(Slightly OT): If Oden signs for minimum w/Heat...

Either Oden's injuries are legit, and his career is toast.....or he hates Portland so much much he will never be "healthy" until he gets away from here.

Either way, I don't expect to ever see him play for the Blazers.

That sums it up, the only possible options.

I'm going to go on record to say that he'll be the next Portland Trail Blazer in the All-Star game.

Or, Oden's injuries were legit ,but the injuries don't persist. And he ends up being a important part of the Blazers.

I wonder what the tipping point is for what the Blazers would match. I suppose any amount with only 2 years would be matched, but the question is what if the length is longer. Suppose Oden is offered 5 year 50mil. Would the Blazers match that?

It's not dumb. #1 picks require ~$7M just for the QO. At what point do you say you've spent enough and aren't likely to get value for the money spent?

Sunk cost. It doesn't matter how much we've spent in the past. You look at value going forward and what it is worth.

Oden signs Q.O., plays for $8.8m in Portland.

Oden signs MLE with Heatles in summer of 2012.

That's not very far-fetched for 2012. For 2011, it's impossible, though.
True, but don't you think it is more likely that if he takes the Q.O. he tries for a sign and trade (assuming it still exists?). I think it is a no brainer to sign Oden to a Q.O. If he takes it at least you have a potentially tradeable piece if the S&T still exists. If he signs the MLE a year later for the Heat, that's his right too, but I am thinking karma is gonna get him. The most likely outcome in my opinion is that he doesn't take the Q.O. and tries to negotiate the best possible contract he can. If he wants out, he can always demand a trade. Then the franchise can trade him and save face. Also, if he starts having some success, he will see what it is like to be revered by one of the best fan bases in sports. I don't think there is anyway Oden should think 1 and done.

Oden would be a fool to leave money on the table.
Portland would be foolish to not offer a nice 4/40 type deal and wrap him up for the future. His injuries have all been un-related and separate. He will be healthy again.
Our only problem is if GO doesn't play in the next year for us, and becomes a UFA. I doubt it happens though.

In what way would you say Oden's injuries have been unrelated? I'll give you the broken wrist in college and the sprained foot in his second year, but aside from that he's had 4 major knee issues, only one of which could be called contact related.

I'm no doctor, but I'd say that it's likely that he had some sort of genetic weakness of the articular cartilage in his knees. He's a big guy, but there are lots of big guys in the NBA who are able to play without having their cartilage give out from what seems to be non-contact incidents. It's possible that the broken patella was somehow related to the chip that he had in the same knee the previous year, although the doctors have said that they don't think it was. It's pretty hard to make a case that the patella issues are related in any way to the cartilage issues.

The patella break is fully healed by now, so I don't see any reason to think that it's going to be a problem for him going forward. The MF surgery in his knees may shorten his career, but it seems likely that he'll be able to play at a high level for some period of time. There's no damage to any of his tendons or ligaments, so the knees should be stable. Undoubtedly, the emphasis in his training will be on building up the muscle mass to absorb some of the punishment his knees are going to take. He's also said to be working to get his weight down to ease the forces on his knees. If he does all of that, I don't see any reason that he shouldn't be able to have a reasonable length of career.

I don't know.... Greg is one person in the media and from what I've heard a complete jerk when the cameras are off! I could totally see him pulling a Labron James and ending up with Miami. He'd be given a ring in his first year and he'd get a ton of media exposure + he's young and south beach is very enticing!

Don't be shocked if he bolts.... He's already got millions, what's really keeping him here? The weather? HAHA!

I haven't heard anything about him being a jerk off camera (or in person) cept from those who A: want him gone B: have an agenda or C: seem to forget they're humans and might want to be alone sometimes.

I would love to find out where you heard that. Greg is as down to earth and nice as anybody I've ever met....... let alone an NBA player! Cool and very chill!

if Greg signs for the minimum, he's a bigger idiot then Qyntel Woods. Take the money now, try for a title later. 15-25 million in the bank is a LOT of sav.

The thread title is laughable.

Oden is the last person in the world who should think, "Now that I've arrived, now that I've achieved all I want in basketball, now that I have all the money I'll ever want, there's only one thing left to top off my superlative career so my grandchildren will have nothing to question about my life...I'LL PLAY FOR THE MINIMUM AND GET ME A RING."

Do the voices in his head count as an inside source?

That's not very far-fetched for 2012. .

It's incredibly far-fetched. The only way the Heat would be interested in him in 2012 is if he (at least mostly) plays through the 2011-12 season. No team is going to be interested in a guy who's missed essentially three straight seasons and four of his first five.

And if he does play through the next season, he's going to be extremely desirable to teams. There's no way, at age 24, he's going to sign an MLE deal just to be a role-player on a presumptive title-caliber team with three stars. That's what someone who's either old and wants to win one before they retire or someone with no other options does. The Blazers will likely offer him a large deal if he has a healthy, strong season and I doubt they'd be the only team.

There is a way, though. That's if he does it. I don't think it's at all likely, but considering this thread was for some reason about the veterans' minimum, my hypothetical scenario makes more sense than Oden signing for the minimum to play in Miami, which I do think is 'far-fetched', or even 'never going to happen'.

I wasn't saying there was no way for it to be possible in a universe of near-infinite possibilities. I was saying that there is no way, IMO, that he does it. :)

I took "it's not that far-fetched" as you saying it was within the reasonable range of likelihoods. But since in this post you say you don't think it's at all likely, I guess that's not what you meant. So we (largely) agree.

1st... I don't want Greg Oden gone, I think he owes Ptown some great basketball, I know I'm not alone there!!!
2nd.. Greg has gotten quite a reputation in Ptown and the club scene, ask around. It's not hard to find out. There's only a handful of hot spots in this town and Greg has gotten drunk and been quoted saying "CLASSY" things in most of them.
3rd... Portland has had bad Mojo with Greg... I think he knows this too.. he hears the national analysts saying he should start over elsewhere and begin a new! I haven't heard Greg say a word in six months like... I owe Portland some great basketball and can't wait to live up to my #1 pick. These fans are great and I want to stay a Blazer! Have you?
4th... Greg didn't even clap for his teamates in the playoffs.. was there and watched it... Does that seem like a guy who's bought into stickin around long term?

My hope is that Greg will give back to Portland all the heart the fans have shown him over his hobbled career. Do I think that will happen? Guess we'll know soon enough.

As for you..Yenniedn... It seems that the only reason you comment on my post is to attack me personally! Once again not one piece of basketball insight has been shown by you. Shocker! Get a hobby sport, you're starting to look like a stalker!

Hey Ape, your fantastic posts ARE my hobby. In fact, Sport, they are my life! And that's because they are always so very well thought out, always backed by irrefutable facts, well written and never the result of any irrational emotions!

Hmmm, the iPad doesn't do green text so I'm not sure if you could tell that I was fibbing up there. Take it as a compliment that your posts almost always force a reply out of me b/c you're own of those "fans" that seldomly ever posts but you can bet that when you do, it's going to be some irrational bitching and moaning based on halfcocked ramblings that typically end with excessive exclamation marks. When was the last time you posted something (anything at all) positive about this team that you're supposed to be a fan of?

In this fine example, you throw out some baseless claim about how Oden's the devil off-camera while you've got thehispanicthatcausespanic saying the opposite. Now should I take the word of a guy who actually sees Greg all season long and actually talks/ hangs out with him or just believe the Ape because he's got his ears to the ground and "heard" that Oden's a two faced TV character? Hate to borrow a line from the PapaG/MediocreMan routine but howsabout a link, eh?

If your claim ever gets proven to be true, I'll be the first to sincerely apologize to you publicly. But until then, it looks a lot like more senseless exclamation marks from you.

Could just be Oden can't handle his liquor or is an angry drunk?
I'd seriously pay to hear Oden say this: "Do you know who I AM? IM THE TRIPOD BITCH!"

Chris Broussard suck off LeBrick and get it over with! The whole comment makes no sense. Seriously how do you even post something so stupid and have a job with ESPN? Oden is not gonna sign a league minimum contract so he can gift wrap a ring to LeBrick. Good god this man is just dumb

He does hate Portland. He will play for the Bulls. Can't really blaim him. Needs a change and needs to stay healthy. Portland needs a nhl or mlb team badly.

Let's trade him for the White Sox!!

the A's are about to be homeless.

The article doesn't say that, though.
