Um? We sucked before and we suck now while Mavs were winning and now they are not.

Yeah I don't think you can say that any team has made out a 'winner' in the most technical definition of the word, but I think the Nets are really glad they made the trade, while there are some doubts on the Mavs side. Oh and we get two first rounders to boot!

The Nets are now at least a mess with a direction and a better financial situation than they were a few weeks ago. That's a start.

23-30 with kidd... 6-11 with harris. given the 2 extra picks and cap room and reducing the age of our PG by 10 ill take that slight reduction in our record.... it just seems a lot brighter now than it did at the beginning of last month. there IS light at the end of the tunnel afterall.

With Dirk going down for 2 weeks, I think the Nets did better. The Mavs gave away half their team to get Kidd, just so they could win it all this year. There is now a very real possiblity that the Mavs won't even make the playoffs this season. They screwed themselves when they gave away all their 6th men and other bench players. The ripple effect of Dirk injured is huge, and just in time to let the Nuggets get the 8th seed in the playoffs while they plummet in the standings.

Next year, the Nets are going to cash in on all that Dallas gave them.

Financially alone, the Nets are winners.

Now, basketball-wise, we'll just have to wait and see if there's a winner. I can't see any team being declared a winner/loser until the end of next season.

True, both teams are doing poorly now but New Jersey has more upside. In two years Dirk and Josh will be sliding downhill. Kidd will be retired and Dallas will be slipping into oblivion. Meanwhile the Nets (if they play their cards right) should enjoy beating up on some tough competition. Now is the time to pull out the weeds and plant some fresh seeds.

You seem to be functioning under the assumption the Nets ownership will spend money with their better financial situation, sure others are not so sure of that and would actually bet against it.

It's a weak assumption. The Nets with Kidd were in a situation where they were likely to spend <=0. They almost had to cut back. Now they can spend >=0. At the very worst, it means they don't have to cut any more.

I'm not sure I'd see the logic for them to spend every penny of savings they've made. I mean, as fans I guess you'd like em to, but you can only play so many guys. If you're the Nets going forward, you've basically got 9 roster spots sewn up. Before I'd spend money I'd want to know how it's gonna help me.
