Sheldon and Danforth say 72-73% chance Dwight Howard signs here

Not a fan of Dwight but he would drastically improve our defense. We gave up so many easy baskets having Dwight would at least give us a deterrent for teams who drive into the lane. Hate him but I don't I have to like every player on the team as long as they make our team better and foolish to say he wouldn't help. Btw saying Dame can't learn to throw a lob is silly, it will drastically improve Dame and CJ's ability to drive because the other center won't be able to leave them to help

For all the people who would be against bringing in Love to go with Howard -

Love averaged 16 and 10 last season in 31 minutes per game. His Per 36 was 18 and 11 as the third option on a championship team. Bosh was putting up roughly those same numbers, with worse rebounding, on the LeBron Miami teams.

Leonard isn't a power forward.

It is known.

I agree, I am just saying he is just as effective as Love IF all we did was have him camp out at the 3 pt line. Neither can guard a stretch 4 so we might as well keep Leonard for that role. Not saying Leonard and Love are equal....but in that one role they are close enough.

Plumlee put up 13/11 per 36 last season. Why not play him at PF?

For real. I get he has some warts, but he would be a great defensive force down low for us. You dont turn down signing a player of dwights caliber, who gives us something we are sorely lacking.
You do if the cost outweighs the benefit. His caliber is getting smaller and smaller as the years go by.

Because he can't shoot.... at all.... so you'd have two frontcourt guys that can't shoot and can't make free throws. That's terrifying honestly.

Seriously though, what about Monroe and Dwight?

I feel like I keep going back to this, but if Monroe can't work next to Drummond, why would he work next to Dwight?

Howard would be the biggest free agent signing in franchise history.
Tallest, maybe.
Most expensive? Probably.
Most influential? Hardly.
Most quickly and thoroughly regretted? Kenny Anderson sets a high bar, but Howard would clear it with ease.

I'm probably one of the people that would like to see Dwight here, I seriously think he's ready to be serious, and I think Dame is the type of leader that he's always needed to play with.

Some will say Kobe is a leader too, but he isn't the type of leader that Dwight needs to be around. We all know that Dwight seems a little sensitive, and there's absolutely no problem with that, everyone has different emotional patterns/strengths/weaknesses. I feel like Dame would be able hold Dwight accountable without being a complete ass about it. So what if he needs a little coddling, that's why it's a team. Just like in any profession where you work with others, you gotta be able to hold each other accountable while also lifting each other up. That's why this team is special, I truly believe that Dwight would "buy in".

It's not just the coaching staff, it's the fans. Howard hasn't been fan loved since he left Orlando. He would love it here, it would motivate him.
Not if I was sitting courtside, he wouldn't, lol...

So many things to ponder if Dwight was to come to Portland:

  • What do you do with a guy who was sandbagging for part of his time in HOU even if Harden was freezing him out?
  • How do you play him at the end of games when he is such a poor FT shooter?
  • How does Stotts incorporate him into the Blazers offense when he would be the #3 option at best and isn't a very good passer?
  • How much will Dame and CJ's defense improve just by having a defensive presence behind them?
  • How much $$$ will he cost? $30M just seems like way too much for a #3 option on offense passed the prime of his defensive abilities.
  • If he comes here, who is gone ... Meyers or Plumlee?

Plumlee is gone if howard signs. We would need to keep leonard for his shooting. And if dwight was willing to buy in, which is a big if, you can have meyers play center at the end of games for his FT shooting.

I agree with that ... just curious what people thought. If that were the case, what do you think NeO could get for Plumlee?

Wouldn't Meyers have to be renounced to be able to even offer 25 million per year?
Yes. Meyers is most likely gone rather then Plumlee. But they could both be in this scenario. Which doesn't make much sense because then you would need another big.

P.S. If you don't renounce Meyers you would have to Harkless. So I guess that gives you one other option.

Not sure where people thinking Plumlee is more likely to go than Meyers even if Howard comes.... Plums makes peanuts. Great contract.

No. You can renounce henderson, kaman, roberts, waive montero and alexander, and trade plumlee for a future 1st. Then you end up with about 27 million a year to offer him.

Plumlee is going to cost 15 million a year after next year at least. Probably more. He has 1 cheap year left.

And you can get to about 27 million while keeping crabbe, leonard and harkless.

Right now it doesn't matter what Plumlee costs next year though. We will be over the cap then.

I can't see any reason that Leonard has deserved to be here over Plumlee.

Waiving Montero? The deal is off!

Plumlee, davis and howard sounds like too similar of a rotation. Leonard gives you something different and a big you can keep in at the end of games for ft shooting purposes.

If howard is ok with 27 million, then you keep leonard not plums imo. Youd get an asset for plums too.

FYI the Harden freeze out effect is real. Just look at the cliff Terrance Jone's numbers dropped off in the frontcourt as well.

Dwight hasn't been an all-star for two years. He hasn't scored 1300 points in a season in FIVE YEARS. In order to be worthwhile, he needs to get back to shooting ~60% FT, but he hasn't hit even 55% since 2010-2011. If he's just sandbagging, he's been sandbagging for 1/3 of his career.

I'm not real excited about the prospect because:

1) He'd only sign for a large contract since--
2) he's a bit of a diva with a large ego. And he wouldn't be worth it because--
3) his game was built on athleticism which has been severely reduced due to injuries, and--
4) at this point he's past his prime anyway.
5) He wants to be the focal point of the offense which we don't really need at center and--
6) I remember reading he wanted more post up opportunities in Houston, but our offense seems much better when there's movement and spacing and--
7) he's not a very good passer.
8) If we're planning on keeping Meyers, who's not a PF, then we'd need a PF who plays down low, not a center like Howard. I think Love would be a great fit next to Howard actually, but I don't see that as a very likely scenario.
9) Those complaining about Plumlee being a detriment at the end of games because he's not a great finisher around the rim will discover that Howard will give you a lot of the same problems due to his FT shooting. You can't really go to him at the end of games and having him in there for defense might be an issue if the opponent decides to hack him every time we get the ball.
10) And he's never looked like he's got the intangibles of a "winner" but gets paid like he does. It's fun to imagine Damian's leadership putting all that to rest, but at some point you have to just admit that Howard is who he is & he's unlikely to change regardless of yet another change in scenery. I remember his almost depressed reaction when Harden hit that shot in the playoffs this year.

At face value I just don't see it as a good fit in the locker room, contractually or on the court. But other than that...

In order
You tell him, and reassure him that he is important
Fun fact, Dwight shot 67% from the line as a rookie. He's not that bad. He's just never had a coach or organization believe in his offensive abilities to improve
He's actually a pretty decent passer out of the post.
Tremendously
Going rate. We can only hope it's the injured guy
