I think the best case scenario is they play McIlrath, Boyle gets fed up, they trade him half-way thru the season for a vet, right shooting forward on the last year of his contract.
 
Im disappointed we didnt jump on the Talbot-Hayes swap. Then we could have gotten all picks for Hagelin. But it is what it is, hopefully more is to come.
 
I liked Hayes also, but the issue is he was a pending RFA also, and I bet wanted 3 mill per, or close to it. If he was signed I think we would have been much more likely to make a move like that.

At any rate, we are where we are. I think we needed to move Hags, who was getting 3.5 or more, and can be a UFA next summer. Etem can be a decent bigger 3rd line guy for us at 2.5 mill less against the cap. Now we need to add the R shot top 6 winger and move forward.
 
I'd much rather have Etem. I don't believe in Kevin's brother. I think his season last year was a fluke. I also think he's getting close to the age where if he somehow scored 20 goals here, he would want 3 million like Hagelin. Made no sense. You can probably give Etem a 3 year deal at 1.2 million. If he breaks out, then he will get paid down the line.
 
On the fence with Haggerty. I thought he would score more last year in the AHL. I think the Rangers really liked Klingberg with Lindberg. Klingberg is huge. I'm not sure if he went to the KHL. I hope not. I would like a 4th line of Klingberg-Moore-Lindberg.
 
I figure Etem falls in somewhere from 1 mill to 1.3 mill, and Hags at 3.5 or more, so we will save between 2/2.5 mill or a little more, which was badly needed for sure. That is a big plus, and maybe Etem scores 5 or 6 less goals, but isn't the PK guy Hags is of course.
 
7 picks in the draft, 7 left handed shots. You would think they would try to draft some right handed shots once in a while.
 
The fact moron Brooks called Etem not as skilled as Hagelin and said he was a poor mans Hagelin shows the guy is senile and has no clue or does any research. Etem has a lot more skill and the players are absolutely nothing like each other.
 
So for all the crap a couple of morons spouted here about going for it now and how good the deals were. Sather spent all draft trying to build for the future again while adding one asset to plug in the lineup. That pretty much spells out that Sather thought his deals were a complete failure. He is trying to unscrew his moves.
 
Give it a rest dump. He made these moves for the cap first and foremost, and then traded up in the 2nd round while adding a handful of lesser picks. We didn't get a first. We didn't add a 2nd.

I'm not a pick guy, so I never sweated it anyway, but dealing a few picks in the 20's while adding 3rd and 4th round picks doesn't make it all even.

But I will also add, if you are a pick guy it shows making those moves WAS worth it, because late 1st rounders are a crapshoot, and we dealt a backup goalie and a role player and added picks back. Now the picks we got back are more of a crapshoot obviously, but again we didn't deal top 10 or 15 picks anyway, so small chance we are getting a difference maker at 28 OR in the 3rd round.

If Hags was going to make 2 mill again next season ZERO shot he is dealt. And Talbot had to be dealt to save 650 K AND most importantly he was walking next summer anyway, so get something now.

So we dealt a backup goalie, who was overpaid as a backup for us AND a 3rd line role player who was going to make 3.5 mill or more, and was set to be a UFA next summer. That is the bottom line.

He was a good ranger... Again just like St. Louis and Richards, you can't argue against his tenure.... SCF, 2 ECF, Semi-final... Good luck, sad to see another homegrown guy switch hands.
 
Hags is a good guy and you know what you're going to get from him every season. When you need some cap flexibility though you can replace him. He also made the decision easier with his vanishing act in the playoffs.
 
Brooks is right though, this team is arguably worse than they were yesterday.. They have to find a way to get a Top 6 forward.... They should straight out tell that relic Boyle to waive his no trade clause... Either way they need another forward
 
That's the bottom line strud. If the Hags move gives us the ability to add the top 6 R shot winger we badly need, then it was a great move. If this is our team, then we would be worse and it was a bad move. I think it is that simple.

Going from Hags to Etem is a downgrade, but not a crazy downgrade. Etem may score 5/6 or so less goals...maybe, but he has more size and is a more physical player, which is big for us, and he has potential as well. So today you have to say that is a downgrade, but if Etem fits well here maybe it won't be, or worst case a small downgrade. On the 3rd line I think Etem will be fine and his size will help.

But this is all about the next move. If saving 650 K on the backup goalie and maybe 2.5 mill +/- going from Hags to Etem allows us to add the top 6 R shot winger, then it was an excellent move. If not...well then we have some issues.

Obviously it remains to be seen what he signs for, but if he signs for 3m or even up to 3.2 million, and we didnt even reach out to the guy, we'll that's pretty upsetting to hear. I thought they would at least try to keep him. I guess he really didnt factor into the plans at all. Still not how Id expect them to treat a home-grown guy who was a big part of the team.

severe salary cap problems?
I know of the Chicago Blackhawks....look
for them to unload some players at a much
lower price than they thought.

Brooks isn't right. He's a moron. What he's forgetting is that Miller, Hayes and Fast are all going to get better. Kreider also. He's making Hagelin out to be a star. He was basically a 15 goal role player. In Etem they acquired a player that can far exceed him. Brooks is a lazy bastard. He does no research and has very little knowledge of other teams players. His comment about Hagelin having more talent than Etem showed he's completely clueless. Etem was a first round pick who scored 60 goals in junior and lit up the AHL in his second year. He has a lot more talent than Hagelin.

The team needs to be built different. They can't continue to put non finishing tools with no hands or shots out on the ice. It hasn't worked. They need to add a veteran finisher if possible.

I'm with you Prod, if he signs for 3 mill +/- per I will be frustrated we moved him UNLESS we add what we need, and at this point we all know what that is.

Step back and look at it this way. There is a shot that even at 3 mill +/- Sather/Gorton said we cannot afford that, and add the R shot top 6 winger, and get bigger. So they had a plan at the start that said get rid of small MSL, get rid of smaller Hags (although for a smaller guy I actually thought Hags was good on the glass), add bigger Etem, and the add a bigger/gritty top 6 R shot winger.

If we do those things I will be 100% fine with dealing Hags even if he signs with the Ducks for 3 mill per. But if we don't turn that savings into anything but bringing back our own players, then I will be pissed.

What if we are sitting here next Sunday and they signed Williams, I would have zero issue with the Hags trade at that point.

Nash/Brass/Zucc
CK/Step/Williams
Miller/Hayes/Etem
Glass/Lindberg/Moore/Fast

If we end up with those lines, or replace Williams with some other top 6 R shot winger, I will feel good about things. That's why again I really think the Hags trade is all about the next move. If there is one I am cool. If there is not I am angry.
 
Very legit concern, but what can you do about that? You can say that with any player that's added. Of course it can happen. I think it will be fair to say that whichever played is added will get an extra year or two on the end, always happens with UFA deals, but you hope the first two or three seasons you can a lot out of the player and win a cup.

To me as long as we make the next move I am happy and fine. If we don't make the next move, and expect this to be our team, I will be angry and truthfully question how good we can be with Etem and Fast in the top 9. But I feel pretty darn confident this won't be the final team. That wouldn't mesh up at all with what we have done the past few seasons.

Jimmy Hayes would have been an interesting add... 6'6, could have played with his bro, maybe could hVe built on his 19 goal season
 
Posted this about Hagelin on another board. People haven't caught onto this in our fan base yet.

Hagelin at a young age is already on the decline offensively and this with a Rangers team that is getting stronger offensively. The last 4 years over 82 projected games he was on pace for 48, 41, 37 and 35 points. Not a good sign.
 
Many here say the Rangers need a top 6 forward.

I have not seen anything anywhere that the
Rangers are looking. Wednesday we'll know
for sure.
 
Eh, guys been in the league 4 years Dump, he is what he is a 30-45 point guy... Should get 2nd line duty with ANA and probably has a chance at 20 goals..
 
Not a big loss IMO. He never finished 85% of the time. For a team that loses every playoffs because they don't score enough, he's not the answer.
