The Rangers may be willing to add one more-year to their offer to Ryan Callahan, making is six-years and $36 million. This is as far as the team will go for Callahan, “there’s nothing more within the realm of reason that can be done to entice the captain to remain on Broadway.” (NY Post)

-GH on NYR and Marty St. Louis: “He got two more goals today, I don’t think he is going anywhere. He has been lights out since coming back from the Olympics. He is staying, there is no question.”
-GH on Ryan Callahan: “Callahan is the interesting one, he started off looking for $7 million times seven years..ha ha, nice trick, next joke. He is not going to get that, now there is this big standoff on whether they re-sign him at a more reasonable number and a more reasonable term or they make a trade. Rumblings today that I have heard, if they do make a trade an interesting landing spot for him would be Buffalo. He is from Rochester, Buffalo just made a trade for Chris Stewart. Could these two work out something with one another. My heart believes that the Rangers will work hard to get him signed.”

Buffalo is reportedly willing to pay Callahan whatever he wants.

-EF on Ryan Kesler: “I think there is a good chance and from talking to people around the league it seems that the most aggressive suitor is Pitt. I think this is something they would like to do. I had heard some rumblings about Chicago trying to make it work as a number two center behind Toews but Stan Bowman said today that they aren’t doing it. No one believes him but he says they aren’t doing it. Teams also believe that the Canucks are much more serious about dealing Kesler than Edler, teams don’t think Edler is getting dealt unless the return is massive. The final one is that Eddie Lack is starting the game tomorrow. Luongo is backing up and disappointed by it. I think some people think that the Canucks are trying to explore to see if the market for Luongo is any easier than it was last year.”
-GH on Vancouver, “Eddie Lack came back from the break and has played two games and gave up 1 goal. You aren’t going to play him? You had Luongo and lost seven in a row. It’s about winning hockey games, it’s not about the drama of goaltending. He deserves to play and they need him to play and they need points.“
-GH on Kesler: “I agree, 100%. Even when he was in Sochi anybody that would give him a bit of an ear, he would let them know ‘yea, I am outta here. I am gone.’ Yea, they need to improve their team, they need to do drastic things and have very little flexibility with their contracts. He is a big piece that you can get a lot back for. No question that he is gone before Wednesday.”

If Kesler gets dealt why wouldn't we be right in that mix? Why should Pitt get him to add to their collection of stars? And this isn't an Iginla situation where they get the player for one playoff run, they add Kesler and the next 3 playoffs (including this one) they have Cindy, Malkin, Neal, Kunitz, Kesler. We should be working hard on Kesler.

I know some say no way on Stepan, but I add him in an offer. Step, plus a pick and a decent prospect for Kesler and I do it.

I'll tell you something else, it may look like Cally gets re-signed before the DL, but we better do something. If this is two years ago all over again, I will be furious at Sather. If he sits on his useless a** and does nothing for this team, why should we even watch? Why should we pay $1 to watch them play? It would be a joke AGAIN by Sather if we add nothing.

As for 6 years 36 mill for Cally, like I said yesterday, I do it but don't love it. I wanted 10-11 mill combined on Girardi and Cally, looks like it may be 11-12 mill combined, which I guess isn't awful. 6 mill per for 6 years really seems like too much for Cally, but I guess Sather feels we have no choice. I do it, but feel a little dirty about it.

3/2/14: 7:34AM: Callahan is searching for $6.75 million per season because “he knows” he can get that as a UFA. The Sabres are expected to make a push for Callahan. (Ottawa Sun)
-Callahan’s agent has said that he isn’t asking for anything crazy.

Many think that Callahan will be signed by the Rangers and if Callahan isn’t signed by the deadline it’s doubtful he will be traded. (Ottawa Sun)

The Penguins are aggressively pursing Ryan Kesler and he is at the top of their list for players to acquire at the deadline. (Pitt Tribune)

A proposed deal would send Brandon Sutter, likely a first and a third round pick in 2014 and either Simon Despres or Brian Dumolin. (Pitt Tribune)
-The price on Kesler is high and includes an established NHLer, likely a center between 20-25, a top prospect that is preferred to be a forward and a first round pick. (Bob McKenzie)

The Penguins are the top team on Kesler’s wish list as he wants to play for a cup contender and just finished playing under Dan Bylsma and GM Ray Shero in the Olympics. (Pitt Tribune)

The Blackhawks, Red Wings and Flyers are the other teams that Kesler would accept a trade to. (Pitt Tribune)

Here I am 3 days before the trade DL, and I am getting angry already. I see it coming. Pitt adds ANOTHER stud upfront. We sign Cally to a dumb extension. And we do NOTHING else to improve the team.

I am really starting to get fired up already.

If Cally is ALL about money because Buffalo will sign him to be their face DEAL HIM NOW. I am now fed up with Cally. To me there is no more well we don't really know what he wants talk. It is CLEAR he wants 7 mill or close to it for 5 or 6 years. Everyone has reported that. And I say F him. Deal him now. I am fed up with his BS.

Issue is what can we really get for him? He is a rental. Teams know he wants a ridiculous joke of a deal. Teams know Buffalo will most likely be willing to give him that ridiculous joke of a deal.

We are really in a bad spot with Cally considering all of that. Not a good spot to be in. Thank you Captain. Keep doing what you do. I almost dislike Cally now.

"A proposed deal would send Brandon Sutter, likely a first and a third round pick in 2014 and either Simon Despres or Brian Dumolin. (Pitt Tribune)"

That's a crap offer. Try something like

Bennett, Harrington and Pouliot. Sutter is a checking forward. Pitt doesn't like Despres as it is.

I would not offer Callahan 6 years but if Sather did out of stupidity, there should be no NTC or NMC in that for sure.

It's going to be tough to get anything decent for Callahan without adding a pick or prospect with him. Teams will keep comparable players who are signed beyond this year. They may just have to bite the bullet and keep him the rest of the year, but i wouldnt go 6y. As for Kesler if he dosen't want NY it's a moot point but if he does its probably Stepan Miller and at least 2nd for him

Trade cally now for what you can get. He looks slow, old and broken down. I don't want a 3rd line player here for 6 mill a year because he wears a C on his jersey. Big shit. Worse scenario, let him play out the season and go on to buffalo. I'm sure there will be a free agent available that can match his meager production and not get hurt all the time. Maybe kristo will be ready. I'm with you chuck I will be pissed if we sign him now as he is so overpriced it will be ridiculous. And worse, since girardi got the nmc for 3 yrs you know cally will at least get that too. This sucks!!!

And that's not as good a deal from Pitt as the Rangers could offer. Stepan though he's sucked this year is better than Sutter, Miller gives them a forward and the pick would be higher in the round probably. Doumolin and Despres arent that great.

You're on smoke 71 if you offer Miller and Stepan. Told you before that offering Stepan straight up for Kesler is beyond stupid. Stepan is 6 years younger. That's a huge difference. His point production every season was going up before this year. This year to me is a blip on the radar. Part of it was he came in camp out of shape IMO because of his dumb contract. Part of it was Nash was useless the first 25 games. Part of it is he's breaking in a rookie in Kreider who has stretches where he seems lost. Miller is going to replace Callahan if they trade him.

I think Stepan is a good not great center. He disappears for long stretches. I don't want to move him but would for Kesler

Oh no. We won't get Kesler. How will the team succeed. Who cares. He's not even a guy that is physically intimidating any more. He's not what will put this team over the top. What this team needs is a better scoring third line and an intimidator on defense like McIlrath. Richards and Callahan don't fit this system.

I think they are going to cave on Cally because there is no market for him since nobody but Buffalo will give him what he wants

6 years 36m for Cally makes me puke he will be a 35-40 pt player those last 3 years

71, you are nutty here like dump said. Why would you deal Stepan AND Miller in a package for Kesler...NO WAY.

I would deal Stepan in a package for Kesler though. Add in a decent prospect, and a decent pick (2nd or 3rd rounder). That would be my offer. Stepan has good value I am telling you that. A young C like him who has 60 + point potential, and should get better, I think he has very high value. That would be a solid haul for the Canucks IMO.

As for Kesler wanting to come to NY, if he doesn't so be it. He can control that. Obviously all of what I am saying hinges on Kesler saying yes to being a Ranger.

As for Cally, we agree Dis. 6 for 36 is too much for Cally. I do think we will go there, or have already, the question is does Cally take that.

I am so f'ing fed up with Cally as I said earlier. So it is really ALL about money. Girardi took 5.5 per. He clearly would have gotten more if he went UFA, but instead took a solid deal to stay a Ranger. Meanwhile our captain, who to me has lesser value than Girardi, is asking for 7 mill per, or close to it. It really is insane when you think about it, and VERY selfish. Don't tell me you want to win and don't tell me you want to be a Ranger first and foremost Cally...that is BS.

And yes Cally will get a NTC, or at least some sort of NMC in his new deal. That is all the rage now. Pretty much all players getting some sort of NMC in their deals.

The whole thing angers me. Add on top on that useless Sather most likely doing NOTHING again, and it is the perfect storm.

What this team needs is a 1st line center, or at the very least another 2nd line C. Step isn't a 1st liner and we need someone at C who can give us more than 50pts. Understand Kesler has been in the 50pt range for a while as well, but he's a more complete player, more physical and maybe playing with Nash and a more open system gets him closer to his 70+pt seasons.

let's see what Cally actually signs for before judging whether it's only about money. A 6/36 offer is only $500k more a year than Girardi, who is looked at as a "team guy" b/c he could have gotten more in FA.

Doesn't sound like he is taking that but agree we should let it play out

Kesler got 70 points because he played with the Sedins in his their prime and was on that PP unit. Kesler has had 1 50 point year, 1 40 point year, two 70 point seasons. Those were over 2 1/2 seasons ago. In those seasons he had 26 and 30 of his points on the PP. He is not a 70 point player. He's not a 60 point guy IMO. So trading him for Stepan is dumb.

We will see, agreed 31. My guess is it will be minimum 6 mill per cap hit wise, for 5 or 6 years. If he re-signs for less than that then opinions will change on Cally again. If he signs for a cap hit of 6 mill per or more, I think it shows it was really just about the money for him. But we'll see you are correct. But the second he re-signs for 6 mill or more per I think it shows us what he was all about.

I do not think Cally is even worth a 6 mill cap hit, especially for 5 or 6 years. Ideally he should be in the low to mid 5's tops IMO. But we pretty much know that won't happen. I think Girardi is/was worth more than Cally, and he settled at 5.5 per.

Plus Cally has us IMO. No one will sign him for close to 7 mill per long term, outside of maybe Buffalo. So that means his trade value is that of a rental really. Which means we cannot really get good value, and still have a team that can maybe win a playoff round or two this spring.

It really is a tough spot Cally has put us in I believe. We'll see how it plays out over the next 3 days.

If you look at a player like Weiss, overall he has more points the past 6 years leaving this year out. In the previous 6 seasons Weiss had 317 points on a crap team. Kesler had 306 points on a very good team. You could get Weiss for nothing. Right now you could probably package Boyle and Dorsett for Weiss.

And BTW...I do want to say again I do not begrudge Cally one drop for making it about the money, and trying to get as much as he possibly can. That is 10000000% his right.

All I say is don't also tell me it isn't about the money, and how badly you want to stay a Ranger first and foremost. That is where I call BS for sure.

If they go 6y, which is a little much, maybe they get him to agree for a little less than 6m. Unlikely but that would make it a little more acceptable. 6/34 or something.

Fact: Kessler does not want to come to the Rangers. Interested in Pittsburgh,
Chicago, Detroit or Philadelphia. Why would he not want to come to the
Rangers? AV? Coming to NY is not the fastest way to get the SC.....who knows.

It dosen't make sense, he'd rather go be behind Malkin/Crosby than be instantly the #1 here and play with Nash/Kreider. The AV thing may be factoring in but I didn't hear that he ruled NY out completely?
