California cities overrun by rat infestations according to new study
Increase in homeless population along with government restrictions on select pesticides have fueled rat infestations in major cities across California according to a new report.
An ever-growing number of rodents in California -- particularly in Los Angeles -- is being fueled by a spiking homeless population and restrictions on rodenticides that are risking a public health crisis, according to a study released Tuesday.
The report by political action committee Reform California cites recent rodent-related events over the past six months, including an employee at the Los Angeles Police Department contracting Typhus and a rat falling from the ceiling of a Buffalo Wild Wings onto the menu of a patron, as proof of an "undeniable problem" in the Golden State.
"California is being overrun by rodents," said Carl DeMaio, chairman of Reform California. "Without immediate emergency action by state and local government, we face significant economic costs and risk a public health crisis."
Rodent's can carry dangerous diseases such as typhus, plague and salmonella, in addition to their roles contributing to asthma.

"Contrary to common belief, being bitten by a rodent is rare and is not the most common way diseases are spread. Nonetheless, reports of city workers being bitten by rodents is on the rise – with most recent cases being reported in Los Angeles," the report notes. "Two other vehicles of transmission are far more prevalent: fleas and urine droppings."
The study also surveyed 23 pest control companies in California, and found that all of the reported that rat service requests were up almost 60 percent in the past year. Included in the study was a list of "rattiest cities" in the nation published by the pest-control company Orkin, which named Los Angeles as the second most rat-infested city in the nation behind Chicago.
At a press conference at Los Angeles City Hall on Tuesday, DeMaio there were two particular reasons behind the rodent explosion.
"First, the homeless population increase, which provides a source of food which supports population growth," he said. "Second, many local governments, including Los Angeles, have banned the most effective practices for detecting and eradicating rats."

Reform California said the rodent population can be controlled using the most effective tools for pest control, but Los Angeles discontinued use of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides in 2014, a move the group claims that led to the spike.
The report, spearheaded by DeMaio and various vector control industry leaders, asks Gov. Gavin Newsom to declare a public health emergency in the Golden State and require public entities to address the situation. It also calls on the state Legislature to oppose Assembly Bill 1788, which seeks to outlaw certain rodent-deterring products that use more robust chemicals but have concerned environmentalists.
"Instead of acting to address this developing crisis, California state lawmakers are just days away from passing legislation to ban the best rodent-control tools and methods available and would require use of less effective, so-called `green alternatives,"' DeMaio said. "It's madness."
Pest control companies echoed that sentiment, saying their hands are tied by government regulations that force them to use "green pest control" to eradicate rodents.
"The professional pest control industry has gone to Sacramento, we've explained as professionals to committees, that we as professionals know how to help you, you license us, you regulate us, but now you don't listen to us," Rob Cartwright of Cartwright Pest Control told FOX11.
Proponents of the legislation contend the targeted rat poisons often wind up having a deadlier effect when rats that ingest the poison are consumed by wildlife, according to FOX11. Proponents also contend such poisons present a danger to children who may accidentally ingest them.
Besides a 12 percent spike in homelessness in Los Angeles County in the past year, another problem is illegal dumping. Last month, FOX 11 reported that Los Angeles County cited 85 downtown businesses for not having proper trash receptacles, exacerbating the problem of illegal dumping.
The Los Angeles City Council recently allocated more than $6.5 million to the Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation to cover costs of hygiene and health services and cleanup teams that will target areas in desperate need of cleaning. Mayor Eric Garcetti has said the revamping of trash-cleanup efforts and outreach to homeless communities using "cleaning and rapid engagement" teams to respond to problem areas.

"They haven't changed much since 2004, 2005. Their hallmark is just knuckle-dragging, senseless violence -- not to gain money, like the La Cosa Nostra or for a profit motive, but just for respect and turf," he said. "They have no purpose really, other than just organization around violence."
The former head of the FBI's first MS-13 tass force gave some background on how the gang was formed and said despite managing drug and prostitution rings, they usually don't flash their cash out in public.
He also said the MS-13 members living in America are lower on the totem pole of the organization, referring to them as "thugs" and claimed they aren't fueled by ideology.

"They're into extortion, they're into drugs and prostitution but you won't see them driving fancy cars, gathering in a lot of wealth. They're a different organization in El Salvador. They're more of a paramilitary organization there. Here they're just a bunch of thugs."
Swecker said they tend to target those in their own community and claimed there about 10,000-20,000 MS-13 members wreaking havoc in the United States today.
He blamed the lack of security at the southern border for their entry and said it's hard to pin down exactly how many have come and gone in recent years.

"They target immigrant communities. They form up around immigration communities... Most of them are illegal. They're in and out of the country all the time. But for whatever reason, they tend to prey on their own communities, which is insidious," he said.

There's about 10,000 hard-core gang members in the United States, maybe 20,000 associates of MS-13, and they come and go so frequently through our porous borders. They mingle in with the caravans. They've associated themselves with the Sinaloa cartel. They're soldiers for the Sinaloa cartel. They're into human trafficking. They're in and out so often, it's very difficult to pinpoint how many there are floating across the border at any given time."

The Trump administration is beefing up troop levels at the U.S.-Mexico border, with the new acting defense secretary, Richard Spencer, on Tuesday approving a Department of Homeland Security request for an additional 2,100.
The Department of Defense announced the move on Wednesday; the troops will join 4,500 others at the border.
TRUMP ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCES MAJOR CRACKDOWN ON ASYLUM SEEKERS
About 1,100 newly deployed active-duty troops will assist with logistical support and aerial surveillance at ports of entry and airports in Texas, according to reports by Politico.
And 1,000 Texas National Guard members, overseen by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, will provide supplemental help to Customs and Border Protection staff to oversee two temporary migrant holding facilities.
The move comes as Democratic lawmakers have ratcheted up criticisms of conditions at the border, assailing the treatment of migrants and refusing to provide additional funding for a border wall.
For his part, President Trump has toughened up the rules for asylum seekers, the majority from Central America, by rolling out a new policy Monday that requires migrants to first seek asylum in another country on their journey to the U.S. before reaching an American port of entry.
In late June, Congress approved a $4.6 billion humanitarian aid package to provide additional resources for migrants coming across the border.

That article is from 2008. They have grown since then and I agree as a percentage they are still small but as a degree of ruthless violence that are up there.
My brother in law is a very quite guy and hardly ever gives an opinion of the cuff but he's worried about this group as compared to others as they are about taking on territory rather than money. The big think though according to him is they are cold blooded and killing anyone that gets in their way. Also, and Im not a border wall guy but a improved immigration and security guy, NOT an Open Borders guy, put he's say;'s many of these scum bags are here illegally and many deported multi times.
Im going to put his subject to rest, I just want us as a society to be vigilant.

I'll comment....The Attorney General and the regional police, CIA and FBI are in charge of dealing with organized crime according to their jurisdiction.....fuck criminals...all of them and the gangs they torment behind.....I honestly don't think anyone has changed that stance in my 65 years on the planet. This is what I see, I see multiple people who have put in hours of time and hundreds of dollars to feature and represent this community on a very large stage. This weekend we will be getting lot's of attention and hopefully some new members from it. But we also might be attracting some scrutiny from other members of the media.
Now again, I haven't edited or deleted anything you said. Yesterday when you weren't getting the discussion you desired from your anti Muslim posts you proceeded to create a brand new thread devoted just to that. Do you really need two separate threads in the same day to bash an entire religion and the people who follow it?
I closed your thread and then merged with the other Muslim hate thread because one is enough. I respect and will defend people posting their thoughts and opinions but multiple threads covering the same subject when that is a very narrow and arguably hateful take is not a good look for this community.

Well, I guess I don't know how "we" got into this discussion. But MS -13 has not got shit to do with race in my view. They are punks period, no matter who joins, and as far as I can see, it is mostly central Americans.
Yes I do know of them, they introduced themselves to me in So Cal the recent winter I spent there. I was going to Harbor Freight to pick up and order, parked in the shopping maul lot and started toward the store.

Trump administration scores win over challenge to asylum restriction

New rule attempts to address immigration loopholes; Ray Bogan reports from Washington, D.C.
A federal judge decided Wednesday to leave in place a Trump administration rule that imposes restrictions on individuals seeking asylum in the United States if they passed through a third country on their way to the border between the U.S. and Mexico, potentially leading to a sharp reduction in Central American migrants entering the country.
The rule, published in the Federal Register last week, requires people seeking asylum to first apply in one of the countries they pass through on their way to the U.S., with certain exceptions. The rule was quickly met with a legal challenge from advocacy groups, who moved for a temporary restraining order blocking the rule. After a hearing in Washington, D.C. federal court, District Judge Timothy J. Kelly denied the motion. The rule will remain in place for the duration of the case, unless the decision is successfully appealed.
"We are disappointed in the court's decision today," said Claudia Cubas, litigation direction for the Capital Area Immigrants' Rights Coalition.
Kelly, who was appointed to the bench by President Trump said the immigrant advocate groups who filed the lawsuit did not show that their work would be irreparably harmed if the policy moved forward.
With certain exceptions, the rule requires individuals to apply for and be denied asylum in another country in order to apply in the U.S. That means that migrants from Central American nations who travel through Mexico – who make up a significant portion of recent asylum seekers – will not be eligible for asylum in America unless they previously applied for asylum in Mexico or any other country they traversed and were turned down.
The new rule’s exceptions include certain cases of human trafficking.
The rule is meant to crack down on asylum seekers coming to the U.S. more for economic reasons than to escape persecution in their home countries. Administration officials say this could help close the gap between the initial asylum screening that most people pass and the final decision on asylum that most people do not win. The goal in part is to allow quicker determinations in these cases.
The policy follows the Trump administration's Migrant Protection Protocols, commonly referred to as the "remain in Mexico" policy. Under that policy, asylum seekers were often told to go back to Mexico to await hearings, rather than be allowed to remain in the U.S.
