Im not finding much clarity on how it would impact me if I place a hold.

I need to maintain about 33-35 mill in cap space to sign a max to who i'm targeting, but would like to use middleton as some sort of leverage if I have that ability to do so, meaning, If I cant nail the targeted max player, Am I then able to use Middleton in some sort of sign and trade thing or straight up trade?

A sign and trade wouldn't be your decision. If Middleton chose to sign with a team that had no cap space you'd be contacted about a possible trade but he's unrestricted so he could just sign anywhere.

His cap hold is $19.5 million. If you need the money you just renounce the cap hold.
