I used to put together AAU and rec teams. It almost always was players no one else wanted, players from horrible teams. But I would talk to them, see what they were like, explain how I saw them fitting into the team I was putting together and decided whether to put them on the team. Most of the time, we did really well, made it to the finals or semis. It's amazing what players can do if they know why they are there and their role on the team.
So while Basketball was my passion, I was on some very good select soccer teams, and had I pursued that my life wouldve probably been much different, anyways thats not the point. The point Id make is that in all sports one of the most important things that coaches / managers do is define roles for guys. From stars down to role players, Ive been on teams in both basketball and soccer where our coaches did a terrible job at defining our roles and even with good players we bad teams. On the flip side the best team I was ever on was a soccer team that won a bunch of tournaments in Portland and the northwest and while we had some good players I think the most important part of those teams was our coach did an amazing job at making sure we knew what our job was.

Now obviously amateur athletics is much different than NBA players, but its my opinion that the principles are similar. A good coach and GM identify guys that can play a role, and define that role, help a guy maximize his abilities in that role. Even Stars like Dame have a role, and have things they shouldnt do because its not their job.

Jackson is another wing who can't shoot and has gotten by in his basketball life because he's athletically gifted. I think that speaks to a poor work ethic more so than because he plays for Phoenix. I just don't think he's the type of player Olshey would bring in.
Again, it all depends on the acquisition cost, but that sounds a lot like moe harkless.

In the case of RHJ, who would be telling the reporter about their interest? The team can't. If the agent does it may lead to a bad relationship with the GM.

To me, that tweet was just a guess disguised as actual information. Therefore I don't believe he knows for sure.

This thread from the Blazers official forum. :)

I'd honestly love a guy like RHJ, defensive stopper to help push the tempo of the second unit or situationally in the first to slow down those players that always torch us.

Hey, out of curiousity what club did you play for and what years. My son and youngest daughter both played club soccer.

I think the Suns could be in the running for Conley.

Warren, Jackson, Okobo, and 6 for Conley and Brooks.

I am guessing too old for their liking. Otherwise you would think they would be all over it, already. They have been dying for a PG for over a year.

Ha, thats a heck of a question. Portland City United Soccer or something like that. At one point one of the coaches took a bunch of kids and made a team called the Raptors, and had us out doing a bunch of tournaments.
I played from 92-02. Wasnt until 99 or so that I was on teams that went and played in tournaments. Honestly I liked soccer, but I was head over heels in love with Basketball.

Conley is only 30, he has had his bout with injuries but he can still give the suns 3-4 years and with Booker they need to give him a decent running mate.

It's interesting how we go from one sport to another. I went from basketball to football and eventually to long distance running & track. I learned to love running, but that's not the reason why I joined those teams (long distance running & track). It was all about the girls at the time in high school. :blazerwookie:

I have loved basketball for as long as I can remember, my parents have stories of me at like 1 1/2 years old running around saying basketball and pretending to shoot.

I played baseball for a couple years and hated it, then my parents got me into soccer and I played both Soccer and Basketball after that, if my parents wouldve let me play Basketball 24/7 year round and skip soccer I would have.

They wanted me to play two sports.

So he's still immature but you're hoping he matured?

Are you just ignoring the beat down he tried to give a woman at Kansas? Luckily she had that car to hide in.
Not ignoring, these are definitely things to consider, but also part of why his value might be minimized. But we've seen turnarounds before, and wouldn't you agree that Dame's leadership means something? Jackson has had two GMs and two coaches in his two seasons. He has had 0 veteran leadership. he COULD be a good candidate to turn his life around.

As I said, his on court production means more to me, and even that has been largely hit or miss. But there was a reason he was a consensus top 5 pick in that loaded 2017 draft -- this isn't an Anthony Bennett type who just shot up the ranks randomly.

Given our strong leadership and history of player development, we absolutely need to atleast kick the tires on this guy.

Cool. My son started off at PCU his first 2 years of playing (u12 and u13) then went over to FC Portland as they were pretty much just starting up the younger age level teams. When he made the switch he also played u13 over again as he was playing up at PCU. He graduated from high school in 2002 so he might be around the same age as you. I was similar as you in basketball but it was baseball as soccer wasn't a competitive sports back when I was playing. I loved basketball and it was my first choice, but a 6' basketball player isn't in high demand so I concentrated on baseball and it worked out pretty good for me.

What was strange with the Suns is that they had Bledsoe for several years and was never able to make it work for them.

Bledsoe was good for them for a while, but blowing out his knee really sidetracked him. He runs hot and cold if you watch the Bucks. He was a big reason the Bucks faltered against the Raps in the playoffs.

There is a huge difference between someone who is unhappy with their role so they pout and become a problem like Nurk and someone who tries to beat a woman.

I want players that have a chip on their shoulder and an edge that results in them working harder at actually being better at basketball like Dame being overlooked his whole life. I can't stand players that have an attitude because they have character and maturity issues. Those type of players usually feel entitled and don't put in the work necessary to be a star in the NBA.

A guy like Jackson is still talented enough to stick around the NBA for a long time but I'd rather have Harkless and Layman on the wing than him.

Damon is supporting his Arizona guy. Not sure how tough he is, as he got passed over in the Nets rotation in the playoffs this year.

True, but he is better than what they have had since Steve Nash and better than what they have now.

sounds like an immature kid

these aren't "character issues"

No, sounds like a dumbass. Every black person (yes every one of us) has been taught how to act around police officers.

Are you just ignoring the beat down he tried to give a woman at Kansas? Luckily she had that car to hide in.

But HJ... That was so 2 years ago...

Affidavit: Josh Jackson threatened to 'beat' women's player
LAWRENCE, Kan. -- One day before top-seeded Kansas opens NCAA tournament play, court officials released an affidavit that says freshman star Josh Jackson threatened to "beat" a women's basketball player during a confrontation in December.

Douglas County District Court officials released the affidavit to The Lawrence Journal-World detailing statements from McKenzie Calvert and two other Kansas women's basketball players who witnessed the argument Dec. 9 outside The Yacht Club in Lawrence. The affidavit was filed by police to justify a court summons Jackson was served March 7; he is charged with misdemeanor criminal damage.

Coach Bill Self suspended Jackson for the quarterfinal game in the Big 12 tournament that Kansas lost to TCU as punishment for an accumulation of embarrassing incidents. Self has been adamant that Jackson will play Friday when the top-seeded Jayhawks face UC Davis in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Self was asked about finding a balance with his players between acknowledging the off-court issues while not letting them be a disruption.

"First thing you do, you accept responsibility for what's transpired. You can't run from it. If it happened, it happened," he said. "But then, you know, how do you handle it from that point, I think, is a lot of times as important as what actually transpired. And our guys have rallied around this. Our guys have rallied around Josh."

The coach also said he believes Jackson is focused.

"He's a tough-minded individual," Self said Thursday in Tulsa. "I think he's focused. And certainly his role or playing time or what not, whatever, will only be dictated by what happens between the lines. It won't be dictated by anything else. And I think he's ready to go."

The incident in December began inside the bar when Calvert threw a drink at her ex-boyfriend, Lagerald Vick, another Kansas player. She said she was upset because Vick attended the party with his new girlfriend.

Calver told police Jackson followed her to her car and "was yelling for her to get out of the car and that he would beat her ass," the affidavit says. Jackson is scheduled to appear in court April 12. His attorney did not return a call Thursday from The Associated Press.

The affidavit said the bumper, grille, fender, windshield, left tail lamp assembly and driver's side front door were all damaged, with a total repair cost of about $3,150. Witnesses reported Jackson only damaging the door and tail light, with an estimated damage of $1,127, and District Attorney Charles Branson said Jackson was not charged with felony criminal damage because it couldn't be proved that the player caused all the damage.

Jackson apologized in a statement shortly after he was arrested and "offered to pay for any damage that I directly caused."

Women's basketball player Caelynn Manning-Allen told police she tried to restrain Jackson by grabbing his arms and he kicked Calvert's car before she was able to get him away from the vehicle. Another women's player, Eboni Watts, said she witnessed Jackson kick Calvert's driver's door twice and kick the tail light.

According to the affidavit, Self joined Jackson at McCarthy Hall, where the men's basketball team lives, as he was interviewed by police about 5:45 a.m. the day of the confrontation.

The Jayhawks have been dogged by a number of off-the-court problems this season. The most serious is an alleged sexual assault at McCarthy Hall. No suspects have been identified in connection with the incident the night of Dec. 17, though five players are listed as witnesses.

Forward Carlton Bragg also was charged with possession in a drug case and was briefly suspended before being granted diversion. Vick was also accused of hitting a female student two years ago, but the school investigated and recommended school probation.

And hours after the Jayhawks wrapped up the Big 12 regular-season title, junior guard Devonte Graham was arrested for failing to appear in court. Graham had been ticketed for driving with expired license plates, and said that the car belonged to an ex-teammate and he thought the ticket had been paid.

Hollis will come cheap for sure. Hard to play in crunch time when you can't shoot. But I would not mind having him on our bench. He would need to play with 4 other guy players who are really good shooters though.

We already have a ton of player who fit that description. We don't need more

I understand what you are saying if we keep Aminu, ET, and Harkless. But he is a better wing defender than any of those
