RIP Captain Munson

Today is the 34 anniversary of Thurman's death. "Don't judge me by my style, but by my results" The results are in Thurman, and you are missed.

Thurman is one of my all time Yankee Favorites; head honcho gutsy member of my all time favorite '78 Yankees Ball Club. A Captain who led by example and had no problem grabbing slackers by the stacking swivel and setting them straight. I am extremely fortunate to have seen him play.

That was one of those days that you just remember. I remember watching Grimsby/Beutel leading off the story on the 6:00 news that night, and it was stunned disbelief.

He was a fun player to watch - the heart and soul of a team that went to 3 straight WS, and won the last 2. Even when his health had started to break down in 78, and it was clear that he lost a lot of his power - who rescues the Yankees with a 2-run HR in the 8th inning of Game 4 of the ALCS to prevent them going down 2-1 in the series?

There were many gutsy players on that '78 Yankee team of which any of them would have had a long chat with Cano before Thurman would have taken him for a woodshed whacking.

Hammer, he was born to be a player and a leader. Uniform always dirty, his own style with everything he did on the field... He was special, He and Bobby Murcer at that time was good as it got.

Dispite having the weakest hitting left side of an infield in Yankee history Gene Michael (214) & Jerry Kenny (193) The Yankees managed to return to respectability after 5 down years winning 93 games. Due in part to the two new young kids name Murcer & Munson. Unfortunately they finished 15 games behind the Orioles.
