Looks like that "plea bargain" in the Willie Lyles case we'd been anticipating won't happen after all.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, the go-to guy on such things, reports that Oregon and the NCAA have reached in impasse in the summary disposition process. The Ducks will have their case heard by an infractions committee, presumably next spring.

The sources said the committee ultimately did not accept Oregon's presentment, disagreeing with "various aspects" of both the infractions the school believed occurred, and the sanctions the school deemed appropriate. That impasse has made a full-blown hearing necessary. Had Oregon's request for summary disposition been successful, the school could have avoided a hearing in which individuals such as head football coach Chip Kelly could be made to appear and take questions.
Essentially, this means the case is going to a trial, rather than being plea bargained. The resolution won't be as amicable as once thought.

I've reached out to UO officials for comment on this report.

Such bullshit. $EC can buy championships, but the NCAA is on our balls for Willie Lyles?

SEC teams used this guy too... for the same freaken reason.

You didn't see them cutting a $25K check to Willie either.

No, they only cut $6k and $5k checks. Or, in Tennessee's case under Kiffin, a $1500 personal check from Willie Mack Garza, UT ass't coach, to Lyles after he brought Lache Seastrunk and his mom on an "unofficial" trip to Tennessee when Lache was a JR in HS.

Pryor getting in trouble for selling his own autographs was so stupid.

I don't see them under investigation.

Tennessee is under investigation because one of Lane Kiffin's assistants cut a personal check to Lyles after he flew Lache and Lache's mom to Knoxville in 2009.

His dad, not him.

It's odd that USC was given the ban hammer because Reggie Bush's parents got money, and the NCAA never even interviewed Reggie to find out if his parents knew about it.

Yet Cam's dad clearly got money, but because Cam said he didn't know about it, he was cleared in literally one day by the NCAA.

The USC sanctions included oj mayo and items he received too. Bush did receive some of the extra benefits

Bush received none of the extra benefits, at least according to the NCAA's findings.

What is interesting is that Bruce Pearl got fired from the U of Tennessee for violations, while at the same time Willie Mack Garza was paying Lyles directly to bring Lache Seastrunk for a visit to Knoxville, yet the NCAA doesn't seem too interested in that case. Seems like an obvious case of 'lack of institutional control' to me, doesn't it?

In Tennessee's case, it is provable that the basketball program and the football program were both flagrantly in violation of NCAA rules.

No one ever proved that Cam's dad got paid. That doesn't mean that he didn't, only that it was never proven.

Sorta true.

The circumstantial evidence was overwhelming. But, no, no check stub was ever produced.

If the SEC doesn't win a championship this year, expect "claims" to go against SEC teams

Let's just hope that our recruits don't see this as a huge red flag and start getting cold feet. I'm also interested to see "if punished" how quickley Chip bolts for the pros upon the news in the spring.

If we're going to trial we'll be slapped with something I think we all know that! What's sort of funny is Oregon vs Tennessee next year, they should call it Willie Lyles night at Autzen!

So between this and the Kyle Long petition being denied, does this mean the NCAA has it in for us?

I don't think so.

Long wanted to gain back the year he lost due to a drug suspension and called it a medical hardship. That'll fly for getting social security, food stanps, extended unemployment benefits... but not with the NCAA for another year of football.

As to the Wiles thing, we got caught. Granted, the other schools who did this aren't being hauled before the bench, but that doesn't change the fact we're guilty.

It will be interesting to see if the legal team for the Ducks mandate all of Slick Willie's financial records be open to the investigation committee, on and about all recruiting services to establish payment methods to cross reference other schools to establish an infraction pattern. This could be a big mess for a few more SEC schools that are hoping Willie's records of "recruiting" aren't made public! It's one thing to take down Oregon and Tennesse, quite another to take down LSU, BAMA and Texas A&M, all schools Slick Willie has given "services" to for years with similar payment styles I'm betting!

I don't think the NCAA wants to punish 4 of the top 10 schools in the BCS. That could cause a huge financial loss and one college football can't afford right now, and certainly one the TV networks would be jump up and down about! This onion might not want to be unpealed any further!

I think, since we cooperated on the Lyles thing, we'll only get like, a year long scholarship. It wasn't like we gave Reggie Bush, a Hesiman Trophy, a car like USC. We didn't have that major stand outs, USC did and they have a major brand for them

The thinking by UO's attorney is that the NCAA has had enough with middlemen and recruiting and wants it stopped. Accordingly they feel a hearing is in order so as to make it all more public. That doesn't necessarily mean harsher sanctions (but probably does), but rather they want the rank & file to understand this is a serious situation. UO's AD letter to the alumni:

Dear Friends of Oregon,

Thank you for your continued support of the University of Oregon and the athletics program. I want to provide you an update on the NCAA inquiry to clarify recent media reports. As we have shared in previous communications, we have tremendous respect for the NCAA and member institutions’ role in monitoring intercollegiate athletics and, as such, committed our full cooperation with the NCAA enforcement staff during the process.

This matter was taken very seriously and handled accordingly. We have worked cooperatively with the NCAA enforcement staff to determine the facts related to the program and be held accountable in a fair way. The institution and the NCAA enforcement staff were able to agree on the substantive findings of the inquiry which resulted in the matter being presented for summary disposition. The agreed-upon findings and self-imposed penalties were submitted to the NCAA Committee on Infractions, which requested to discuss the matter in person.

We appreciate your patience in awaiting the details of the matter and as always, your loyal support of the University and the athletics program. It is important to note the review is ongoing until the NCAA Committee on Infractions issues its final report and the integrity of the process and our continued full cooperation with the NCAA prohibits us from publicly discussing the specifics of this matter.

Thank you.

I'm not saying thats the case, but it's worth noting that the head of the NCAA is a Fusky

Don't forget Ed Ray is Chairman of the NCAA Executive Committee.
