Quick! Throw a trenchcoat on that Venus De Milo there, and replace the "dirty words" in those Zappa songs with "fudge" and "peanut butter". Replace "death camps" with "extended rest spas" in our history lessons. "Assassination" shall become "political re-assignment" in poli-sci studies.

I can see both sides of this.

I don't know that the use of the n-word is what made the piece a great book... so if it can be adjusted to maximize the audience, then that isn't the end of the world.

On the other hand, even given the inflammatory nature of the word, there should be some intellectual conditioning that occurs where a piece is contextualized and the value of the book distilled.

Downright silly that they would change the words in a book, especially one that has been read for generations and is considered a classic.

Sorry, PC Police, but they used the word back then, when the book was written. That has to be considered in the context of the usage of the word.

As more words in the book become considered offensive, the whole thing might get rewritten.

They're editing the word so that Huck Finn can be taught in high schools. I say treat it like books which have a lot of sex. Don't change the book--just teach it at colleges instead of high schools, which are run like prisons and abhor controversy.
