I wonder how Kenny Anderson would do as a color guy. Every time I've heard him interviewed, he's been pretty good.

Fuck that T-WolfI just had an idea - Brandon Roy. Blazer ties. Always seemed fairly articulate. Knows the game. Locally popular.
Rip City Report podcast. The first 5 minutes is intro and even then it takes a while to get to anything substantive. The Calabro interview starts around the 25:00 minutes mark.
Fuck that T-Wolf
Also, he seems to want nothing to do with the city of Portland, his voice is like listening to nails on a chalk board. High and cracks all the time...You know? You know? You know?

I'm also somewhat perplexed as to why Roy seems to want to little to do with Portland. The Blazers were the vast majority of his his career, certainly the place of all of his highlights and they paid him a TON of money even when they knew he was injured and well after his playing days were over. Just doesn't seem very grateful or attached to the team that game him a stage.
Anyone else notice how Calabro said he doesn't refer to the teams as 'we' or 'us', but when he described his favorite game broadcast, he kept saying 'we' and 'us'.
not complaining, just noticing.
Getting rid of Rice indicates to me that the team wants to be more professional. Hiring a newb doesn't seem to fit with the direction my feeble mind believes they are going.

I like to be entertained, personally. I like anecdotes. I don't need a tv color guy telling me about a play I literally just saw.Exactly, that's why I think someone like Steve Smith, Brent Barry or Greg Anthony would be great paired with Calabro. Calabro is a high energy play-by-play guy. You don't need a yuck-it-up morning zoo kind of side kick for him. You also don't need/want a clueless noob that's just learning the ropes. Give me a knowledgeable, articulate professional to add insight into what's going on on the court. If I want laughs, I'll watch Seinfeld reruns.

If I wanted to hear "you know" a billion times a game, maybe.
I don't want attempts at humor either. I want someone who is humorous.Anecdotes are fine, they provide insight based on the broadcasters past experiences - which is why many former players make good color commentators.
What I don't need is mindless attempts at humor and one line zingers (like Mark Jackson and his stupid hand-down-man-down bullshit).

I'll think on this more, but I love Gruden on MNF. I like Walton, JVG, Webber is solid, Brent Barry makes me laugh with his God awful puns, but that might make me cringe after 82 games, Jay Bilas is awesome, McEnroe is great on tennis.Examples?

I want someone who knows the game, but I also want someone who is genuinely funny.
What I hope they don't get is a guy who will be there just to tell me what I just saw.
I like Walton, but think his age and health would prevent him from traveling with the team for 41 games a year.
Brent Barry is in my top 3, and Webber is another I could live with.
I don't want someone to describe what I just saw. Calabro will do that with his call in real time. I want someone to explain what's going on behind what's happening on the court. Give me the insight you have as a former player or coach.

I have to respectfully say FUCK NO to this idea. Setting aside the fact that Roy was a turncoat traitor, and a sniveling me-first diva in much the same way LA was, his voice would be AWFUL to listen to.I just had an idea - Brandon Roy. Blazer ties. Humor is very subjective. Even successful professional comedians turn off a large percentage of their audience. Hard to please everyone. For example I do not think Jay Bilas is humorous in any way, shape, or form. Walton I like in very very small doses.
I do like Brent Barry though, just don't find him funny. But he seems to be someone most people here would be good with.
Then while I do want someone humorous, YOU don't. Cool. What I think is boring as fuck, others might enjoy.
Can I ask why? This isn't to be combative, but I am really wondering what he would bring that you would want?
Every time I have seen him on NBA TV or as a color commentator for a game. I have found him to be very informative, well spoken, and non irritating. Being low on the irritation scale is extremely important to me. If I am going to listen to someone for 82 games.....that person can't bug the shit out of me. I doubt I would ever mute Smitty. He might not be a home run....bu I can see why OB and others would want him. Again we have Calabro for the excitement portion.
Would he be too boring? That is possible too. Brent Barry would fall into the same category as Steve Smith. Quality color guys, but maybe not enough "homerism" for our taste.
"search for the color commentator"
Why does he or she have to be black?
May get me in trouble, but I had to say it
