What if we traded #11 and Shawn Williams to LA for Gasol?

We take best available at #6 (Best player to slip)

Re-sign Batum and Hickson

And bring in Claver

And sign Nash for two years.

Matthews
Batum
Aldridge
Gasol

We have a playoff team with large expiring contracts in two years.

We would be old, but with three allstars and potential rookie of the year if we draft for best athlete and not for position with #6.

Gasol is almost the worst contract in the NBA. I think taking on that alone would prevent us from signing Nash.

Both Nash and Gasol can be traded later - not worried about that. On paper we would be a good team. And LMA would benefit from having both. With our #6, we can go with Lillard (and he'll have the best teacher in Nash), or we can go big, Drummond or Lenard to back up LMA and Gasol while learning the game from two allstars, or we can go for the most talented scorer and see if he excells.

This is sort of a "Plan C" concept. If we can't move up and grab TRob and/or if all under-26 free agents get gobbled up.
 
My worst fear is that we draft 6 and 11 and we do not get anyone from free agency! Then what?

That would be awesome for sure. I am sticking with my tiered system and going from there. Realistically I'd like to see two of Barnes, Lillard, MKG, Ross, Drummond
 
It's amazing how Gasol went from "possible HOFer" to "possibly the worst contract in the NBA" in a matter of a year. Does anyone still think he's a HOFer? I never did.
 
Gasol was a dominant second option on back to back championship teams. He was on pace to be a HOFer when at that level of play but I admit he has fallen way off the last two seasons.

This trade makes no sense, first its impossible to take on Gasol's contract and sign Nash, we only have the cap room to do one or the other. On the Lakers end they are going to want vets to pair with Kobe for his final couple years; they don't want rookies that won't hit their prime until Kobe retires.

I wouldn't do a trade like this until we strike out in free agency and have no use of cap space. First lets try to sign good free agents, if we can't get any then put in some cheap amnesty bids on Elton Brand, Brandan Haywood, Jose Calderon, or others. If we still have unused cap space then we can consider adding an overpaid veteran on a 1 or 2 year contract. Adding Gasol would only make sense if we had the other pieces to compete for a title this year or the next.

I actually really like the Bobcats use of cap space, get an overpaid, but still very useful player on a 2 year deal and a draft pick that could end up eventually being a quality lottery pick.

What are the standards for Hall-of-Famer? He was the best PF in the league for about an 18 month period (after the decline of Duncan and Garnett) and actually may still be. I think the atmosphere in Lakerland is poisonous right now and he's too confrontation-averse to do anything about it. He's still got the best combination of scoring skills in a big man in the league. If the Lakers force-fed him the ball instead of letting Bryant shoot 60 million times a game, they would be a lot better off.

18 months isn't enough to justify a nod from the HOF. Shit.... Zach Randolph has probably been on the most consistent power forwards in the game for the past ten years but you don't see anyone putting him up for the HOF.

That would make NO sense. Unless we're getting Gasol for next to nothing and we plan on drafting/starting Lillard next season. Even still, doesn't make much sense to me.
 
How many years does Gasol have left on his deal? I tend to agree with Rasta, that his decline has been overstated and a significant portion of the perception that he's much worse is dysfunction in the Lakers' offense that isn't really attributable to him (in my opinion). He was a bit worse last year, as he wasn't scoring efficiently, but the year before was a vintage Gasol year in terms of production.
