It's really hard not to compare the two. They have so many similarities in how they play the game. The unflappable confidence, the ability to take over the game whenever they want, and the ability to let the game come to them.

There are some obvious differences too though. Dame is definitely a much better outside shooter, while Roy was definitely a much better mid-range shooter with his pull-ups and fade-aways. Yes, they play(ed) different positions, but still very much the same role in the offense. Roy handled the ball almost as much as Dame in the McMillan offense.

It would be very interesting to ask someone like LMA what they think about the two players. He's one of the only guys left who played with both. Actually Batum would probably be an even better guy to ask because he has had to guard both of them in practice.

Anyway, just curious what people think about comparing the two.

Dame so far might be a better outside shooter, quicker to the rim, better passer/distributor.

Roy was a better finisher at the rim, could create his own shot far better than Dame, so far a little better defender (at least on bigger dudes)

I dunno about quicker to the rim. Roy was sneaky fast and he had hops when he cared to use them.

Anybody else concerned that Lillard is playing the same amount of minutes as last year?

the two are very similar. dame can shoot better from outside and has longer range. Roy more clutch maybe(so far, I expect Dame to be just as clutch eventually). Roy was better at creating his shot, finishing inside, and drawing fouls(w/o looking at free throw comparison). I like that Dame plays pg though, a position much harder to fill than sg.

Dame has his rebounds up by about 3 this year. He's a 20/5/5 guy. I wish he could get his assists up to about 7 or 8 a game, but whatevs.

I can see your point, but I think Roy would get to the rim easier (sneakier moves) but doesn't have the raw speed Dame has. So maybe Dame can blow by his guy faster, but Roy could out maneuver easier due to his deceptive moves.

That's not even remotely true. It just feels that way because we haven't had a decent PG in more than a decade.

Sometimes the deep 3's reminds me of Agent Zero in his prime.

+1. There's like 20 good PGs in the league. It's pretty difficult to make a top 10 PG list, because of the guys you have to exclude. It's difficult to make a top 10 SGs list because of the guys you have to include.

Their games are so similar, but each guy is a little better at certain things than the other, but still very similar. We are very lucky to have Dame so soon after we lost Roy.

One difference is that Roy ate up all the media attention he could get. Dame seems to accept it, but doesn't live with it. Dame seems more humble, and more concerned with focusing on the game than Roy.

Sometimes Lillard seems like a SG. I don't see him really creating for his teammates. He's got the ball handling skills of a PG, and doesn't commit a lot of turnovers, but he doesn't have that Johnson/Nash/Stockton passing ability.

Roy, in his brief prime, was nearly unstoppable one on one. Damian's offensive prowess is centered around the 3pt shot. No way he'll shoot 50% all year. So I'd have to say he's not at Roy's level of offense. Neither were are good defenders. So right now, I'd give the edge to Roy.

To me, the most important comparison is this.

Lillard has knees that work.

Roy doesn't.

Those Red road uniforms (with the vertical Portland) have really really grown on me the last few years. I never liked them as much as I did the first uniforms, but now they look so crisp and clean.

You challenge the basketball gods...

no, saying that "Damian WON'T have knee injuries" is challenging them. I'm saying that as of right now, Damians injury history isn't on par with Roys (at the same age).

I think Lillard is better than Roy was. He can get off his shot much quicker and has better range (well, more efficient range if that makes sense).

Lillard will develop that floater and mid range J eventually and that will seriously blow Roy out of the water.

The basketball gods care not for your excuses! You insolent peasant! They shall smite Damian to prove a point.

Man, if he gets injured tonight I'm so not going to post here ever again.

You will not survive long enough to post here again... the Blazer fans will descend upon you like locusts.

So, once every 17 years?

I loved Roy and I love Dame. I don't like comparing two players that I think can be our best shot at superstardom.
