Any other runners here? Just curious if anyone else here is a runner. Farthest you've ran? How often? Still a runner? used to be?

HCP is half Mexican, so I'm sure he did a lot of running as a teenager. But then he is also half white, so once the police caught him and he showed them his "I have whiteness in me", they let him go.

I race in triathlons, so I am forced to act like I run. :) The running leg of the tri is my weakest leg, so I'd love to improve my running.

The love of my life is going to marry a guy who runs triathlons. How much time do you spend training? Do you think while you run? Is it another form of addiction?

An aside, she runs marathons and I think she does so to run from her guilt. He's the perfect training partner because he runs triathlons and he too runs from the guilt of having a son out of wedlock and then giving him up for adoption. Meanwhile, I, who have never had a father and whose dream it was to be a father am left torched at the irony.

Used to run cross country in high school. Knees are shot now. I miss it big time.

Been doing a lot of 5K's they fun and give you a nice goal to train for. Would like to do a marathon one day but would want to train quite a bit first.

Also been doing trail running and hiking, streets and pavement get boring sometimes but its sweet getting to the top of a mountain. Feel like you really acomplished something at the top. Climbed St Helens and South Sister a couple months ago it was sweet. Top of south sister still has huge snow glacier at end of September feels like you magically transport to a different season of the year then an hour later your back in summer. The trail is easy going so you don't need a bunch of crazy mountain gear or anything.

Sadly I've slacked on my routine with the crappy winter weather. Was in Cabo last Christmas that was badass to be able to run on the beach in the 80 degree sun in the cold of the winter. Kind of want to take my talents to south beach or something outside of the summer Portland has pretty crappy workout weather.

Was actually heading out to run when i wrote this, so didn't get to share as well. Had just been curious if there were other runners or not.
I've been running for maybe 6 years or so now. Used to be a smoker, and running was the only way I was able to effectively quit smoking. Have ran hood To Coast 5 times now, I think. Wonder if anyone else has. It's alot of fun. Tough, but super fun, if you get a good mix of people in your van.

I ran my first marathon last October, here in Portland. Was pretty happy with my run, overall. Actually thought it was a lot easier than I was expecting, which makes me feel good about running one a little bit faster next time. I stay at home with my almost 2 year old daughter, so most last summer, I trained by pushing her in the jogging stroller 4 days a week. Now, I usually run total 4 days a week, usually 3 runs during the week of 4-6 miles, and then a longer weekend run, of 6-10, usually. More or less, depending on if I was training for a run or anything.

I run ~25 miles a week between treadmill and road. I also do stairs because I live right by Tualatin HS.

As for shoes, once I discovered New Balance, I never have put anything else on my shoe for running. Basketball is still Nike, though.

So I'm not a serious runner, but I run, if that makes sense. I run some 5ks as well, the last of which was the Warrior Dash.

I dont run much in this weather. When the weather is nicer I run about 4-5 miles, 3 times a week. That's about all my knee's can handle. My body prefers my bike as I get older and older. I hit up the olyptical (spelling?) at the gym a lot in the winter.

I switched last year to the Vibram 5 finger shoes, the "barefoot" shoes, and have been liking those a lot lately.

I go with brooks for my running shoes. Nike and adidas are pretty bad for running.

I started running last spring using the C25K program, which is a nice program to take you from couch potato to 5k runner in 10 weeks. I do three or so 3 mile runs a week. In fall and winter I break that up quite a bit with grouse, deer and chukar hunting. I'd much rather be on top of a mountain with my bird dog than slogging along on the treadmill.

The running helped me drop quite a bit of weight. I think last winter I was around 245, and now I'm 214. Still too heavy, but heading in the right direction. I'm long since past the age when I could skip a few meals and lose 10 pounds.

I want to transition into those. I run barefoot on my treadmill, and I much prefer the feel to my New Balances I wear outside jogging.

Me, my wife and sister all run in them,a nd have a few friends going into more minimal shoes. I've felt a lot better since. I used to aggravate a knee or ankle on my right side every three months or so with normal shoes, and have been great in these. My next step, maybe this summer, is trying out a pair of running sandals. Still much too scared to run actually barefoot.

after almost a decade of injuring myself as soon as I'd get back on the road, I took a year off of everything having to do with running/jogging/etc. and then started really slow with the 5 fingers to strengthen my legs up and get a feel for how the "right" way to run was.

Still have little speed, and little stamina, but it's getting back. I'm back to running/jogging almost every day. Goal is 5 miles in 40 minutes by March 1.

Just started getting into running/jogging.

I'm skinny and very light, giving me the ideal running body type. However, because I'm almost flat footed, have Morton's foot, and exercise induced asthma, I'm slower than a 200+ lb person.

I figure to build an aerobic base until March-April. Then, do hill/interval training during the Spring. Then switch to an aerobic base/marathon training in the Summer-Fall.

This way, I can concentrate on trying to get into shape at a comfortable pace.

I see why people run in this thread.

Edit: Not really

An aside,

I think people who run excessively are running from something. Just like any other addict. It's a brain chemistry issue. I tell you, it's used as cover for bad things.

I do it purely for the competition of the triathlon races.

I guess I'm running from being a smoker. If that's what you mean. Unless SlyPokerDog was just trying to be a dick, I dunno.

self edit. :)

Sounds like cognitive dissonance to me.

You're just bitter because "your" girl left you for some other chump. Now that your illusion of her has crumbled apart, you've started accusing her of having personal issues while taking it out on the one hobby that the soon-to-be-married couple happens to enjoy: running.

And actually, I will have to agree with you. Many runners claim to experience highs that are even more pleasurable than sex. So, in a way, you kind of lost out to the "better" man.

I mean, I'm not trying to be a dick but "U mad, bro?" Which, I guess, makes me a dick.

Anyway, I hope you feel better, bud. Forget about other people's expectations and always find ways to improve yourself.

Otherwise, a guy like yourself will end up dead if he stagnates. In other words, the only way you might survive is to do some moving around, which may or may not include running. Take it from a guy who is under the delusion/belief that he has Asperger's.

it is a fact that runners have minuscule genitalia, if i jog more than 50 feet my junk is killing me from smashing around into my knees.

women runners are great to have sex with though, after extensive foreplay to loosen the vaginal walls of course

I'm running so that when I go to Afghanistan this summer, my physical fitness is among the least of my worries/things holding me back from coming home alive.

The ONLY time I run is when I play pickup basketball.

You're young. Wait 5-10 years when the metabolism starts to slow down, and you are too busy to spend 3 hours/day working out. I never ran either, until I hit my 30s.

I ran 3 marathons... and would love to run more eventually. It is a huge time commitment though. Fastest time for marathon was 3:45.

I used to write a blog when I was running... but I haven't ran much at all in the past year because of some health issues. I started the blog when I could hardly run a mile.

Did you slowly transition to them (as I've heard some people recommend, running maybe just a mile at first) or just throw them on and go out and run 5 miles?

A lot of people recommend starting even lighter. More like a quarter mile at first and building up from there. But it depends on your running style to begin with. If you already run on the forefoot, then you won't see as drastic differences as somebody that has a strong heel strike.
