I would love to add Bazemore to this team. You could swap him for Turner. If you'd move Baze to SG and CJ to sixth man and playmaker for second unit, it could make sense. Playing CJ and Hood together would leave little defense, though.

I believe he was refering to in-season trades. IIRC, 6 of the guys you list were off-season acquisitions vs 3 in-season.
 
I think Hood's arrival may spell the end of CJ's tenure here. Hood can play the 2 or the 3 so if we traded CJ, Hood could step in and start at the 2 for us. I think Neil will acquire an all star 4 with CJ, Zach and picks. It could be Anthony Davis or Blake Griffin or someone less obvious. A lineup of Dame, Hood, Aminu, Davis and Nurk would be potent offensively and hard to score on.
 
Perfect trade. I love Rodni Hood and we didn't give up much and even allowed Baldwin and Stauskas a better chance.

I like Hood as a CJ replacement for sure.

My grandson is the opposite as he's predominately left handed with throwing, shooting etc., but for some reason he would hit right handed. He quit baseball when he was around 12 and concentrated on football and basketball, otherwise I would have worked with him on hitting left handed as I am sure he would have picked it up easily.

There's only one way to value a role player like this in my book: How likely is he to help us get out of the first round?

In 28 playoff games over the last 2 seasons, he's shot 23% from three point range. On 74 attempts, over those two years, he hit 17. Playoff PER of 6.5 on 530 minutes played, half of of those minutes feeding off LeBron and the other half feeding off one of the best-coached teams in the league.

Am I the only one who remembered our first round flame out last year when we couldn't get anybody to score the damned ball? CJ and Chief were the only guys who shot over 33% from three, and Hood does nothing to solve that problem.

Hood is a terrible fools gold pickup. He'll do just enough over the remaining games of this season so that we get to rely on him, and then we are probably fucked once more. Hopefully Curry carries the load, but I want more than that in a trade.

Jake Layman has no playoff experience, but I have a feeling Stotts will prefer Hood's bad experience to Jake's non-experience, and Hood wastes valuable minutes that could be better spent.

We didn't give up anything for Hood, so yeah, I get that people are excited to upgrade Stauskas. I just have this bad feeling that it's subtraction by addition. Hood will do just enough in the regular season to fuck up our playoffs.

530 playoff minutes have proven that the guy chokes under the big games. We already have enough of those kind of role players.

Sure, he could turn it around, but do you really think that's a better bet than just tightening the bench rotation to Curry/Layman/Collins for the playoffs?

This whole post is a stretch. Playoffs is a super small sample size. Nobody looks at Aminu as being a 40%+ 3pt shooter going into the playoffs...

Last year Hood was adjusting to playing with LeBron (which is difficult) and didnt have any spot of a consistent role.

The year before he struggled. But Im not going to make the false assumption that his first playoffs as a 24 year old and him adjusting to a very tough situation in Cleveland means hes always going to underachieve in the playoffs...

The playoffs is a small sample size because if you fuck up it's over quickly for you (because you are either benched by the coach or your team loses quickly).

But guys who choke in the playoffs under pressure have a tendency to continue doing that. A role player like Hood will never get a large sample size, so he'd better perform well in the playoffs in limited minutes or somebody else will for him.

Aminu averages 43% in the playoffs on threes for his career (766 minutes, 24 games), so yeah, it's not shocking that he shot 41%. Aminu is the exact opposite of Hood. He had a mediocre 35% average during the regular season and pulled himself out of it. Aminu, btw, is only 2 years older than Hood, so a lot of what Chief did was when he was Hood's age.

530 minutes is a significant amount of time to get a feel for what a guy can do. We gave up on Stauskas after 670 regular season minutes.

We gave up on Stauskas based on who he's been over thousands of minutes into his career. He wasnt a rookie...

How many players do you know who played around 530 minutes in their rookie season or their first couple seasons and then turned it on afterwards? Theres many. Our own Jake Layman, for example.

Hood is in his 5th year, and his 4th team. The last two teams that relied on him for the playoffs gave up on him. He found himself on a team that had no hope of making the playoffs, and those guys realized he was just good enough to fuck things up too. Which is also why I don't want him. Until he proves otherwise (on somebody else's team) I've seen enough to know I don't want him on mine once the playoffs start. There are the Robert Horry/Aminu role player types who don't seem bothered by playoff pressure. There's nothing in Hood's background that makes me think he's in that group.

We're too far into the season to be doing this. It has a very Detlef Shrempf-y kind of vibe to me. Detlef is obviously a much higher caliber of player--but the situation is kind of similar. I loved that acquisition at the time--it looked great on paper--but you look back and think, man, we should've just ran with our guys. A guy like Hood is going to shake things up, and not in ways I want.

All players have flaws, especially those who don't have a bad contract, but can still be obtained for a pair of 2nd rounders. It's certainly not a risk-free move, and your pointing to his playoff stats is definitely a concern. However,
1) This was a very low-risk move
2) Shooters tend to thrive in Stotts system.
3) You can't ruin the playoff chances of a team that was swept as the 3rd seed....

It's actually his 3rd team. I also think this is a precursor move. I always really like his upsides and I feel like our staff can really develop him into a really good player.

In 11 games vs POR, he has averaged: 14 pts, 3 rebs, 2.5 asts on 41% FG, 27% from 3 in 25 mpg. That's about a decent bench player. Shooting is terrible.

Portland, where they play defense that makes even the most mediocre players less mediocre!
 
From a pieces out to pieces in standpoint this trade is very solid for Portland. It does have a feeling of a precursor trade based on 2 factors.

#1 Rotation. Rodney is a career starter who probably is a 6th man on good teams. Portland didnt trade for him to anchor the bench so he is going to be a rotational player... As a sg/sf he is going to be sharing time with CJ/Moe/ET/Jake. Someone is going to lose minutes and it isnt CJ or Evan.

#2 Timing. The deadline was still 4 days away at the time the deal happened. It feels like a bolstering before consolidation, and from timing it gives the Blazers time to construct another trade without potentially having to scramble to fill in blanks. It also opened a roster slot which can come in handy.
 
CJ has just become a lot more tradeable too, although I don't really see who we would trade him for - Blake?
 
Stotts says Hood will be worked into the rotation ASAP, but wouldn't comment on whose minutes would be reduced, just that "those minutes will come from somebody".

I hope that is the case. If it ends up just being Rodney Hood who ends up taking minutes from Jake, I will not be impressed with this in the least.
