Sheldon and Danforth say 72-73% chance Dwight Howard signs here

It all comes down to the price for me.

Howard made $23.3M last year. He's gonna want a raise, along with some security of multiple years. He's eligible to make a max of around $30.8M/yr.

If we renounce the rights to Henderson, Kaman and Roberts, we would have $24.8M free. Guys like Durant and Horford (7-9 yr vets) will be making about $26.4M. If we're going to get to that level, we need to renounce the rights to Leonard ($7.7M CAP hold), Harkless ($7.2M CAP hold), or Crabbe ($2.7M). Another option is a trade that dumps salary. For example, trade Vonleh ($2.8M) for a second round draft choice. Or trade Plumlee ($2.3M) for a late first and/or second round draft choice.

I'm okay signing him up to the tier 2 max of $26.4M, but if we go higher than that, I think we're losing too much CAP flexibility and depth on our team for short term gains.

Will a team (like NY) be crazy enough to offer him the full max of $30.8M? If so, I say good luck to them.

Not to poopoo your idea, but didn't someone post a few weeks ago talking about the minimum cap holds. & that by weaving alexandor or montero you free up zero capspace.
Correct. Montero and Alexander only make around $800K. Teams are required to have a minimum roster of 12. If you go below that, there's a $500K hold. So essentially you're only gaining about $300K by waiving those guys.

Which might make a difference in getting howard or not.

24.8 free from renouncing kaman, hendo and roberts. Add 600k. So 25.4. Then trade plumlee for a future 1st. Gets us to about 27.2.

Thats about right imo.

Maybe we keep montero and he gets an offer of 26.9 from us with 4.5% raises.

That would be around 4 years 115 millionish.

Some numbers from Howard last year:
Minutes per game: 32.1
Point per game: 13.7
FG%: 62.0%
Rebounds per game: 11.8
Reb %: 20.2 (13th in the league last year)
Blocks per game: 1.6
Block %: 4.1 (46th in the league last year)
FT%: 48.9% (ugh!)
PER: 18.9

Although he is clearly on the down-hill side of his career, it looks to me like he has enough in the tank for 2-3 more productive years.

The 'drawback' of trading for a 1st round pick is that they also come with a cap hold. The picks in the 15-30 range are around $1.0M to 1.5M CAP hold.

Every nickle counts I guess. I wouldn't hesitate to waive Alexander or Montero if that's what it took to get Howard. We could easily pick up a few undrafted guys on minimum salaries again.

Yeah I bet NY gets him. I won't be crushed to see that happen.

Yeah with the Rose trade, I can definitely see that going down............ Rose, Carmelo, Howard, Porzingis......now they need a starting SG.....and some depth.

Unless they go for Durant instead.

I remember watching Dwight on TNT. He handled a tough interview pretty well.
I agree, what I was most impressed with was his talking about working on his body and game hard this offseason to become the dominant guy he can be. I thought of him as a coach killer, but I think now he just wants to be liked and part of something positive for a change. I just want him to take a pay cut to sign here

Im talking about a future 1st round pick. No cap hold for future 1sts.

Erm . . . I guess?

Everybody says that shit about the off-season. I'm just saying I thought he handled some uncomfortable questions in a thoughtful, straight-foward manner. I have no idea if he's going to ever be able to get his body right again, and I still think he might end up being a chemistry nightmare for whatever team signs him, and I he's probably still the prima donna he's always been. but he did give a good interview at least.

I think we found the team that will jack up the price on Crabbe...

So let me get this straight .... Howard is frustrated from playing with Kobe and Harden and wants to be loved, and he is going to go play with Melo and the NEW YORK Knicks???? I said it before, if this is the kind of decision that he makes then he wasnt the right fit for us anyway.

I am sure the Zin Master will sell it as Rose will be running the offense........ not Melo, so DH would get the ball down low.
But I agree with you.

Will they have cap space if they sign Howard? Or Durant?

Well, 44 million between Melo and Rose and they have basically all expiring deals now except Porzingis and O'Quinn who is making like 4m a year... I think they will have enough to offer over 10m for Crabbe.

Here's how every play will go in New York if this all goes down:

"(Insert team) scores, Howard inbounds to Rose, who brings it up the court slowly, initiates the offense with 17 on the shot clock, passes to Melo on the left block, Melo posts, backs off, Howard sets screen, Howard rolls, Melo stops and pops, draws iron, and yells "just get the rebound" to Howard."

So 44 million plus Dwight is at least 70 +7 for Porzingis and O'Quin. That leaves roughly 17 mil for 10 players. I am not sure if they want to use the rest on Crabbe.

Actually it will be "Knick backup point guard brings the ball up the court because Rose is out with another injury, passes to Melo on the left block, Melo posts, backs off, Howard sets screen, Howard rolls, Melo stops and pops, draws iron, and yells "just get the rebound" to Howard as Howard sulks."

and KP wonders why he never gets to touch the ball....

If that's true then it means he's looking to sign probably his last contract with the Mavs. I believe a player can opt out and re-sign with the same team.
Thats what Im thinking. Opting out to sign for much less to help Dallas bring in more talent to go all in next year.

except Parsons opted out too...

Some funky stuff in the water down there I think.

Parsons is probably looking for a better contract (Don't know why he'd get one after the injuries), or a change of scenery. Dirk is going to stay with the Mavs, he's said as much. "The only reason I would leave is if we are starting 5 rookies", which is basically a cool way of saying that it's never going to happen.

Until free agency actually starts I'm sure we're going to be inundated with all sorts of rumors about this player or that player going to XYZ team (sort of like this Dwight to PDX rumor). It makes for fun discussion, but I wouldn't put any stock in anything that gets printed in the next couple of days unless you hear about offer sheets actually being signed.

wait. These are all rumors? Nothing official? I'm ignorant about the rules. I thought teams can trade the moment the finals are over, but FA doesnt start until july 1st? Can someone clue me in on this? I promise to like your post. :)

You can almost feel people spinning up over this stuff. That's all I was saying.

After the trade deadline, teams can trade again once they are eliminated from the playoffs or the playoffs end. They can't trade players who are on ending contracts or who have early termination options. Once July hits, the new salary cap goes into effect and free agent signings and trades can happen again starting July 7, when the moratorium ends.
