Evan McMullin, the former chief policy director for Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives, will offer discontented members of his party an option this November by launching an independent, conservative bid for president.

“In a year where Americans have lost faith in the candidates of both major parties, it’s time for a generation of new leadership to step up," McMullin said in a statement to ABC News. "It’s never too late to do the right thing, and America deserves much better than either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton can offer us. I humbly offer myself as a leader who can give millions of disaffected Americans a conservative choice for President.”

Citing “multiple sources” in a series of posts to Twitter, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough was the first to announce McMullin's bid. He said McMullin will kick off his campaign Monday and has “the backing of key $$ contributors in the Republican Party.”

Can we start calling him McMuffin? I hear he's going to be a scrappy candidate.

So, don't we already have a Libertarian ticket to address the frustrated-and-ready-to-choose-a-futile-candidate crowd like me? How many choices do we need to throw away our votes?

And, where's some Democrat who's willing to run an independent campaign to try to stop the corrupt Clinton machine? Shall we hold our breaths?

McMuffin is a GOP insider, I think this is more about building relationships with big money donors for a real run in 4 years while getting a little name recognition going.

Probably, that and trying to derail the Trump Express in order to save the world from evil darkness. Well, leave it in the hands of a lesser form of evil darkness.

Hmm, this guy currently works for the House GOP? I wonder if this is Ryan's way of sticking his finger in Trump's eye.

This is the guy the GOP elite who hate Trump are going to put in the game, sort of Jeb Bush's replacement in case of emergency....ex CIA...connected. If he gets to be in the debates and Gary Johnson doesn't, it'll piss me off.

If anything it could help Clinton by splitting Republican vote in some of the Western states.
Frankly, he's another boring old white dude with no real program, just "I'm not Trump or Clinton". What is his platform?

He's 40 but probably boring

Says he worked for CIA but he looks more KGB to me.

The polls already reflect a split of republican voters.

If anything, it gives #neverTrump republicans an alternative to Hiliar.

I don't see the point, frankly. If he's not on the ballot, people have to write him in. I don't think that's ever worked. I don't know if he can get on the ballot in any state at this point.

4. Making it on the ballot is pretty unrealistic.

The deadline to get on the ballot has already passed in 26 states that have a total of 294 electoral votes. Translation: the most electoral votes any new candidate could get are 244, short of the 270 needed to win the presidency.

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough said Monday on "Morning Joe" that unnamed sources told him that the independent candidacy could be "well-funded" and attempt to get on the ballot in between 20 and 30 states.

"They still believe they can go past the 270 threshold, so this person will be able to be in debates," Scarborough said. "But certainly it is aimed, I believe — and this is just my conjecture, based upon the people I've been speaking with — that this has more to do with stopping Donald Trump than actually electing the president."

George Washington was the only independent to pull it off.....Ross Perot has second place in history with his 19% Right now Johnson has 7% and Stein has about half that for the Green Party

As write in. I don't know if that's worked for any office in the USA. Possibly minor offices.

Lisa Murkowski in Alaska won a senate seat as a write in for the he 2010 election, and Strom Thurmond won a senate seat in the 50s as a write in.

George Wallace won a decent number of electoral votes in 1968. Perot won zero.
