RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW: DEFENDING REX HOSPITAL OPEN CHAMPION KYLE THOMPSON PLAYS WITH A PURPOSE

Defending and three-time Rex Hospital Open champion Kyle Thompson said things happen for a reason.

He wasn’t just sound-biting a cliché that many espouse after a life-changing event takes place, but one that he believes has guided why he continues to play on the Web.com Tour, still working to earn a PGA Tour card as well as having a platform with which to influence others’ lives.

“You never know when it’s going to be your week,” Thompson said.

“Who would’ve ever thought I’d win this tournament last year – probably the longest shot in the field.”

Fritsch withdraws from Rex Hospital Open

Brad Fritsch, the second-leading money winner this year on the Web.com Tour, withdrew Friday from the Rex Hospital Open.

Fritsch, who played college golf at Campbell and lives in Holly Springs, tweeted Friday that he was “bummed” but suffered from a “very painful” left foot.

Two share lead in Rex Hospital Open

Byron Smith has no qualms about being in contention or the pressure of tournament golf.

But the Zika virus? He wants no part of that.

Smith, the 2014 Rex Hospital Open champion, is back at TPC Wakefield Plantation hoping to win for a second time. He also has some work to do, as J.J. Spaun and Brady Schnell share a one-shot lead at 9-under 133 after two rounds of the Web.com Tour event.

Spaun, the first-round leader with a 63, had a less-than-flashy 70 Friday and Schnell a 67. Tied at 8-under 134 were Chase Marinell, Jason Millard, Chris Wilson, Dominic Bozzelli and Julian Etulain.

Schnell secures lead at Rex Hospital Open

Brady Schnell entered the Rex Hospital Open in need of a good week following four missed cuts in his first six starts of the year. After opening with rounds of 66-67—133 (9-under) to grab a share of the 36-hole lead, the former Nebraska golfer carded a third-round 67 on Saturday to reach 13-under, good for a one-shot lead heading into the event’s fourth and final round. Schnell will play in the final twosome on Sunday for the first time in his Web.com Tour career.

Trey Mullinax wins Rex Hospital Open for first Web.com title

Trey Mullinax won the Rex Hospital Open on Sunday for his first Web.com Tour title, shooting a 3-under 68 for a two-stroke victory.

"It's just unreal. I can't believe it," Mullinax said.

The 23-year-old former Alabama player finished at 14-under 270 at TPC Wakefield Plantation. He earned $117,000 to jump from 33rd to fourth on the money list with $154,486. The top 25 at the end of the regular season will earn PGA Tour cards for next season.
