If we pick up his option he won't be an expiring contract this season.

Theres actually plenty of money for matching salary. Between Wright, TRob, Meyers, Freeland, Clavier, CJ we can easily receive a max contract back in a trade.

We will see how this summer works out. IMO he will either be traded or improve enough where we don't want to trade him.

If I read the CBA FAQ right, the team has team options in years 3 and 4 of rookie contracts. So they don't have to extend a second time after this season. Thus expiring.

Someone mentioned rare for a player to emerge after 2 years, actually its not rare at all in fact its completely normal development to take a couple years to get it. And if you are talking about centers who were 20 or under its not uncommon to take up to 4 years before they get it. Look at our own starting center and a past one named Joel Przybilla and another past one named Jermaine.

Its too easy for fan to be impatient. The Blazers aren't in a capspace situation this summer they have another season to develop him and he could be ass end of the bench and not hurt a damn thing. If he doesn't progress, big deal Paul can afford it. If he does develop at least it's for us and not Detroit or someone else.

Year 3 and 4 are seperate independent options. The rookie scale team option contracts are also unique in that the option must be picked up 8 months ahead of time. Normally team options can be picked up after the season but not so with rookie contracts.

I think the key component is the qualifying offer would have a hold on the Blazer's cap of something like 3 times his rookie scale until they extend the option or let him walk. That would tie their hands before July 1st, so they wouldn't have that space during draft night.

And that wont affect us this summer or next summer, only the summer 2016 which if everything goes as planned we wont have caproom to affect anyway.

Yes it's no big deal either way. I'm just done with this hack. The sooner he's off the Blazer the better, IMO.

So basically if we get Hawes, we should expect Meyers to be part of a package for a S&T back. I think it'd be a win for Meyers, he'll get more PT.

Yes, and they should throw in a bonus.

4-5 years from now and he'll be a top ten player in this league.

I'll admit, I was dubious that this beiber looking kid was going to stick, but , I've been VERY pleasantly surprised with the growth in Meyers game the last ten games or so.
He's got fantastic touch on his shot - and that makes him dangerous - but the most pleasing development is he's now starting to fight for the ball.
Once (if) he get's a full taste for contact and fighting for the ball, to go with his obvious offensive prowess, then he's going to be a full load for any opposing team.
Great to see he's improved a lot in interviews too - seems he's matured, not only in BBIQ, but all round.

I have been pleased with Beiber's play. I will say though that I'd like to see him work on his post game more tbh. He certainly needs a big man camp or two with Hakeem.

The few times he's actually tried something in the post, he's looked pretty good. I think the biggest thing he needs to work on is just being more physical. I'm not going to doubt him though. I don't even know what his ceiling is anymore.

Agreed. He's thrown a few hooks that look pretty decent. He definitely needs more practice, but the little that we've seen makes me think that he can get there.
I've done a complete 180 on him - I think he might now be in my Top 5 favorite* current Blazers!

*Note that "favorite" is not the same as "best".

Yeah it's crazy. Last year I despised watching him. This year I can't wait until he's in there. I was actually MAD last night when stotts subbed him out for Kaman late, and I like Kaman!

Leonard is gon turn into a rich mans kevin love ;)

He's gonna regress.

#GottakeepupthenegativesonthebeibsFAMS,

Okay, that's a lie. He's doing much better.

I am pleasantly surprised with Leonard's performances as of late. He's been so much better with boxing out, staying with his man and making wise decisions on the offensive end. I'm glad we extended him.

Did we extend him? I thought we just picked up the OPTION to extend him. I guess it's just semantics, since we will almost certainly extend him - I just didn't think it had happened yet.

You're right! We picked up his option, which actually guarantees that we can either extend him or keep him a restricted free-agent.

At 22 Meyers is ahead of the curve. He's a keeper. After preseason I crowned him the most improved returning bench player and man did I take flak for that opinion. Guess what...he's the most improved returning bench player! Go Meyers! Last season I didn't know if he'd develop but he has. Kim Hughes deserves some credit and in the past I blamed Hughes for his development. I was wrong.

After seeing Freeland's improvement last season, I was confident Meyers would improve, too (I mean, come on he is 5 years younger with a lot less experience). I was one of the few here that actually noticed improvement last year. Most people we just looking at looking at his scoring and PER and overlooked his improved rebounding and better defensive positioning. So many people we overly harsh (I mean OVER THE TOP harsh) on the guy last season. He was only 21 and you could tell he'd lost confidence in his shot, but still had good form and offensive fundamentals. That makes it especially gratifying to see him start to put it all together this year. He has his confidence in his shot back - and NEVER forces bad shots, and has continued to improve his rebounding and defense. Props to the young man for continuing to work hard and not getting down on himself, and props to Kim Hughes for the great work he's done with all our big men.

BNM

2-3 years from now Meyers Leonard will be another version of Reaf LeFrentz. So I'm actually saying yes.

You guys forget that Raef was a terrific shot blocker. I don't think Meyers will ever get those instincts. I do like his play as of late though.

When Stotts first coached Meyers he said he had the potential to be like a Sonics era Shawn Kemp and Freeland a Nick Collison.

I haven't looked back through this thread but I am pretty sure I was one (of many) who said to not extend him. Very glad POR had their own ideas.

Anyone else want to fess up?
