The algorithm:

1. Just list the best player at each position for each decade.

2. Make one list of Lakers so that Southern Californians won't whine, and a separate list of non-Lakers to get any respect for your list from the rest of the country.

1. MJ
2. LeBron
3. Magic
4. Bird
5. Kareem
6. Hakeem
7. Wilt
8. Duncan
9. Russell
10. Shaq

He should have created top ten players by decades category. I would want that format and note these players: Dr.J, Connie Hawkins, Gail Goodrich, Jerry West, John Havelchick (sp), Bob Cousy, Pete Marevich and so on....

Wilt was better in every facet. Also consider how differently they called the game back then. They did not allow backing down. That's why you see Wilt doing all those fade aways

I think it's important to point out that this is not a list Shaq made, despite the title of this thread and some of the posts.

That's beneath me. I am a busy man. It never occurred to me to click on the article. It's the job of you peons to do that, then I figure it out from the context of your posts.

Hmm, My list has been Kareem, MJ and Lebron. I can definitely see from a stats POV putting Wilt #1, its hard for me to judge the older guys though. Who’s your top 3, Wilt, MJ, Lebron (no particular order).
I'd probably have Wilt, MJ, Russell (I go back and forth between Wilt and MJ).

I get the argument for LeBron over Russell, I've just never liked him as a leader or teammate.

LeBron is the most physically gifted player on that list though, for sure.

I think Kareem was the most unstoppable player I saw (I was born in the mid 80’s so Wilt and Bill Russell I just havent seen as much of). Lebron was / is the best overall Athlete Ive ever seen. Jordan was just a elite mix of everything, desire, skill, athleticism, and honestly IMO changed the NBA more than any other player.

Abdul-Jabbar was a monster in his prime, and he had an absurd number of high-quality years. If someone wanted to argue KAJ was the greatest player in NBA history, I'd be okay with that. Jordan, James, Chamberlain, Abdul-Jabbar are all reasonable picks for best ever, IMO.
