You could be right. Griffey is pretty clearly the biggest figure in Mariners history, whereas there can definitely be arguments over who would be the preeminent Seahawk or Sonic. Some might argue that Steve Largent is still the biggest name in Seahawks history, despite what Russ has done the past decade. Nobody's legitimately arguing Ichiro or A-Rod over Griffey.

Not everyone liked Griffey or ARod.
Edgar was right up there for most popular....

Wait, what?

Junior fell three votes shy of being a unanimous first-ballot HOFer, a record (at the time). Everyone who loved baseball loved Junior, even if he wasn't on your team. I've never heard anyone say they did not like Junior.

No question the best Mariner player ever.....I knew some in Seattleites later in his career that though he wasn't as plugged in to the fans and city as he should be.
Edgar was one of those personalities/people that everyone liked. He rubbed well with the ordinary fan.

He should have been unanimous. Only fucking morons don't vote Griffey into the HoF. There's no justification to not vote him in.

And he was respected and liked by every single person.

i have over 200 different griffey cards. He was the reason i started card collecting.

Yeah its completely different now. Not sure how long it will last though. I mean boxes of cards going for 2-5k!!! And the boxes have less packs then in the past and less cards per pack.
Its pretty much insane. Lol.

When i went back thru and realized i had a bunch of shaq rookie cards i got right back into it during the pandemic. :)

I agree with that on same levels, but it's not the same as saying "not everyone liked Griffey." Maybe it's semantics. I understand the argument that not everyone thought he did what he could/should have. Totally. But show me a person that disliked Griffey, and I offer this comparison:

“I'm suspicious of people who don't like dogs, but I trust a dog when it doesn't like a person.”

Gary Payton should be up there too.

I like Wilson. But I don't think he is better than Griffey or Ichiro in terms of stardom. You could feel the popularity of those two all the way to Portland. Wilson, kinda, but not close to the same.
 
I still think Prefontaine is likely the most popular athlete of all time for Oregon.

After sitting back nursing a hot toddy (hellacious cold) pondering Junior and what he meant to THAT CITY UP NORTH of us, you are correct that you'd probably not find anyone now or then, that disliked junior. I had a couple customers up there & at the time he requested a trade for good reasons, they were negative about it. They probably idolize him now though.

It's to0 bad he never played in a world series. Im surprised that team hasn't moved, talk about a franchise that that hasn't been contenders for a while, even as they have changed up management a number of times.
And Portland wants a MLB baseball team to support?
