role with the team and his ability to play both ends of the ice, I think it is a good deal for all involved.

Two years left as an RFA...so two years with no trade restrictions...makes sense. We added the no trade for his UFA years. To me we cannot deal him for two years on his deal. The last two years he has to submit 15 teams he would go to, so we can deal him to half the league. I really don't count that as a major no trade issue. So it is years 3 and 4 only IMO.

Stepan is gonna glide around the ice now that he's gotten his big payday. He's never been a gritty guy at all, and now that he's got his money it's gonna get worse I fear. He already is awful on faceoffs, which will get worse because you have to have heart to win those, which he doesn't. Hopefully he'll prove all us doubting him wrong
