I am really looking after this movie. I read the book some time ago and enjoyed quite a bit. I just kept thinking how it would be translated to the big screen.

It was pretty good, although I have not read the book yet so you may have a different take on it. I would imagine the book would have gone through more of the boys life and explained a couple things that were left unanswered. Some of the scenes about his childhood seemed rushed.

Now that I think about it, the last three movies I saw after reading the book were all pretty big disappointments (DaVinci Code, Kite Runner, 21). I think my opinion of the movie may drastically change once I read it.

Danny Boyle keeps getting better.

Most book to movie films are disappointments for people who've read the books, 'cause it leaves so much out in the film.

Definitely want to see this, will finally be able to in March (when I can catch up on a lot of movies) since I'll be done with school.

"Slumdog" emerges as Oscar favorite after SAG win

"Slumdog Millionaire," the rags to riches tale of a Mumbai slum dweller, emerged as favorite to win the best picture Oscar after winning the top prize at the 15th Screen Actors Guild awards on Sunday. "Slumdog," which involves a host of amateur young actors in Mumbai's slums, won for best ensemble cast on a night where Hollywood actors traditionally tend to honor their own.

I saw the first 30 minutes of it, looked really good. Gonna download it soon.

How didn't the Wrestler get nominated for best picture? I would've given it to that film.

Is ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ poverty porn?
“As the film revels in the violence, degradation and horror, it invites you, the Westerner, to enjoy it, too…Slumdog Millionaire is poverty porn,” wrote London Times’ columnist Alice Miles.

The phrase “poverty porn” spread across the Indian media as commentators nodded in agreement or shook their heads even before the film premiered in its native Mumbai and India could (legally) watch it.

A group of the city’s slum dwellers, including children, protested against the word “dog”. A social activist filed a defamation case in Patna. And this week, hundreds of slum dwellers in Bihar’s capital ransacked a movie theatre demanding the title be changed.

So, is it really “poverty porn” for the Westerner’s delectation? Are beatings, torture, and the maiming of street beggars a sick form of adult exotica?

Perhaps the question can be rephrased: does a morbid fascination with the suffering of others find a place in art and is “Slumdog” are a striking example of this?

Not buying this poverty porn thing.

Since when has portraying suffering on film become so taboo? The media of film is one of the most effective ways to make someone interact with and connect with the sufferers. Slumdog did that brilliantly.

Also, this class of people in India have so much more bullshit to deal with in their lives that they could be protesting against.

since im sick and miserable, i thought i would post this to cheer me up:

I just saw this, it was great. Rarely do I agree with the Oscar winning best film, but this deserved it.

I saw this recently too, and I was disappointed. I guess I must be one in a million... Anyone agree?

The second time I watched it, I kind of disliked the improbability/cheesiness of the plot. I feel like, if this was an Indian movie, most people would ridicule the cliches (especially towards the end). It definitely stood out for the acting and the technical aspects (the score, cinematography, etc.). I don't have a problem with it winning Best Picture, mainly because I feel like it was a strong year.

I haven't seen it either, I live in a cave.

So I watched it last night at home on DVD, in perfect quality....shhhhhhhh Id tell you but then Id have to kill you.

I barely watch any movies. Dark Knight was the only other new movie I saw this year.

Slumdog was good. Above average...but Academy Award??? Must have been a slow movie year :dunno:

I got this on my ipod from my friend's computer. Probably gonna watch it over the weekend.

Old thread, but just watched it. Great movie. It seemed almost unbelievable but why shouldn't it? Why make a movie about some boring regular stuff? This movie could have happened. I mean, yeah Latika just happened to grow up to be like the hottest Indian chick ever, so hot that even a scar looks good on her.

ANYHOOOOO...

Poverty porn? Fuck those poor bastards. You don't have to be rich to clean up your mess do you?

If you live in a slum like that, you need to find a way to get condoms or birth control. You have no business having a child and making them live in that hell. It is their own fault and I didn't enjoy seeing that part of the movie, it made me sick. CLEAN UP YOUR SHIT. You don't have to be educated to know that you are living in filth.
