when the inevitable deadly viral outbreak is finally knocking on the door of our privileged society, only then will we see the true and utter depravity of not being able to air fry kale chips. lifes essential conveniences will slowly fall away. oh, you used to wear underwear? i am currently eating dog food out of a human skull.

when we are all peeling scabs off of the inside of our eyelids, everyone will finally see what im talking about.

I couldn’t help but hear Ron Swanson’s voice as I read this.

My goal with this thread is to put ALL POLITICAL debates aside, and help each other.

Let's work together and share tips on how to survive and prepare incase this virus gets out of control. I place my families health and safety above all else. So please post all political opinions in other threads.

First, our country is doing a very good job of controlling the spread of the virus within our borders. What concerns me is. Many, if not most other countries do not have the same resources we have. There is a real possibility this virus will get out of control in some areas beyond China. Which raises the possibility it "may" spread here, despite the best efforts to stop it. If that happens, we all may need to hunker down and live off of the supplies on hand. Possibly for months.

There are a ton of topics we can share info and ideas with each other. I will start with ideas on how to prepare food supplies.

Food alone is a huge topic. But since vegetables is a hot topic, I will start there.

Many vegetables can be frozen, such as celery, carrots and lettuce. They may not have the same texture when thawed, but are healthy eats in soups and stews. Most veggies will last 3 months frozen, some longer if blanched before freezing.

Another option is to grow sprouts inside the house, even in winter. Sprouts can be grown in about a week, and are extremely healthy and full of nutrients.

A few sprouts such as broccoli and kale can be grown in mason jars with only water, not soil.

A couple of good sources for buying bulk microgreen sprouting seeds.
Rainbow sprouting seed co.
True-leaf market co.

These companies have instruction on their websites on how to grow the sprouts. We have grown several batches as a test. They taste ok, but make very healthy fresh salads. Remember, we are talking about surviving a long time hunker down situation.

What tips do you have to share?
Everywhere you go, WATCH YOUR FUCKING ASS LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT.

Honestly, if you're going to look at a long-term situation just from a feed-the-family point of view (no politics/guns/social downfall situation), then an aquaponic system would probably be a good one. You'll have fish and can get nutrient-rich veggies, like tomatoes and peppers.
I get wheat from the LDS prep folks, and with just yeast, salt/water and ground wheat you can have bread for a while.
This reminds me to refresh myself on Robinson Crusoe.

Well, thats all folks. You're all going to die.

Except for BrianFromWa.
My guess is his real secret plan is to sit on the bottom of the ocean in a nuclear sub untill it is safe to come out.

Time to hunker down in my cave and hope for the best. Getting darn crowded in here. A bunch of bats and snakes moved in. They are afraid they will catch the virus from humans.

See you all in hell soon.
If he's going to sit in the sub then he'd better plan on sitting in it in Australia. I hear they'll be the last to perish.

I don't see how going from 50 to 52 would really add 12 years to my life.

Chuckle, you are obviously new to the new math. You'll learn.

I quit drinking sometime in 2018. It took me way too many years to figure out that it just doesn't agree with me.

It's a good thing that Puffins legal here in Portland... as well as Iceland. :jumprope:
I cut way way down on my drinking about 20 years ago. I figure that my bottle of scotch is going to last another five years. However, my collection of 375 fine wines is going to last just one more year. I will frequently pop open a bottle of fine wine to drink with my friends while sitting and sometimes reclining on the various sidewalks of downtown Portland. Wave when you see me.

Freezing soup and casseroles in case I end up in quarantine. Fresh vegetables in garden. Well stocked on cat food. Plenty of books and knitting yarn. Doing daily workouts.

Word FAMS; same here. I have had some slips but in the last year my eyes were opened and I know it’s for the best not to.

I wish it would warm up enough for gardening here, but we've got another month to go.

Dear God, please don't eat cat food. I'll drop off something you can eat right at your front door. I'll even make it tasty if you'll promise me that you won't eat any cat food. Come on, where's your will to live.

It was a joke, which apparently wasn't clear.
I was saying that I currently have sex 50 times a week (the supermodels are VERY demanding).
Adding 2 times per week to that makes 52, but probably wouldn't add 12 years to my lifespan, since it is only a 4% increase.

My joke didn't depend on your joke being a joke or not, hence my joke appears to have failed. Hope your happy that you have destroyed my day. Now, I'm going to run off and cry in a great big glass of beer. Thanks a lot for turning my grin to a frown. What do you do in your spare time, pull the wings off flies?

I used to have a cat (Hobbes) who would only eat dog food...but not just any dog food. Not sure if they still make it but it was made by "Mighty Dog" and came in a tuna can size...Hobbes' preference was "Turkey and Bacon"...I remember when I'd open the can I could easily smell it...I swear that stuff smelled good enough to put on crackers...smelled just like well, real turkey and bacon.

Your dick would fall off and you'd have to get a wooden peg

No no no, the cat food is for Lucia. I would never eat her food, it's for her. I'd feed myself to her before I'd let her go hungry.

You can plant cool weather crops now in Portland if that's where you are.

Yeah, I know. Unfortunately, the soil is pretty darned wet in the garden right now. I'll probably wait a couple more weeks and then plant.

Do you know how hard it is to till wet soil? It's actually back breaking.
