Rangers may be willing to go to six-years for Ryan Callahan

I know they had some issues but I thought i saw AV mention they weren't a big deal anymore. He's not really what Pitt needs most anyway.

I bet the Rangers sign Callahan for 6 years $35m. Not horrible but not great either. That contract will be tough to swallow on the back half especially. I also think they are wary of valuable heart and soul guys who contribute more than points leaving (see Prust). Plus he is a very popular player even with his ridiculous contract demands.

The whole Callahan stuff is pretty frustrating but with the cap going up paying him $6m isn't good but they will have a ton of cap space to still improve the team in the offseason.

They'll regret the extra year or two of both RC and Girardi but I guess they could deal them and eat salary if it comes to that.

don't know how anyone could be mad at cally, he isn't doing anything on the ice to make you feel any different then you did a year or 2 ago, he's really not a game changer...his rep is doin what he's supposed to do, cally is still playing the game the best he can play it...is he a great player, NO! is a he a great team leader NOT REALLY, what he is is a blue collar player who gives his best nite in and nite out!

and all these comparisons, have we not learned anything about what players from other teams has done, to come here and b a bust!

only problem with the current team i c is consistency.. u beat cup champs to lose to a bottom cellar next game

Pasta. People are down on cally because he is over valuing himself by two million and two years. By asking or demanding that salary he is telling everyone he is more important than the team. He is an above average player looking to get start type of money

My hope is either trade cally for what you can get or keep him till end of the season and let him walk and replace him in free agency. Signing him to anywhere near 6 mill and above for 6 years is lunacy and he will quickly become a hated player by the fans as his numbers continue to dwindle.

Maybe a team will overpay for Cally at the deadline

I still think he gets signed for 6/36 but I just hope they move him

Being told Steve Yzerman is CLOSE to pulling the trigger on a Marty St.Louis trade.

9:19AM: Callahan is down from his demands of seven-years and $7 million per year to SIX-YEARS and something less than $7 million, “maybe in the $6.5 to $6.75 million range.” (Bob McKenzie)

9:17AM: Callahan is down to six-years and at a number that is less than $7 million but not close to $6 million. (Bob McKenzie on TSN 1260)

I still deal him. I don't even want 6/36 anymore. That is too much and too long. And if it is 6/38 or 6/39 that is even worse.

we have to admit, there aren't many team fan bases that would react the way we (including myself) are towards the possible resigning of the team's captain.

DONT DO IT SLATS!

I think it will be more than 6/36 Dis. I say 6/38 or 6/39. And that is awful.

And I hear you Al, but Cally is flat out insane here. The guy is a 22/45 player and he wants close to 7 mill per? I mean come back down to earth.

I REALLY hope Sather looks big picture here and doesn't do 6/39 or 6/38 or even 6/36. Too long and too much per.

I hope Sather stands firm and gets Cally down to earth (which really would be mid 5's) or we move on.

Call Yzerman Slats, Call Yzerman now slats and deal this future albatross captain before its too late. I like the ring of goal by St. Louis.

what I would like to see is the great captain to get the boot. He is so overrated for what he does. You can develop Miller into that role and get more out of him for much cheaper price.

9:25AM: Callahan is down on the ground from beating taken by irate Ranger fans for his contract demands

10:26AM: Callahan’ side showed a willingness to drop the seven-year request before the Olympic break and he is looking for between $6.25 and $6.5 million per season. People on both sides sound “no more optimistic now” than they were before. (ESPN NY)

9:54AM: Callahan’s latest offer to the Rangers is six-years and and just south of $6.5 million, which is still too much money per year for the Rangers. (ESPN.com)

The Rangers are holding the line at six-years and $6 million per season. (Bob McKenzie)

9:36AM: Strang says that Callahan going to SIX-YEARS happened BEFORE the Olympic break so, “temper any optimism accordingly.” (Strang)

9:32AM: Katie Strang confirms that Callahan has come off of his request of seven-years but the two sides are still far apart on money. (Strang)

9:30AM: “Is gap enough for NYR to trade captain by Wed? Or enough for captain to want to go elsewhere? Or could 6 x $6.25M make both unhappily happy?” (McKenzie)

The Rangers may be willing to add one more-year to their offer to Ryan Callahan, making is six-years and $36 million. This is as far as the team will go for Callahan, “there’s nothing more within the realm of reason that can be done to entice the captain to remain on Broadway.” (NY Post)
Just the fact that we are talking about making the playoffs should be a sign that the Rangers are not serious contenders for the cup. This is a team of role players, plus Rick Nash and a still maturing Chris Kreider. Richards is useless. Stephan has taken a step back not forward, Hagelin is slacking.

This team can win a game or two against Pitt or Boston in a 7 game series, but that's it. If they do make the playoffs as a 7 or 8 seed, they are not advancing. Even as a 5 or a 6 they are not getting past the second round. That's a serious problem. Giving Cally 6 years are close to $7 million per IS NOT the answer. Trade him now for a guy that can score. Change the direction of the franchise that is completely and totally mired in mediocrity.

"All you have to do is make the playoffs." While I agree it doesn't look like this team is a legit Cup contender right now, it's not unusual for teams to get hot and start clicking during the playoffs. Look at the Kings from a few years ago, they didn't look like Cup contenders in February/March either.

Not saying it will happen for this team, but this team surely isn't as bad as some people like to make it out to be. If all three lines actually get hot at the same time and Hank plays like he's capable, look out.

I know Sorr, it's unreal how people overreact on this board. I dont remember it being this bad on ESPN.

From the end of their nine game road trip up until the Olympic break, this team had the second best record in the entire Eastern Conference. The past 4 games they have played the Pens, Blackhawks, Flyers, and Bruins, and went 2-2-0. That's not awful against those kinds of opponents. Room to improve for sure, but not awful. Maybe we'll get some size in here at the DL, and for the love of god we need Big Mac up now. John Moore hasn't done crap this season, we're seeing why Columbus gave up on him.

The game thread from last night read like a chat room for a bunch of teenage girls. Yet when we win, a lot of those guys are not around. Funny.

whoa...who isn't around when we win Prod?
are we a good team....we are an average team and when push comes to shove we are below talent level of the real good teams.
yes we can beat a Pittsburgh and a Chicago on any given night, but to beat them four times in a series, the probability is not that good with the roster we have.

there is something that is call being realistic, and we are what we are...a average team that has to play its A game to beat the better teams in the league, while the elite teams can play their B game and beat us

Wasnt referring to you at all Al. There's a solid group of guys who contribute meaningful discussion to the board.

I am usually pretty optimistic but I agree with Al. Sather wont sell but he should at this point. We have a great 2-3 year potential window though starting in 2015 and that is how this team should think. Lots of cap space coming up. Need to get creative on trade front.

Oh and need to dump our Captain before Wed

At this point Callahan is killing us. His ridiculous demands make it certain that whatever team trades for him won't be resigning him. That significantly lowers the return we'd be able to get for him. Even for most rentals there's at least the possibility they might resign with the team that trades for them. Callahan's demands are well known and so ridiculous that other team's wont part with anything meaningful. Really a shame because I respect the hell out of the guy.

That means we have to really sweeten the pot to get something. I trade Kristo with him. We have enough smallish forwards. Or, just get Stewart. He's big, skilled, and faster than people (myself included) had given him credit for. I watched a couple of his games after the rumors came up. He'd do well here.

I was called out last night being a pessimistic old fart basically for not drinking the kool aide on a good first period. not by you..and I know what ya saying Prod, but this is what it is...so easy to get frustrated when you know we are a couple of players away

Yes I agree 100% with this. But that doesnt mean the whole team sucks, dump Hank, trade everybody, burn down MSG....
