Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

Are you kidding?? I definitely see a point in writing about it. I had no idea that Roy stood in the tunnel during the national anthem. What the hell is that all about??

His explanation sounds fishy to me, as well. It sounds like he DOES have a political motivation, and he's just afraid to voice it. I salute Canzano for reporting on this. Count me as one of the people disturbed by this revelation.

Because I don't have any validation of implied reasons for the "act" or description there of, I find the article of little consequence to me.

Roy can do that if he wants to I guess. Does it violate some rule of the league or law. The writer of the article seems to have his sensibilities offended however. So am I to accept his standards as my rule of my life. I think not, nor does Roy.

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

Was Roy really born in the USA? How do we know that he wasn't born in Kenya? Has anyone actually seen Roy's birth certificate?

Maybe that's the real reason why Roy won't play for Team USA...

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

Make this thread a sticky, or bump it every half hour!

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

It's Roy's right to take part or take leave during the national anthem, it's just kind of disappointing honestly.

With that said... JC is just trying to stir shit up.

Alright guys, Roy trusted me with his secret, but I think it must be said. Roy is not a native son of the USA. He comes from a planet under a red sun to his father Jor-El.

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

Jor-El Roy?

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

like most have said.... who gives a flying fuck he can do whatever he wants! HES GOT 80 MILLION DOLLARS! and the right to do what he wants too i guess.....

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

Everyone who posted a link to Canzano's previous article in the comment section of his current article just had their post removed. Too funny!

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

Canzano is a communist, that is why!

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

Roy is unpatriotic trash...Send his punk ass to Guantanamo

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

Turning down Team USA, now this

Roy is a communist!

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

Wowza... I just accidentally clicked on that when I was at O-live...reading other news...

Then I come here and there's 11 pages on it. This was just on Rip City live a day or 2 ago (the really crappy pre-pre game show). They did a little "behind the scenes" thing about how he uses the couple of solitary moments to get his thoughts together before the game.

Then it gets all blown out of proportion by that asshole Canzano. I'm so glad I don't intentionally read his stuff. I'm almost always in the car @ 3pm, and at that exact moment my radio goes from Wheels to Isaac and Big Tool...the best way to deal with someone that starved for attention is to ignore them...don't feed the troll!

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

So you patriotic hippies are gonna give him a pass because he is a good basketball player huh?....okay, Ill remember that :devilwink:

Hell, I supported Abdul-Rauf when he didn't even want to stand for the anthem, figured it was his choice...my folks also told me not to say the Pledge of Allegiance...so I'm not necessarily the best representative sample...However, I do stand and remove my hat during the anthem at games as a show of respect to the people that DO have strong feelings on the issue.

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

It's funny... this kind of topic is usually in the OT section.

With that said, the way I look at the national anthem is as a few moments of respect for those who have died to preserve the rights and liberties that we enjoy today. I think the pledge of allegiance and national anthem are taken for granted, and somewhat trivialized. A lot of people have died for this country. For those of you who choose not to stand, cover your heart, or sing along, you were given that right by those very same people who lost their lives. If you choose not to partake, at least respect what it stands for.

Now, with regards to Roy, I'm not sure why exactly he chooses that time to gather himself. I imagine this would be one of those things that Brandon could explain very easily in person, but now that it's blown out of proportion, we will probably never know how he truly feels about the subject. He'll be labeled unpatriotic or anti-American because he sits it out, and that's sad, but I am a little disappointed because I know kids idolize Roy, and I hope those kids understand the gravity of the song and what it represents.

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

Really, it's none of your fucking business. The man has a right. It doesn't affect you or harm you in any way. Get a grip.
It's none of my business? Roy has a right to do what he's doing in the tunnel, but I don't have a right to protest it or talk about it? What a strange idea of "freedom" you have.

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

Wow shooter did you really jsut go there?

many of us don't see the world as black and white and black people have "their" people and white people have their people.

We are all Americans. I'm not black, but you know what, I consider Obama "my people" and every person on the supreme court "my people" . . . because they are all Americans.

His people . . . do you really see americans as black or white and they are your people if they match your skin tone?

Well said. His people, are you freaking kidding me? That's an incredibly racist and ignorant thing to say, not to mention your entire paragraph oozes with much of the same.

Keep your ignorant views out of this forum please.

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

Not WHAT WOULD BRANDON DO?

WHAT WOULD GLEN BECK DO?

Glen Beck... oh my don't get me started. What a Douche.

I'm stuck on a cruiseship that ONLY shows Fox News as it's "News station"

If there isn't some kind of law being broken by that I think there needs to be one passed. ASAP.

A private guy who should be in the public's eye
by John Canzano, The Oregonian
Wednesday January 28, 2009, 11:34 PM

First, though, you must know about Roy and the tunnel.

Because there are few private moments in Roy's life anymore. He is a father of two young children. He is the best player on one of the league's best young teams. And while he says he plays because he loves basketball, there are people pulling at him constantly -- for autographs, for quotes, for appearances -- which is why he secretly enjoyed when Greg Oden arrived a year ago, pulling some of the media temporarily to the other side of the locker room.

So yeah. Roy retreats to the tunnel before games. He bows his head. He listens to the anthem. And Roy said: "I say a little prayer and have a little time to myself."

He's always there for his team when the lights go up, isn't he?

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

I'm disappointed......my respect for Roy has gone down a few notches this year. Still way up there but not nearly what it was.

Meanwhile, us America-hating terrorist-coddlers love him all the more, so it all balances out!

True, but how does that lame-ass song honor all those native Americans and civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

Maybe it would help if it wasn't such a God-awful dirge. I nominate "We Will Rock You" as a new anthem. Or maybe "Nothin' but a G-thang" in homage to "the people" of the President.

Or, if it has to mention America, the obvious candidate is staring us in the face:

A gambler implicates 13 NBA refs in game fixing...and the thread draws less than a dozen posts.

Roy's behavior during the National Anthem draws over 260.

What interesting priorities.

This drives me crazy. There is no reason that the national anthem needs to be performed so slowly. Listen to a military band perform the anthem--generally takes less than 70 seconds. The self-indulgent vocalists who stretch it out for 2 1/2 minutes do themselves, listeners, and the country a disservice by using one of our nation's most recognizable symbols into a vehicle for self-promotion.

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

If the main point of the National Anthem is to honor the armed forces, then they should get to nominate which song they would like to be honored by. From what I can gather, "Bodies" by Drowning Pool would probably be odds-on favorite.

I've long felt that if the purpose of the Anthem is to represent the country, "America, the Beautiful" would be a much better choice than the "Star Spangled Banner". Our current anthem focuses on warfare and the flag's perseverence throughout. The other details the country's topographical diversity, and then in the subsequent verses expounds on the foundational principles of our nation--freedom and liberty, as well as those who sacrificed to secure them. I think that would be much more appropriate as an anthem to honor America.

The fact remains that both of them are really, really crappy songs. This reminds me of Tom Lehrer's complaint that the trouble with most "traditional" songs is that they're written by average people. [video=youtube;7i4f8oohdi0]

Why not "Born in the USA"? Or "This Land is Your Land"? They're marginally less crappy, but equally suited to flag-waving, if that's your thang.

(This is not a phenomenon unique to the USA. The British National Anthem is even worse. (Except for the Sex Pistols' version of it.) But we have a song called "Jerusalem" that actually has lyrics written by a real poet, and God alone knows what they mean, so it's much better, and tends to produce the same patriotic emotions. Of course, the REAL English National Anthem is [video=youtube;vY86vhJI4r0].

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

So John Canzano busts out his Mad Libs controversial article and inserts Patriotism in all the blanks to get the Sheeple of America all fired up.

Fantastic!

I read the Bald Faced Idiot because I like to guess which hot button topic the article will be about.

Could it be "Greedy Athletes"?
Maybe "Religion in Sports"?
Or how about "Pampered Athletes" and it's sub category "Athletes are treated differently"?
Could it be "Sick Fan"?

This one was obviously "Patriots" + "Athletes are role models".

The stupidest thing about this particular article is JC has written about it before but in a positive light.

Bald Faced Fool is probably the only guy in Portland who misses the Jail Blazers with all his shriveled up heart.

At least then he could pretend to be outraged about something that was somewhat outrageous. Now he has to manufacture that outrage.

The really sad part is anyone anywhere falls for it.

SEE! EVEN THE WHITE MONKEY THINKS YOU ARE A KLAN MEMBER!

thank you for this. this was the best part of this thread by far.......

I think we should not assume that roy feels one way or the other when we did not get his side of the story.
