Vince Young shot puts the ball. Cam Newton has an NFL arm. Terrible, terrible comparison. I'd compare Young to Tim Tebow, but not to Cam Newton. I think Newton is more like Mike Vick or Steve Young in physical tools. I might throw Randall Cunningham and Donovan McNabb in as well, or even Aaron Rodgers.

Young was a big WR/RB who happened to play QB. Newton, at least in these first two games, is doing things the Vince Young never did, or never could do.

I saw Newton ravage Alabama through the air, this guy has all the athletic gifts to get it done. If he stays healthy he'll be fine.

Like all scrambling quarterbacks he turns the ball over way too much to be an elite qb and take his team anywhere in the playoffs. Its cute and fun to watch, but doesnt lead to playoff success.

Dilfer threw for 12 TDs and 11 INTs in 8 starts with only 59% passing and a QB rating of 76.6 the year the Ravens won the Super Bowl.

For his career, Dilfer had a QB rating of 70, with 113 TDs and 129 INTs. Dilfer was a guy in a great situation, with one of the best defenses in NFL history (only gave up 16 TDs ALL YEAR!!!), and with a 2000-yard RB tandem in Jamal Lewis and Priest Holmes. Joey Harrington or Derek Anderson may have won a SB QBing that team.

Nope. Tony Banks started the year, and then Dilfer replaced him when Banks got hurt and went 7-1 down the stretch. What's amazing about that team is they gave up 10 ppg, yet still only went 12-4. Any offense at all for a five-to-seven year period and the Ravens could have been a dynasty, or at least been a peer of New England.

I really wanted this guy to be a bust (no I'm not an Oregon fan, I just hate his "entertainer and icon" bullshit comments) but after watching him against my Packers last week I'm convinced he's going to be great, he can drive the hell out of the ball, he's elusive, decisive and completely unafraid.

The guy has had a bad last two years but he is only 31 still fast and hard to cover hasn't looked washed up the last two games and I doubt he will look washed up this year. At this point he has been slightly below average, which is pretty good for a rookie QB, but certainly not great by any means

I think it was a better game than heaving to Stevie Smith (whether he's double-covered or not), tossing a few picks and racking up yardage in a loss. AND they won.

Did you watch any of the game? It was some of the hardest rain I've even seen in my life, and they had to play in it. Newton got his first 4th-quarter comeback win in only his 3rd NFL game, and he didn't turn the ball over while playing in a swamp.

Anyway, back to Newton, the weather certainly played a part in his struggles, but I think all his mediocre performance demonstrated is that rookie QBs are by their very nature inconsistent and he's not immune. Regardless (as much as it pains me to say it) I think he's going to end up one of the great ones if stays focused on football and being great and doesn't get sidetracked by all of the bullshit that comes with the pro-athlete lifestyle.

I don't think anyone saying he is "great" right now, which is why I find it odd that you repeatedly use current statistics when his future is unknown. I'm interested in what Peyton Manning's stats are for that, and then the same drill for Todd Marinovich, Andre Ware and Duante Culpepper (who I think is a better comparison than Roethlisberger, down to the inflated stats from throwing bombs to Randy Moss/Steve Smith).

Gut feel is that it's tough to project greatness after 3 games.
