Did anyone think he'd take less than $30M/yr? This is a free agent signing we have to secure in the off season.

I have heard little. Is Max actually asking for 30 Mil?

How many years and what figure is Max asking of the Tigers, or when he becomes a FA?

heard he turned down at least 24 MM a year, for probably 5/6+ years is my guess

Sounds like he wants to be Verlander's equal, and no doubt he can be.

Come to Daddy Max.... the evil dark empire is beckoning....(wait that's now Guggenheim and TWB-C).

MoFo's, The games down under came and went, and DTV STILL is being blacked out of the fun and games...! I'm gonna Nuke those bastages, or blow an artery trying...!!!

...^^^ if that's true, he's a greedy idiot. If they offered a 5/6 year extension he'd be 36 at the end of the contract. How much does he hope to get next year, and how much f'n money is enough?

...He had a career year last year and may not be nearly as good this year, plus there's always the possibility of injury...he's taking a big gamble IMO.

I did not know that....not that it makes any difference does it?

David Bowie, Mila Kunis have it as well, both I believe from childhood accidents...tho' what about Max, how did he get the Husky look? By birth or injury?

no, obviously it doesn't matter. I've been going to many dog shows, seen to many Husky's, yep...!

A very Big Gamble, betting the House...hope he don't blow that arm/shoulder out....or he will be counting pennies.

Most likely looking for Kershaw type money. I hope his fucking arm falls off.

Going into last season he had a career mark of 52-42 & was given a 3M dollar raise after a good season. Last season was a career year & he was given a 9M dollar raise to 15M. And That's! not enough. Just ANOTHER greedy bastard. Yeah I'm with Messiah, I hope his arm falls off.

Amen...Me 3...!!!

The greedy fokker wants his salary doubled. He is NO Kershaw either. Hell, honestly I don't think any ballplayer is worth 30 mil. But I said that with A-Roids 25 mill too....WTF...!!!

59...I want this guy in pinstripes more than I wanted Cliff Lee. I could care less about the money. Phelps and Nuno don't replace an aging CC and retired Kuroda.

...I didn't say anything about not wanting him in pinstripes, and I did say anything about how much money he will get. I said "he's a greedy idiot" for turning down the Tigers' offer if it was for "$24 Mil at 5-6 years".

Yes, he gambled, no he's not greedy. The "greedy" tag is a little silly when talking about professional athletes. Baseball is a multi-billion dollar proposition, payroll is ownership's biggest expense. The players have a very limited window where they can command what the market deems their worth. These players have an obligation to fetch that when they can. If Scherzer can replicate the success of last season, there's no reason to believe he can't make Kershaw money. Scherzer netting a five year deal at the end of the season ends any mystery as to his intentions in this offseason. As for whether or not the Yanks pick him up, who comes off the books to make this work within the framework of the luxury tax? I know the Ghost of the Captain will go, but who else is up?

...nothing silly about it...if you admit he's taking a gamble that means he's obviously holding out for more money. Hence "greed".

IF & only IF he can duplicate it, then you discuss the multi year contract. But to demand that kind of money after ONE career season. Please, greedy IS the right word.

It's not. Greedy isn't the word for a man who has exactly one more year to command blockbuster money. And yes, if he plays as capably as last season he'll get Kershaw money. Barring catastrophic injury, even if he regresses slightly to considerably, he'll get paid what the Tigers offered him this season or slightly more on the open market. He gets to legitimately ask for this kind of money one more time, this is it, wring every dollar out of this opportunity, it's not coming again for a mid-30's front line starter.

Greedy isn't the right word, but petty is a great word for the Tigers organization. Releasing a presser calling your 29-year old stud of a frontline starter greedy is the tactic of a bygone era and does nothing but engenders bad blood.

When a city is in Detroits current fiscal state is and a man rejects that money and time while people who perform essential human services are probably wondering how much longer they'll have jobs it certainly does qualify as greed. The Tiger fans supported that team even though their city is in a low mode operation, drew what 3 mil plus. If I were a Detroiter I'd not pay a nickel to watch Scherzer on the days he pitches. Generally I don't begrudge salaries, as Tony Bennett once sang "Nice Work If You Can Get It" but in the Motown Situation Greed certainly applies.

If it's not greed I don't know what you would call rejecting a $144 million offer.

Look IMO no one is worth the kind of money these athletes are being paid because its us the fans that pay for it. And the owners are not going to understand the cost to the fans until they start seeing more & more empty seats because fans can no longer afford to attend games. As far as the comparisons of Kershaw & Scherzer, lets take a look..........

Over the last 3 seasons there won & lost records are similar but that's where it ends...............

Kershaw.........51-23........Scherzer.........52-19
Kershaw.........2.21 ERA.........Scherzer..........3.69 ERA
Kershaw.........709 strike outs........Scherzer........645 strike outs
Kershaw...........0917 WHIP.........Scherzer.......1.172 WHIP

Kershaw has led the league for 3 straight seasons in WHIP & ERA. He has led the league in strike outs in 2 of the last 3 seasons. And has finished 1st, 2nd, and 1st in CYA voting

As posters like 59 & myself have repeatedly pointed out, you can't just go on wins, you need the ENTIRE package. Kershaw has done that, Scherzer has not....YET! Until he does a 9M dollar raise & 15M for the year is more then enough, for now. JMO.

Its not greed, he's making a calculated business decision. Its unfortunate that people toss around labels such greed in this instance. Only he can decide what is the right decision for him and his family. Not wanting to settle for a low ball offer not not make him greedy, rather I see the Tigers being cheap and manipulative. If you see greed, than that is your baggage, not Max's.

What would be your definition of greed. One great season does not entitle you to superstar status.MAYBE if he can come close to last seasons numbers he'll be a little more worthy. But HOLY SHIT! man you're offered a 9M dollar raise & he wants an 18M dollar raise. For ONE great season? Yeah GREED is definitely the right word.

" wring every dollar out of this opportunity " = greed

Yep, I'm going with Merriam Webster on this one......Greed:: a selfish desire to have more of something (especially money).
Not my words, Webster's.

It will always amaze me how, ball players make such filthy money...when some of the most technological of minds, who work to advance societies, or Engineer and perfect Space Flight, or the Scientist in the Lab making headway's into the unknown, advancing all mankind, never see a fraction of the money a ball player makes.

Or as Willie Mays said: "I can't believe they pay me to play baseball, the thing I love to do the most".

The player gets to choose...take a deal or wait for FA. Greed would be something much uglier, additional outrageous contract terms above and beyond the norm. But in this instance, precedent shows that players waiting until FA generally command much better terms for their services.

Its only greed in your eyes because you think that the number is high and that you would settle for the deal. Its only greed to those that sell themselves short. But if you want to call it greed, have at it. Then I adopt Gordon Gecko's mantra, greed is good.

...spin it however you want...it's still greed. $150 Mil is not "low balling" either...and "a calculated business decision"?...really?...and I suppose Cano wasn't greedy?

Dude...I wasn't calling you out. Just referencing our previous discussions about Cliff Lee, lol! When I want to call you out....it will be much more obvious. ;)
