LAS VEGAS -- The Trail Blazers may be sweating out a Friday deadline to discover whether the Utah Jazz match their contract offer to restricted free agent Paul Millsap, but that doesn't mean they are idly waiting for the suspense to end.
The Blazers explored another free agent possibility Tuesday when they worked out Sean May on a UNLV campus practice court. It was one of two workouts May underwent Tuesday. He also performed for the Sacramento Kings. The unrestricted free agent plans to work out for two more teams this week: Cleveland today and the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday.
Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard refused to go into detail about May's workout, which was viewed by coach Nate McMillan, team managers and other staff members, except to say the 6-foot-9 forward "did a nice job."
The workout seems to signal the Blazers are already exploring their next option in the event that Utah matches their $32 million contract offer to Millsap, but Pritchard said that's not the case.
"Don't read anything into that," he said. "We just want to take a look at a lot of guys. That's what summer league's for; that's what the summer's about. Nate and I have always wanted to take a look at as many guys as we can."
The Blazers' workout was closed. But Sacramento evaluated the one-time college star just before the Blazers and the Kings were scheduled to play a summer league scrimmage, as players, staff, media and a few fans trickled in. May underwent a series of shooting drills, post moves and related basketball activities with Kings assistant coaches Mario Elie and Shareef Abdur-Rahim.
May displayed three-point range, low-post ability and looked as if he had lost a significant amount of weight since the end of the regular season. May said his weight remains near 260 pounds, but that he has shed four percent of his body fat since the end of the season, his third with the Charlotte Bobcats.
"Both workouts went really well," May said. "Portland was really good and I like their staff a lot. I think they like me. I think they can see it fitting. Right now, I'm fighting for my career, to get my career back on track. I think they notice that. I'm in the best shape of my life. I feel great, I move great, the workout went well and I shot the ball well. I think they like that."...........................
