The New Orleans Hornets signed forward Patrick Ewing Jr. of the Sioux Falls Skyforce for the 18th GATORADE Call-Up of the 2010-11 NBA Development League season. Ewing Jr.'s call-up increases the number of current NBA players with NBA D-League experience, including players currently on assignment to their NBA D-League affiliates, to 89.
Ewing Jr. (6-8, 235) has started 48 of 49 games with Sioux Falls and the Reno Bighorns this season, averaging 17.7 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists. An NBA D-League All-Star, Ewing Jr. joined the Skyforce from Reno via trade on Jan. 25, and is averaging 22.6 points, 11.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists in his last five games. With 22 double-doubles on the season, Ewing Jr. ranks among the league leaders in scoring (ninth) and rebounding (third).
Selected by the Sacramento Kings in the second round (43rd overall) of the 2008 NBA Draft, Ewing Jr., the son of the Hall-of-Fame center and current Orlando Magic assistant coach Patrick Ewing, has spent two preseasons with the New York Knicks (2008, 2010) and has played in the NBA Summer League with the Knicks and the Magic. He also played 30 games with Reno in 2008-09, averaging 16.8 points and 8.9 rebounds. Ewing Jr. spent his first two collegiate seasons at Indiana before transferring to Georgetown. As a senior with the Hoyas in 2008-09, Ewing Jr. averaged 6.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists, and was named the Big East Sixth Man of the Year.
Ewing Jr. is expected to join the Hornets today, and should be available when they play the Lakers in Los Angeles on Sunday at 9:30 p.m. ET.
