LOS ANGELES (AFP) – An American rock guitarist has filed a lawsuit against Coldplay, accusing the popular British band of plagiarising one of his songs on their latest hit album, according to court documents published on Thursday.

Joe Satriani, known for his instrumental compositions, alleges Coldplay's song "Viva la Vida" had "copied and incorporated substantial original portions" from his own track "If I Could Fly" recorded on an album released in 2004.

Satriani's lawsuit demands damages and "any and all profits" related to the alleged copyright infringement.

A representative for the band was not immediately available for comment.

Coldplay's latest album "Viva la vida," released in June, has topped the charts in Europe and the United States. The recording helped Coldplay win seven nominations for the 2009 Grammy awards.

Sounds really close to me, I hate Coldplay, and seeing Satch play live is like being acid trip. The guy is mind boggling good. Did i mention Coldplay blows.

I can't believe it. It's not that I can't believe that Coldplay would plagiarize someone else's stuff, but that they could play anything by Satriani. It's not my style of playing, but damn he's unreal.

who knows if they have ever even actually heard his song.in the future, every melody and chord progression will have been done already, hell someone might as well just make a keyboard album of 1,000,000 little chord progressions and melodies so that they can sue everyone.

Agreed. Led Zeppelin should sue The White Stripes for stealing all their riffs. Tom Petty should sue the Strokes for taking all his cords.

Yeah I agree there is a lot of SIMILAR stuff out there but usually its only for a few notes here or a few notes there....but this goes over the line IMO. WAY too similar. Like drexler said..a lot of stuff has been done, its hard do come up with something 100% original
