Gasol is Eurobasket MVP (deservedly):
Somehow I bet Navarro isn't too pleased. Seemed to me that two things sparked the Spanish turnaround from just average to completely unstoppable:
(1) inserting Garbajosa into the starters
(2) downplaying Navarro (who was heavily featured early on but seemed to be just a bench scorer later).
As to the All-Tourney team:
1) Notice the ABSENSE of Hedo (and also, bizarrely, Tony Parker)
2) Other players who I thought played well:
Ersan Ilyasova (Bucks) - The MVP of Turkey - nicely talented. If Claver ends up like him, we'll be lucky.
Omer Asik (Chicago owns his rights) - big and talented. Sort of a Brook Lopez type.
Timofey Mozgov (Russia, undrafted) - a BEAST. A real force on the boards and shot blocking, no offense to speak of but boy, can he finish.
Gortat - he's the only reason the Poles won anything. Well, him and Lampe.
I also noticed a strange trend of Black American Eastern Europeans. Viz.:
Kelly McCarty (or Mak Karti, as it said on his jersey) of Russia, David Logan of Poland (who actually was just as important as Lampe), Jeremiah Massey of Macedonia and Earl Rowland of Bulgaria.
The star center headed the EuroBasket 2009 All-Tourament Team, which also featured his teammate Rudy Fernandez, who averaged 13.6 points and led all players with 2.1 steals per game.
The rest of the All-Tournament Team was rounded out by Serbia guard Milos Teodosic, Slovenian big man Erazem Lorbek and Greek guard Vasileios Spanoulis.
