edit: Rudy to go under the knife for his back pain, nothing wrong with his leg.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Trail Blazers guard/forward Rudy Fernandez will undergo a procedure today to alleviate pain in his right leg, General Manager Kevin Pritchard announced Tuesday.

Fernandez, 24, will undergo a microdiscectomy to relieve pressure from a nerve root in his lower back that is causing pain in his right leg.

Dr. George Shanno will perform the procedure at Southwest Washington Regional Surgery Center in Vancouver, Wash.

A timetable for his return will be determined after the procedure.

Sciatica is pain in your leg usually caused by damage in your back (a nerve being pinched). If you read what you quoted, it says:

Re: Rudy to go under 'procedure' for leg injury

That is probably the cause of his back pain. Wow, that sucks, another person on injury!!

Re: Rudy to go under 'procedure' for leg injury

Doesn't looked like they changed their mind. The procedure is on his back.

Re: Rudy to go under 'procedure' for leg injury

One more injury and we're the NJ Nets.

Re: Rudy to go under 'procedure' for leg injury

I hope they don't do the wrong ...sectomy on the "lower back"! Right leg pain gone, middle leg way sore... Maybe that's the second opinion Rudy was looking for?

You're right. I just saw pain in right leg in the release in the first sentence. Sucks either way!

Re: Rudy to go under 'procedure' for leg injury

Injuries are part of the game but it seems like we are the only team getting them on a regular basis and mismanaging them. Bobby Medina and Jay Jensen need to do a better job or they need to get fired.

Re: Rudy to go under 'procedure' for leg injury

Maybe this deserves its own thread, and maybe it's just unnecessary built out of frustration. Seems odd that there's some teams that ALWAYS seem to have freak injuries, or a lot of injuries that derail seasons, careers, etc. The Clippers come to mind. As do the Blazers. Can it really be dumb luck? Really? I dunno how our training and weight staff could do something differently, I dunno what they are doing. It's probably not a fair criticism. Maybe it is the fault of KP for drafting injury prone players? I dunno. But how many happen before you wonder if there is a different training method for your guys that might work better? Previously, I would have assumed most teams are about the same in what they do. But you constantly hear about Phoenix's medical staff, and I dunno if they're doping or what, but everyone that plays there seems to love them, and the work they do, whatever it is. We tend to have nagging this after fluke that after freak something. Fuck. Sorry. Just annoyed at this.

Dude, seriously, I swear we have the worst medical staff in the league...
I've never seen shit like this!

You know whats really interesting is the article on hoopsworld talking about Chris Kaman and his vitamin D deficiency. He was having problems with energy levels and getting hurt from time to time. He was lethargic and sleeping a lot. Then they found out that he had a vitamin D deficiency which was effecting both his energy and his bone health. You know what else is amazing? Over the last few years Oden mentioned how he liked to sleep a lot.......and the bone health? Well I'll let you draw your own assumptions..

Re: Rudy to go under 'procedure' for leg injury

This is certainly sucky news after a string of even suckier news. However, this is sports. It's supposed to be entertainment. Let's try to look on the bright side. This is a huge opportunity for some players to step up. I'm excited to see Jerryd get a consistent role. I hope Webs can relax knowing he's going to have to play. I want to see what Dante can do.

This is not the season we all expected, but there's plenty of interesting things to keep us watching.

It's back surgery, that will more than likely keep him out the year. That is assuming they are a cautious as they have been with others.

I am happy for the team because they have their spot up shooter they were trying to turn him into.

Is it too early for the John Wall watch? :)

As most know because they criticized me for it, I started that watch when McAssclown decided to start soft porn over Miller.

Well...all I can say is that if this raft of injuries allows Bayless to establish himself as an excellent young player, it'll have at least one positive effect.

IF the team is healthy next year, adding an impact player in Bayless to the roster would be a big deal.

Bayless, Dante, and Jeff will all get chances soon to prove their mettle, I suspect.

Out for the year? For a procedure to relive pressure on a nerve? Somehow I think that's unlikey.

Sounds like a minimum of 2 months, with 3 being the norm for this procedure. At least that's what The Game is reporting.

Oden, Rudy, Outlaw, Batum...

All in suits for majority/entire season. This is the season from hell.

Feels a lot like the dark days of the JailBlazer era.

At least Oden, Rudy, Outlaw, and Batum aren't Derek Anderson, sitting out with dental pain. :devilwink:

Well last season we stayed remarkably healthy. Webster went down. Oden missed 21 games (as most big men do - Shaq has averaged about 60-65 games played in his career). Other than that, nothing major. Brandon missed 4 games with a tweaked hammy, Blake 13 games with that separated shoulder, but that's small potatoes by NBA standards. Check out the games played by our regular rotation guys.

Brandon 78
Aldridge 81
Batum 79
Blake 69
Oden 61
Rudy 78
Travis 81
Joel 82
Sergio 80
Martell 1

That is pretty good if you ask me. But this year has obviously been much different.

I don't think it quite equals the JailBlazer days.. we were bad because we were just plain bad. If we were healthy now, I don't think we'd be having these problems.

It feels more like 1978 to me.
