Report: Josh Smith Will Not Sign Extension With Hawks

I would! I would say that he's not a max contract guy too.

I think just about any team would make room for him somehow. He could play any of the 3 front court spots in a pinch. My take is he's a bigger version of Gerald Wallace, but a lot younger than the one you guys had last season. Meaning I could see him at SF.

Leonard
Aldridge
Smith
Batum
Lillard.

I like the potential in that lineup!

So you agree with me that he's not a max contract guy.

If he puts up stats like last year he is a max contract guy. He is talented enough for a max as well but he isnt a franchise player, more of the ultimate complimantery type player.

Kind of a non story, IMO. The media keeps on reporting these as if it means the guy wants to leave, when really, it doesn't make sense for him to sign a 3 year extension over a 5 year deal he'd otherwise be eligible for.

Actually smith wants to leave and he has for years. He was pissed when the Hawks matched the Grizzlies offer sheet and has had a standing trade request from them since then. Unless they offer him a five year max he is probably leaving and i wouldnt be surprised if he left anyways.

Would he ever consider coming here, though? That is the 50 million dollar question.

That is certainly a big incentive. Plus if Lillard and ML actually pan out this will be a good looking team to join.

I think it's a GENIUS pickup. If we can bring him over that would adjust our starting Lineup and gives us our backup SG.

He brings Defense, rebounding, scoring, and Athleticism. He needs to stop shooting 3's and jumpers though.
These are NOT max dollar numbers here folks.

I would really like to spend the money on someone who can create his own shot. Preferably a SG.
I wouldn't hate getting Josh Smith, but if we are going to add another big contract, I think the dude needs to be an above average jump shooter.

how does signing josh smith give us a backup SG?

By pushing Batum down to the 2, allowing Matthews to be a backup rather than a starter.

I think the Blazers plan A is to offer James Harden a max contract. Not picking up the option on Babbit, Smith and Williams will free up just about enough to do it. And that is really the most sensible plan, rather than to get a PF/SF tweener when we already have Batum and LA.

Acquiring Harden would make us one of the better teams in the West.

I like Harden, but I'm not sure he's worth a Max Deal...

One thing is for sure, after watching Lillard play I don't want another ball-dominant guard in the backcourt with him. He needs the ball in his hands to be effective, ala Chris Paul or Deron Williams. Ideally we could sign a shooting guard that is a lights out shooter. That would be the perfect fit next to Lillard.

I'm wishy washy on Harden. I'd love him here but I also go back and forth on whether he is worth the money and if he can come in as a big FA hiring and then take a backseat to Lillard and LA. I like the idea of Josh Smith but i'm worried that he is going to have a very sudden drop off when his athleticism starts to decline.

Good point.

Example - Gerald Wallace

Saving a million or 2 would be awesome if we could still pick up a guy like that.

he plays a position we really don't need filled as we have LMA and Nic, especially at the price he will command. IMO if spend money on FA or a lopsided trade SG is where we need to go

Why are you guys comparing Harden to Gerald Wallace? Harden just turned 23. He'll be 24 next summer so a 5 year max contract wouldn't even bring him to 30.

Good Lord.

How about seeing how Smith does this year without Joe Johnson?

Smith was terrible against Boston last year.

Is this the new 12 year-old fan Blazer forum?

As much as I think Harden is a dead end, he at least makes sense over giving Josh Smith a max contract.
