Did you work for the team at that time? It was a pretty well-known tirade.

I forgot to add the Blazers paying Miles' fine for his subsequent suspension to my list.

The Portland Trail Blazers suspended forward Darius Miles for two games for "conduct detrimental to the team and insubordination," the team announced on Friday morning. The suspension comes after Miles repeatedly called coach Maurice Cheeks a racial epithet during a film session on Thursday, a newspaper reported.
"I am disappointed that we've had this distraction to deal with (on Friday)," said Trail Blazers President Steve Patterson. "We expect a certain behavior from everyone in our organization, and what happened (Thursday) is not acceptable behavior. The organization is suspending Darius for two games effective (Friday)."
Miles' agent, Jeff Wechsler, would not offer much comment on the incident, saying only, "What happened in practice should stay in practice."
As the Blazers enter midseason having lost 13 of their last 16 games, questions have swirled about how much longer Cheeks might keep his job.

True. Prior to Roy, they were the "FAIL Blazers", Telfair's penchant for carrying weapons on the team plane aside. Oh, and Qyntel Woods with the dogs, Woods showing up stoned to appearances, ZBo with the alleged rape, Darius Miles using racial slurs at Cheeks, etc. etc.

Your post doesn't contradict mine: that the team was NOT labeled "JAILBLAZERS" three years ago. They had been labeled that years before, going back to the glory days of Western Conference appearances and JR Rider.

Well, the reports leaking out are that the Vulcan's are the ones really in charge of the Roy/Aldridge contract negotiations.

In a way that makes sense. KP's legacy is wrapped around Roy and Aldridge. He would be prone to be pretty damn charmin soft in the negotiations.

So, you can bitch about KP if you like. Just be aware that your rage is likely misplaced. Buck stops with the owner. Maybe bitch about Paul Allen if it makes you feel better.

As for your other comments, you say Roy "single-handedly ...", then you say he is "the glue". Which is it?

You ask what kind of message it sends to the other players to be firm in negotiations with Roy (and Aldridge), as opposed to just giving them everything. Doesn't it seem obvious? The message is, we are not going to OVERPAY just to do it. The team wants to keep as many of these players as they can. They can't keep these other guys if Roy, LaMarcus and Oden ALL get full max deals.

Giving in right away to Roy and Aldridge would have sent this message to Rudy, Batum, Bayless, etc., "start preparing to move to another team, because the Blazers won't be able to pay if you turn out to be a better than average player."

San Antonio put the screws to Ginobili and Parker in their negotiations - and did not give them the max. They asked Duncan to take less then the maximum they could have paid him on his extension. Not one player on the Spurs is making the absolute most per year the CBA allows for them. Are they a bullshit franchise for doing these things? Was it wrong of them to ask each of the big three to take less than they could and what they originally wanted so the team could keep all three of them and still have a little left over to spend on role players?

Lamarcus Aldridge is the tricky one. He's definitely not a max player, and only a fool would pay him anything close to the max. $10-11 million is probably about right for Lamarcus, but because of the Blazers team success, and Aldridge being thursted into an overvalued view from Blazers fans (I don't think most Blazers fans realize just how good Roy is, and how much better he is than the rest of the team...in particular, how much better he is than Aldridge). Because of that, Aldridge will probably be able to demand at least $12 million a year, and will probably be looking at $13-14 million a year.

As for the Spurs, when Tony Parker signed his contract, he came off a season where he averaged 14.7 PPG and 5.5 APG. He had yet to make an allstar team. Manu Ginobili was coming off a 12.8 PPG 4.5 RPG 3.5 APG season. He had yet to be an allstar as well.

Given his age, they probably paid Parker around market value, and they overpaid Ginobili for what he had shown so far in his career. It's also easy to sell guys on staying after you win a championship...and that no state income tax is a good thing as well.

My prediction would be that Brandon Roy gets his max extension this summer and LaMarcus Aldridge goes to restricted free agency.

Also, I don't quite understand the Pritchard hate. Why would Pritchard care if Roy had a 4 or 5 year extension? Seems something that an owner would be more interested in.

I don't get it either. I have a theory that involves too much salt in people's diets, but it's probably because fans need a "bad guy", and it's almost unethical to think that Brandon Roy is doing anything wrong, can do anything wrong, or will ever do anything wrong.

So it must be KP. After all, he didn't didn't turn water into wine, he doesn't walk on water and last year he turned down LeBron James for Travis Outlaw.

Can you name a few superstars that have left their teams because of the teams' refusal to automatically max them out with an extension?

It sounds like you want to point to some history to warn us, but I am interested to hear who you're talking about.

Superstars almost never change teams via free agency, and I seriously doubt that Roy is going to be one of the few that does.
