We may have to re-evaluate his long term value to the team. Meaning he has some. I know a lot of you think he dribbles too much. Well so does Nash and Kidd at times. Right now I keep starting Blake. But I also keep giving more minutes to Sergio. Long term I am just fine with Bayless and Sergio at PG

let's not start jerking ourselves off too soon, the guy had 6 turnovers on 9 assists ... but yes, he looked pretty good out there both defensively and with his shot, he's just got to tighten things up a little bit more.

better than blake..........several times blake refused to past on a 3v1 fast break.

He's progressing. The guy is only 22 years old. I sometimes forget how young Sergio is.

Lets not bother with the stats tonight. Most of those TO's were on the receiving end. Give credit where credit is due.....the last few games he has been running the show very well.

Based on how Rodriguez has looked so far this year, I'd give him the lion's share of the minutes, and give Blake the lesser minutes. Even if Rodriguez regresses, it's not like the team is benching a real impact player in Blake. If things go poorly, you can always adjust the minutes again. But, for now, I'd like the see the player with some upside play, and that's Rodriguez. He's played well enough to deserve a longer look each game.

He's our Bobby Jackson (like he was on the Kings for that stretch). Sergio can be an incredible 15-20 mpg type of role player for us, and I'd love that. One thing that'll have to happen, and it'll be more effort on Roy's part to cut to the hoop, is their chemistry, I think it'll get there though. Roy just has to start realizing how easy Sergio can make his life if he allows it.

Roy did go in to the post tonight a little, and I liked that a lot! (shades of rookie year)

The way Sergio is progressing, I can see him being the team's near-term starter.

Go Sergio!
GO BLAZERS!

I would like to see him improve on his entry passes into the post. He was having trouble feeding Greg on the pick and roll.

People love naming people bench players but lets be real. Sergio doesn't see himself as a 6th man, in a few year he will want to start and he should start as long as his shot keeps improving. When we have Sergio out there the whole team is alive because they know they could get a pass at any moment and they see their hard cuts get rewarded.

Agreed. This team benefits a lot from a pg who instinctively wants to make others look good. Sergio's play where he penetrated and circled around 1.5 times, and then dished to the open 3 was *awesome*. Everyone was watching him and wondering what he would do next - and then he surprised them all.

I thought both Blake and Sergio were excellent tonight, really excellent.

I also really love how both Rudy and Sergio pass to a three-shooter, and then stay there to screen them on the shot. Just beautiful, smart ball. This team has no end of players who drain open 3s.

I just hope and pray Sergio is not traded.

I havent been a big Sergio supporter, but he's winning me over more and more.

if sergio can shoot 45% he will be a star in this league.

Hell even if he can get to a semi-respectable 42% and be consistent (ie. no more than a 5% dip on a per game basis -- shooting 25% one night and then going off for 66% another isn't going to cut it) he's got a better than average shot of earning the starting spot.

I consider myself pretty neutral in the Blake/Sergio/Jerryd debate, I just want to see the best player get the minutes and touches, if that ends up being El Chacho then good for him, and better for the Blazers.

All our guys are having trouble with that pass. I'm not sure why, but I think it's because they're not used to seeing our center get fronted so much yet. It's not an easy pass since you have to lob it over the top of the defender and then you have to worry about weak-side help. I think the key is to enter it to the post quickly rather than waiting too long. They'll get this down after enough practice though.

Sergio had a pretty decent game last night - but let's remember he had to play a pretty much washed up Lindsey Hunter all night long...

I think it is because they are not forcing the issue and rightly so. We had great ball movement last night, why ruin that by forcing it inside? Attack the basket and dump it off to him.
Otherwise everyone starts standing around. Greg got 22 against GS (Where is the problem?) Last night we scored 116...again no problem. Our centers scored 25 last night without anyone feeding them the ball. Perfect IMO

Blah, Hunter may have lost a step but he's still a very active defender and it showed. I think he forced at least 2 of sergio to's. There are much worse backup pg out there so i think we can give some cred to sergio.

Hey, wasn't there a guy who kept getting flamed for posting on BBF over and over the last several years about Sergio being something really special and if Nate started to give him some real minutes it would become obvious to all?

I forget his name but that's one smart poster, IMO. :dunno:

Until this year Sergio had shown no real commitment to playing defense and the mechanics of his shot were utterly broken last season. In the offseason he worked on correcting the latter and is improved in the former. He's getting his shot and making the most of it, but it has as much to do (or more) with earning the minutes by correcting deficiencies as being given the minutes.

I have been impressed by Sergio's on the ball defense lately. He has greatly improved in that area. This combined with the lack of ugly turnovers has been the key to his getting more minutes. Now if he could develop a floater or some other finishing skills he will be great.

I have been giving Sergio some cred - he is trying to stay in front of his man and his shot is 3000000% better than last year - but let's not get crazy about him having a better night than Blake. Blake was going most of the time against Rose and doing a darn good job of it - and Hunter is a shell of his former self - he is slow and looks as if he should have been retired from the league already.

I actually love the idea of Sergio coming off the bench for the same reason I love Rudy not starting. Both bring energy at a time when the games enters a lull. It's like splashing cold water on the team. I don't care about starting the best five players; I care about starting the players that fit well with each other. Sergio and Rudy fit together like beer goggles and regret--there's no reason to separate them.

If Sergio could can big threes like Blake can, then hey, he's our PG.

Right now, he's on my "trade carefully" list.

I don't see how Sergio can work out for us long term.

Who are the best guards on this team?

Roy first.

Rudy second.

Unless we trade one of those guys, they both will get a ton of playing time, often on the floor together.

Sergio is playing better, I grant him that.

But, our perimeter defense is terrible. Broken. Has to be fixed.

Roy and Rudy will hopefully improve.

Roy and Rudy will not ever improve enough to become "stoppers", nor will they improve enough to hide a defensive liability like Sergio.

Blake isn't the answer either. Bayless is an unknown, but is a possibility, as he has the potential to be an excellent defender of the pg position.

So, either Bayless is the future at the point, or we need somebody else entirely.

Any player is going to have deficiencies in their game. Sergio's was defense and scoring. He's really improving both. I'm not ready to write him off yet. He's now hit 8 of 23 3-pointers. Not stellar, but also a bit above average. He reads the passing lanes well and his contant movement is at least pestering. Having Sergio on the court is just not as bad defensively IMO as some are making it out.

His constant movement on the offensive end is pretty valuable as it tires out the opposing point guard. It was fun watching Rose follow Sergio around. And we already know that his assist/turnovers is among tops in the league.

Sergio is young and only going to improve. He worked hard this summer and look what he's done! I'm all for upgrading, but only at the right price (cough Kirk Hinrich cough). Otherwise, I'd really like to see Blake remain the starter but get less minutes and Sergio's role increased.

By the way, it was awesome how Sergio kept trying to get the ball to Bayless in the last 7 minutes of the 4th quarter. After some disappointing drives and possessions by Bayless, Sergio went up to him, patted him on the butt to console him. Sergio was making sure that Bayless wasn't getting down on himself.

So add leadership to Sergio growing list of improvements too!
