Joe G said " Actually tonight I thought he threw the ball pretty good, we didn't make the plays behind him." Jesus Christ Joe, I've supported you since game one but some of your comments in defense of team fuck ups are getting out of hand. The man failed every time you ran him out there. I realize you have to be on "PR" watch, just say the man wasn't getting it done. The fans are not as stupid as the Yankee Brass Hats. Act like an NCO and start taking names and kicking ass instead of molly coddling as an Officer would do.
During the Playoffs & Series in '09 Giradi had big gonads, took charge and said this is how its going to be and we got a winner. In '09 Joe had good stock but the Brass has been less than successful at providing quality players. Joe has to send boys out to do a mans job, He can't come out and say yeah Rogers is a total dud thank God and Greyhound he's gone but he can say what we all know, the man is not meeting standards and we can live with that. We moan about running Drew and others out there but given the hand he's got I think he does well. It's the quote unquote "movers and shakers in the front office that are supposed to acquire the right type of personnel. Billy Martin would have taken Drew and Rogers out behind the woodshed!!!!!!!!
God bless Billy Martin. There was a mgr!
Getting more out of "less". He belongs in the HOF imo.
Martin played on 4 World Series winning teams, 250 something hitter who stepped it up during the World Series. That catch he made in the '53 World Series ranks right up with the very best. Martin improved Minnesota, Detroit, Texas, and Oakland Teams. Those '76 through '78 Yankee Teams were engineered by Game Paul, Steinbrenner fired him. Martin was the manager , Steinbrenner fired him. Had Steinbrenner lightened up a bit the Yankees may have had even more success. Billy also had the sack to deal with players who were slackers, Reggie still snivels about being yanked in that '77 game. I was in Germany when that game was played and that action made AFNE radio and TV headlines. I only got to see Martin one full year ('56) but I always respected him as a scrappy hardcore individual who wanted to win.
Tough as nails & a very good mgr but his numbers both as a mgr & especially a player are not HOF worthy. Again JMO.

Don't forget that Billy Martin served in the U.S. Army ( 10th Mountain Division ) causing him to miss the entire 1954 and most of the '55 as well.
I wouldn't have put Herzog in there either. I have no idea what the veterans committee looks at when making these decisions

Of the 10 modern day managers currently in the HOF 6 of them have won over 2000 games. Of the other 4
Tommy Lasorda 1,599 - 1,439 = .529 winning% won 4 pennants & 2 WS
Earl Weaver 1,480 - 1,060 = .583 the highest winning % of the 10. Won 4 pennants & 1 WS.
Dick Williams 1,571 - 1,451 = .520 winning %. Won 4 pennants & 2 WS
Whitey Herzog 1,281 - 1,125 = .532 winning %. Won 3 pennants & 1 WS
IF Martin were to get in he would do so with the least amount of victories 1,253 - 1,013 = .553 winning % with 2 pennants & 1 WS.
Like I said IMO Herzog doesn't belong & nor would Martin.
...don't know is he's a HOFer or not but as a manager, I seem to remember Martin making an impact on every team he coached. His player respected him.
Rick, I remember watching that game live on Saturday TV...and I recall Ellie getting in between Reggie and Billy. Reggie would have destroyed Martin...but you know Billy. he didn't care...and would gladly punch a locomotive if he had a mind to.
Those late 70's Yanx teams, the early 70's A's and others, were great teams that despite the fact that they didn't particularly like each other, they still managed to put their differences aside long enough to kick the shit out of their opponents.
