I ate at Departures over thanksgiving, not really a fan of it. As someone who eats a lot of asian food, the asian food geared towards white people palates isn't really my thing. Hope he gets to open up a more adventerous restaurant in Portland.

Taste of Szechuan in Beaverton (on Cornell where the Marie Calendars used to be) is really good. Last time we went we were just about the only white people there.

Yeah, I'll check it. My family doesn't really like spicy-ish foods. We went to China-Town restaurant on Murray Road/Walker. It was dim sum and some seafood, it was ok, a little overpriced I think.

Best place in town was Spicy World, but they closed down. I had a co-worker from China who knew all the great places; she introduced me to both places.

Have you been to Ocean City in SE for dim sum? That place is bomb, and always filled with Chinese people, so you know it's legit.

Nope. My fam doesn't really like goign on the Eastside (except for Thien Hong). Also, the Dim Sum in LA is really solid so I don't really try to seek it out when I'm there, only when family forces me to come along, family meetups tend to be Chinese and at lunch, DimSum and my whole fam lives in Beaverton/Hillsboro/NW Portland.

I went to Fogo de Chao last week. It was pretty good.

How's the food at Punch Bowl Social? I went there for drinks, nice spot, but I don't think it can survive, shit was mad empty.

Yeah, its pretty good but overpriced for the quality of meats. I've been to other chains for this, and they were way better. At least the one in LA, they kind of "mailed it in".

Y'all missing out. Ocean City is legit. It's one of the best places in the Portland Metro Area for dim sum. I often see some of the more well-known Portland Chinese figures at Ocean City (some are friends, who turned me on to Ocean City).

Yeah, but the best place in Portland is probably an average place in LA. If its that good, there's probably a 40 minute wait at peak times, maybe more.

Ocean city is legit. Almost every time I'm in town I get dim sum there with my mom fam (Chinese). My sister had her wedding reception there a couple years ago. That was a feast.

Nongs is also one of my go to stops when I'm in town. When she started bottling her sauce I had her ship a case down to San Diego.

I'll be hitting up both of these spots next weekend!

There's often a long wait there. My parents go enough now, my parents are moved to the front of the line. They've seen me enough with my parents (and with our Chinese friends) that we often get the same treatment.

Yeah, Ocean City pretty good for events. How big was your sister's wedding reception? I've been to a couple events there, but a wedding reception sounds big (though I suppose it could have been smaller).

Nong's is good too. Only been like twice, but it was pretty bomb.

There were probably 150 or maybe 200 at the reception. It was pretty packed with a smallish dance floor.

They have one out in Vancouver too. Went for my dads birthday. Impressive for a chain restaurant. Reminded me of Wong's King and Ocean City.

Passing through LA in two weeks.... gotta make my routine trip to The Hat for Hot Pastrami, a mountain of chili cheese fries, and Orange Bang. Then on to Pacific Beach. El-P, you spend much time in San Diego? We go once per year, but are always tied up so we don't eat out down there much. Any recommendations?

I'm only in LA for one night. And The Hat is where I always must go. If I find additional time, I will try to check out the Oinkster (the others don't look legit). What is "Oinksterade"? Is that lemonade or some rad concoction? I mostly go to The Hat because they have such tender, tasty pastrami. And while I don't like soda, their orange soda (Orange Bang) is off the hook.

Langer's is consistently noted (and debated) as the being the best pastrami in the country. Really hood area though.

Not sure, I don't go there that often as its not super close. The thing to get at the Oinkster is the Ube Milkshake.

I don't spend a whole lot of time in San Diego. I do like to search for Baja Fish Tacos. I remember going to Roberto's.

Also, I like this spot called JV's in Mission Valley. http://www.yelp.com/biz/jvs-mexican-food-san-diego
Its more of a divey spot though.

I've been to Roberto's a couple times if its the same place that's on Mission Beach right by the boardwalk across the street from the fair type place with the rides and shit.

Good burrito if I remember right.

I think its one of these places where there are a ton of places named "Roberto's", not all of them the same. Kind of like "Alberto's" in LA or "Ray's Pizza" in NY.

Oh yeah, the other thing you need to get in San Diego are Carne Asada Fries. Woo woo.

Let us not forget about our local friendly McDonalds!

Roberto's is a local taco chain.

I personally really like the one in Leucedia - but the others I sampled were all good.
