How much salary cap room will the Blazers have this summer? On Storyteller's site, he has the current cap around 58 mill., and with Francis, LaFrentz, Randolph, and Ruffin coming off the books, he has us around 55 mill. for this summer. I believe the Blazers will let Frye walk, taking them down another 4 mill. If they then let Outlaw and Blake walk, they go down another 7-8 mill. This takes the Blazers down to about 43 mill. If the cap even goes up a million or two, the Blazers could possibly have anywhere from 15 to 17 million to spend. Hopefully that is close to being correct.

The next question then is the trade exception that was created with the Diogu trade. Could the Blazers package that exception for a player with an expiring contract to then go down another 3 mill.? Could the Blazers find a way to dump Rodriguez and the draft picks for yet another player to get down even further?

I believe the Blazers will be an active player in the free agent market and I also believe they want to get around 20 mill. in cap room available for a possible big fish. I'm just wondering if they will be able to get that 20 mill. amount.

Yea that is interesting. It might be tied to timing with the collective bargaining agreement. But I have heard the NBA is going to open up negotiations early. Seeing as how that has happened in the past, that will probably just make it so the NBA players association only goes on strike for 1/4 of the year, instead of half of it!

Seeing as how that has happened in the past, that will probably just make it so the NBA players association only goes on strike for 1/4 of the year, instead of half of it!

I will laugh my ass off if the idiot players go on strike. People all over the country are struggling to live on food stamps and unemployment and these players are going to strike if they can't get more millions? Haha, talk about losing fans.

I have a related question. I believe that what the front office will ultimately do is use the cap space in a trade, similar to the Clippers acquisition of Camby or OKC's attempted steal of Chandler...

My question is this... Lets say we end up w/ 12 mil of cap room. Could we simply trade Diogu's TPE (just under 3 mil) for a player making 15 mil? -- using that 12 mil cap room to make up the difference?

I believe that a TPE can't be packaged w/ a player, but for a team simply desperate to shed salary, does anyone know if this is a possibility? If so, it at least temporarily works to extend our cap room by 3 mil.

Meh...it doesn't really matter if we get under the salary cap anyway. There aren't any free agents worth a max contract.

I'd prefer getting far enough under the cap that we can make a trade with a team where we're able to take on more salary than we send out.

Such as...Travis Outlaw plus Sergio Rodriguez for Gerald Wallace...or something like that.

It wouldn't have to be a free agent. The cap space could be used in a lop sided trade too. I agree that I don't see a free agent coming, but with the cap space you could offer young (cheap) talent and cap relief, which is what most teams are looking for. No. The TPE counts against the Blazers' cap space so, if they don't use it in moving up in the draft, they'll have to renounce it in order to be able to maximize their cap room.
