The immersion thing holds them back. They're talked at in a language they don't understand well. More time spent with the language barrier than on the subject matter.

Immigrants typically speak their native tongue at home, first generation. Second generation are bilingual, and third speak English.

Besides all that, the Chinese folks in Chinatown seem to prosper and thrive not speaking much English. That's a win.
