Roy and Miller have "solid chemistry" during today's practice

Roy said he and Miller formed an instant connection and the team “didn’t miss a beat” with them on the court together. Roy also praised the point guard’s unselfish play, deft passing, strong defense, versatility and basketball IQ. The chemistry between these two stars is one of the most pressing issues of training camp and Roy said a bond might develop faster than some expect.

“I liked it; I liked it,” Roy said. “I don’t think it’s going to be nearly as hard as people think. I think it’s going to be pretty simple. It was the first day, but there wasn’t even a moment where I was like, ‘All right, this might be a struggle.’ It was pretty cool from the jump. Even (Thursday) night, when we were going over plays (in the same unit), I was like, ‘This is flowing ... really smooth.’”

Roy, who is strongest with the ball in his hands, said Miller insisted that Roy run the offense on several occasions Friday and then flourished as an off guard. More than once, Roy said, he handled the ball in half-court sets and registered an assist by passing to a cutting Miller for a layup.

“People think he’s a ball-dominant point guard, but he’s not,” Roy said. “I remember watching him last year. There were times when Andre would handle it and times when (someone else) would come in … and handle it. Andre just kind of plays. He doesn’t have to have (the ball). A couple times today, he was like, ‘You take the point.’ I was like, ‘Cool.’ That’s what I kind of wanted to see, because (Steve) Blake lets me do that. I kind of like a point guard that let’s me have (the ball) sometimes.”

Deep down, and when it all comes out in the discussions with Coach and Roy. Roy still favors Blakey.

Roy is tip toeing around potential disharmony.

In your head. I think Roy will prefer whoever helps the team win more games. So far his career has shown that he's willing to do whatever it takes to win. Blakey is a big boy. If the writing is on the wall, he'll accept his role.

He said as much yesterday, that it is more about the team and not about "me" or what I want. He was right then. I have no reason doubt him. But he does have preferences and I'm sure he will define them in his meetings with coach.

So if the team plays better with Miller in the starting lineup, you think Roy will tell Nate to start Blake because they have history together? Nice speculation.

So Miller is balling and Roy is raving about him, Bayless is hitting game winners, has an improved jumper and the Glove loves him. Can I get a start Blakey chant please?

"BLAKEY TO THE BENCH!!" "BLAKEY TO THE BENCH!!" "BLAKEY TO THE BENCH!!"

No. But maybe a "Trade Blakey" chant.:ghoti:

McMillan insists that he is no where near settling on a first or second unit and will continue to tinker until the regular season. The group that started most of last season and opened camp as the de facto first unit —Blake, Roy, Nicolas Batum, LaMarcus Aldridge and Joel Przybilla — will start Tuesday’s exhibition opener against the Sacramento Kings. But that probably will change one night later, when the Blazers play at Sacramento, because McMillan wants to dabble with different lineups throughout the exhibition season.

Maybe the best news is no news at all. As Quick said yesterday, nothing really stood out about Blakey other than his record breaking conditioning time. That means he is still his average, solid self.

Solid until the game is on the line in the playoffs against the Houston Rockets and Rudy is wide open for three. :devilwink:

Sorry, guys. I had to post this video:

No, this can't be right.

I have quotes from posters on this board saying that Nate won't ever change lineups and is completely stuck in his ways.

You, sir, are mistaken.

:tsktsk:

But I think he is protecting his star player. I think the reason why he is so gung ho on this is due to Brandon Roy and Roy's comfort level with certain players. Like Blakey for instance. Blakey get's the hell out of the way and lets him do his thing.

And,,

Roy said he is starting to see the benefits of playing alongside Miller. Both can post up on offense, both excel off the pick and roll and both can initiate offense. What’s more, Roy said, Miller’s defensive versatility is an asset because he can not only contain point guards, but shooting guards and some small forwards, as well.

Are YOU Brandon? Man, I'm so happy you have time to post on this message board. I'm a huge fan and plan on getting your jersey for one of my boys this season.

Roy makes a good point about Miller's defensive versatility. Miller may have lost a step, but he still has nice size and strength for a point guard and can defend shooting guards at need. Small forwards seems a bit...out there.

Andre Iguodala averaged 5.3 assists last year and Roy averaged 5.1. If Iggy and Andre can share the ball then I don't see why Andre and Roy can't coexist.

Wait, this can't be right? Miller is nothing but a selfish, washed up, malcontent who will never be able to mesh with this young team ... singing him has likely cost this team its dynasty ... <cough, hack, sputter> ... what the fuck was that?! Somebody better call an exorcist.

And you know this how????:tsktsk:

I think that Roy and Miller can work well with each other for limited minutes but if they play together extended minutes one or the other may not be happy without the ball. And I think both are more effective with the ball in their hands. Therefore I think the best plan is for Miller to play 18-20 minutes a night with the 2nd team and another 8 to 10 minutes on the first team with Roy.

Whoops. Mediocre Man's entire summer criticism of McMillan just went down in flames. :devilwink:

You mean there's a chance we start Bayless/Rudy/Outlaw/Cunningham/Collins the second game?

The horror!
